Maxitours at brilliant Bromborough

Maxitours paid its first ever visit to Bromborough in todays’ event.
Even without Clubhouse facilities and some mixed weather everyone had a terrific day. It was a huge success.

The Club hosted the Cheshire championships in 2017 and it has quality oozing out of every hole.

I lost count of the number of players who said they hadn’t played the course before but would be reporting back to their golfing friends on what a superb venue Bromborough is.

‘That is a fantastic golf course’ Declared Simon Hemsley.

‘We have to come back next year!’ Begged Lewis Marland.

Wealthy Andy Veitch must get a mention this week for the worst golfing outfit of the year (if not the millennium). Tatty brown trousers and an even tattier brown shirt were offset by a red sweater with navy blue stripes. When I commented about his attire he told me a lovely story about when he was playing a University match and a really scruffy opponent turned up. Andy thought it would be a walkover but the lad turned out to be an international.

Fascinating tale Andy. Buy yourself a new sweater.

Lewis Marland and Phil Dickens travelled to the Wirral together but sensibly they socially distanced with Phil being chauffeured around like a US tour pro in the back seat. Unfortunately, Phil played so badly he travelled home in the boot.

In todays event there were an incredible five teams sharing second place on eighty points.
Third place went to Steve Woods (17)Ashton in Makerfield team of Jason Atherton(10) Tim Potter(9) and Jeff Ratcliffe(6) with 39 points on the back nine. They were beaten into second by the Ed Wilkinson(6) Warrington team including. Pete Atherton(11) Martin France(3) and Roger Percival(6)

Simon Hemsley was on good form even before he went out to play.
‘ I’ve only been here once before and I won.’ Announced the modest Bramall man. Today he teamed up with Joe Kirwan(7), Ian King(7) and Gareth Bradley (+2) and they had the best of the weather as they went out first and set a target of 85 points that no team came close to threatening. The team picked up four birdies on the tricky par threes.
Well played lads terrific golf.

Once again there was 100% attendance which is terrific. Thanks very much.

Maxitours at wonderful Hazel Grove

Maxitours at wonderful Hazel Grove

Hazel Grove was the latest high quality Cheshire course to host Maxitours this Summer. This is an incredibly friendly Club with front man and highly respected PGA professional James Rowlands setting the tone with his brilliant demeanour. The ladies section always do us an amazing half-way house with money generously going to charity. Red blooded Colin Roberts was struggling to socially distance from the attractive trio. Thanks to everyone at this great venue for your superb hospitality – what a Club!

Rob Platt and his team travelled over from Barnsley today. I love these guys. Team mate Carl Mollart went to the school where they filmed ‘Kes’ and he has played many times on the football pitch where Brian Glover brilliantly played the PE Teacher. Rob never managed to have a kestrel as a pet but he did have a magpie called Maggie. Unfortunately, it broke its leg when his Dad slammed the lounge door. He used a couple of swan vestas as a splint. You couldn’t make it up.

Dave Cooper has been in his garden for two months and he said it is now looking superb. He has been on a golf course for over 20 years but unfortunately his game is not quite as superb. His team finished 28th today.

Roy Ainsworth is a brilliant guy. I have heard every excuse in the book but Roy blames his slice on the fact that he has played lots of squash rather than tennis. That’s a new one on me Roy but it sounds very good.

Fred Ganton made use of the hand sanitisers on offer today and I saw him use them at least four times. ‘I’m also thinking of washing my hands with this team they are so bad!’ He announced after his round.

In today’s event scoring was again very close with four teams sharing second with 81 points

Heyroses’ Lewis Marland(15), Neale Laurent(14), Phil Dickens(13) and John Harrop(10) took 5th but better back nines were played by the Stamford golf club team of Phil Hudson(6) his son Sam Hudson(9), Michael Grainger(5) and Carlton Wheeldon(6). Roger Percival’s(5) men took third with a homeward 42 points. Martin France(2) Ed Wilkinson(5) and Peter Atherton(11) completed the team

Joe Yates(14) Lymm team took 2nd with an impressive 44 on the back nine. Joe played with his more talented son Paul,(9) John Morton(13) and Gary Neiles(7).

Winning were the third father and son combination to play today! Whitefield’s Nick Ford(11) and Nick Ford junior (13) teamed up with John Safhill (6)and Rob Rhodes(7) they had a great team effort to score 84 points and earn a three shot victory.

Well played chaps.
Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance once again. Brilliant.

Maxitours at historic Cavendish

It was great to see all my friends/clients back playing Maxitours today. To the best of my knowledge all my players have stayed safe so far in these trying times which is terrific news.

Huge thanks to Cavendish Golf Club for hosting todays’ event. I have had many enjoyable rounds on this Mackenzie designed golf course and I can highly recommend a golf club away day on this little gem.

You have to play Cavendish at least once in your life!!!!

‘When are we coming back?’ Requested Steve Heyward ‘That is great fun out there.’
‘We loved it’ Said Hale’s well-travelled Brian Greenbank ‘What a great design!’

There were the obvious jokes throughout the day about weight gaining in lockdown especially when Roger Percival struggled to squeeze through the Clubhouse entrance. The most shocking sight however was the amount of hair on show. Balding players like Ed Wilkinson and Dave Wainwright looked absolutely no different from last time I saw them despite having not visiting the barber for months but Nigel Ashton and Lee Tilley were unrecognisable and both of them looked like rats peeping out of a haystack.

There was some big hitting today and Mark Grant hit his tee shot through the back of the par four 3rd hole. He still managed a ‘Dominic Cummings’ (Drove too far but got off without any penalty) and came off with a three.

Crazy Welshman Dave Cooper is a lovely bloke but rarely in the prizes. He checked in today and announced that he was picking up his balls for a two he had at Turton Golf Club before the lock down. Nice try Dave but I’ve never been to Turton in my life.

The course was playing just over 5500 yards which is the shortest track on the Maxitours rota yet the scoring was the worst of the season! It just shows that a great course designer doesn’t need length to produce a testing golf course.

Jim Caldwells group were out first and team member Bryson Brooks(6) equalled a maxitours record three 2’s they had a team score of 76 which was good enough for fourth place. James(4) and Russell Cash(6) completed the team.

Richard Blackwell had a career best two 2’s as he led his team into third place with 77 points. Dan Moore(18) Tony Jennison (6) and Joh Hilton(13) were his team mates

Taking second place with just 78 points was a very surprised Lymm team of Roger Percival(6), Martin France(3)Malc Thornily(8) and Ed Wilkinson(6) they scored six under and picked up five of those shots on the 10th and 11th !

Winning his first ever Maxitours event after 5 years of trying was ex- fireman Kevin Hart(9) and his pals Karl Stott(8) Paul Yearsley(10) and John McAtee(7). They picked up 6 points on their opening two holes to be out in 42 points and then they hung on through the back nine managing to score 37 points to take first place. Ex Rugby league star John McAtee made a great par on the last to seal the victory by a single shot. Well played chaps

Many thanks to housewife favourite Richard Blackwell for providing 80 small alcohol hand sanitizers for our players today – look at www.hand-sanitiser-uk.org if you require any for your Club! I gave one to Phil Robinson and he started to drink it half way through his round because his team were playing so badly.

Thanks for your support today. Great to see you all looking so well.

Yours in golf, Tim
