Maxitours Taylor Made AM AM at Bramall Park.

The amazing British Summer of Sport continued at the superb Bramall Park today. The course is an immaculate green oasis, surrounded by million pound houses and has plenty of million pound members. The Club has a new energetic and highly respected professional Craig Daggitt. Many people feel he has really nurtured a nice, friendly atmosphere at this magnificent traditional links and I was made to feel very welcome indeed.

John Aikenhead enjoyed the stunning Bramall scenery when he teed off late in the day just ahead of a mixed club match. John is always incredibly observant and alert on the golf course ‘That’s a terrific course and I’ll tell you what, these are the best looking female members I’ve seen at any club-ever.’

Neville Dennis regularly enjoys slating his playing partners and commenting on their bad golf. Today he was at it even before they had teed off. ‘Frank Massey’s on our team. He were bloody hopeless on the last few holes again last week, I don’t know why I play with ‘im, we’ve started calling ‘im ‘front nine Frank!’

Ray Twist from Wigan is thinking of taking a degree in stating the obvious. When handing his card in after play I asked him if he enjoyed the course. ‘Yes, it’s a lovely course and like my course its got trees on either side of the fairway.’ He replied before heading to the bar.

In todays Taylor Made Am Am event the team of attractive Sale ladies led by the eye catching Hils Tarleton finished in 3rd place with 85 points. Cheshire scratch player Cath Rawthore recorded 3 birdies in her first six holes to give the team a great start. Talented student daughter Kate and crazy Julie Matthews were the other team members.

Second place went to the consistent Hindley Hall team of Geoff Cogswell, Ray Ward, Ray Twist and Shotsaver Order of Merit leader Gary Garner with an excellent 87 points.

Malcolm Wells from Didsbury knows how to pick a team. The six handicapper was joined by Alex ‘6 birdies’ Pritchard and Matt Robinson who have a combined handicap of plus 1. The fourth member of the team was 84 year old Bramall legend Pat Williams (14) and he became the oldest ever Maxitours winner as the team scored a wonderful 89 points.

Many thanks to Stuart Hubbard from Taylor Made for his sponsorship of todays event. Thanks to all players, I hope you really enjoyed your day.

The Shotsaver Open at terrific Vale Royal

‘Those are the best greens I have played on all year’ said golf mad Neville Dennis who plays on at least four different courses each week. Nearly every fourball commented on the green keepers superb presentation of this lovely Cheshire course.

Maxitours regular Dave Antrobus is a member at Vale Royal and today he was delighted to set a new club record when he consumed 3 large bowls of chips on completion of his round. Dave doesn’t even need to place an order as whenever he entered the clubhouse the barmaids wink at him and ask ‘the usual large bowl, Dave?’.

Warren Newton is known as the Prince Harry of Bramall Golf Club due to his boyish looks and the large number of tricky situations he finds himself in on the course. Today he stayed on the straight and narrow, teaming up with Alex Elliott he scored a terrific 44 points.

Andy Stubbens plays with an x-stiff tour shaft in his driver, he hits his regular shaft better but found he needed something with a little more torque as regular shafts are too easy to snap over his knee after a bad shot. The big hitting ex marine teamed up with Steve Rhodes to score an excellent 44 points and they took the early lead.

Bill Ross and Pete Tinkler, Mike Kulik and Jeff Chapman, Keith Massey and Martin Worthington also scored 44 points as the top of the star studded leader board started to look a little crowded.

Sean Mills and Tom Cartwright, two talented Vale Royal members, were drafted in off the practice putting green at the last minute due to a late cancellation. The 4 and 5 handicap players made the most of their local knowledge as they played tremendous golf to take first place with an impressive 47 points and a three shot victory, well played lads.

It was great to see Dave Madeley my old sponsor playing today. Dave is a really terrific bloke who I will always be in debt to as he was a massive help earlier in my career, but he can occasionally have a short fuse on the golf course. Dave’s Ping Zing putter has had the pleasure of being thrown at some of the best courses in the world.

Neil Ritchie won the straightest drive award on the 15th hole, he was close to tears as he watched his best drive of the day hit the marker post in the middle of the fairway and come hurtling back towards him.

Many thanks to Ian and his terrific team at Vale Royal for their help in making the day such a great success. A big thank you also to our sponsors Steven and Jason Ballard from Shotsaver for their superb continued support.

Thanks for playing today, I really hope you enjoyed your day.

Maxitours ‘pro-amtour.com’ Classic at Manchester Hopwood Golf Club.

A full field of 100 competitors really enjoyed Maxitours first ever visit to the impressive Hopwood Golf Club today. The course is perhaps the best in Manchester and has hosted many fine events. I played here in the European Tour School in 1992. Lee Westwood got some lucky bounces that week and he was delighted to narrowly pip me by 15 shots on his way to securing his Tour card.

Brian Connor is the highly respected Professional at Hopwood Golf Club and he runs a fantastic shop, he always has plenty of special bargains on his golf equipment and clothing. As usual David Kelly from Knutsford was more interested in the special offers in the kitchen and the profiteroles and cream at £2.50 was too good an offer for him to miss.

Todays sponsors were John and Alison Hooper who run terrific golf holidays to America (which I can very highly recommend www.americangolfholiday.com ). Despite being Southerners they are very nice people indeed. The language barrier proved something of a problem however as they attempted to interact with the more Northerly based members of the tour.
‘Ray Ward from Blackburn is going to speak to us after he’s had ‘summer teat’- what the hell is he talking about?’ They asked me looking confused. ‘He will speak to you after he has had something to eat’ I interpreted with a smile on my face.

In todays competition there was some ‘serious trunk slammin’ in the car park from Dave Wilson, Pete McManus and ex United players Stuart Pearson and Jeff Wealands. After an amazing front nine played in twelve better they hit the panic button and could not improve on the back nine and had to settle for 5th position.

Maxitours favourite Colin Roberts plays nearly every week, his last success came in 2009, today he was majestic in the wind and playing alongside Ian Tinling, Tony Adams and Jeff Andrews they set the clubhouse lead with a terrific 87 points which would be good enough for 2nd place.

Late in the day Gavin Sutcliffe played alongside his less talented father together with Paul Wrigley and Ian Fairbrother. The single figure team enjoyed the testing conditions and a birdie from 4 handicap Fairbrother on the last secured victory by a solitary shot, well played chaps.

Many thanks to all players for your support today, many thanks to Sponsors Alison and John Hooper and thanks to Hopwood for their wonderful hospitality, it looks set to become a regular and superb Maxitours venue.

The flag was perched on the front of the 13th green and I thought it would take a really talented golfer of great skill to get the ball close and win nearest the pin. Neville Dennis proved this was not to be the case as he drilled a thin four iron into the bank, the ball then popped up, struck the flag at great speed and left a 9 inch tap in for a birdie.

Carden Park 2012.

74 People enjoyed fantastic Carden Park this weekend. Superb weather, golf courses, hotel and company made the trip a real success.

Day 1 saw Bob and Jeff Francis take the lead with 45 points. The previous week playing at their home course they lost a vital club knockout match, Jeff broke his driver over his knee and Bob lost his putter after hurling it in the lake beside Shrigley Halls 18th green. After trawling the internet for an inflatable putter and unsnappable driver the two likeable characters returned to form in style today. Late in the day Jenny Kehoe and Moira Forster proved popular winners after a tremendous back nine saw them win the card play off.

The Olympics over the past two weeks has been a real success and the country has really enjoyed watching many unusual sports we wouldn’t normally take an interest in. I don’t know what Olympic sport Colin Walton was playing today but it certainly didn’t look like golf to me.

Congratulations to Niall Lynch who recorded a superb hole in one on the 3rd hole, he generously provided each table with a bottle of wine to enjoy with teir meal.

Day 2 saw some bleary eyed golf and the Shrigley Hall team of Brian Hopkins, Alan Pengelly, Niall Lynch and Darren Whittaker fought off their hangovers to record a solid 83 points to win the Am Am.

Many thanks to everyone for your tremendous support. Tim.
