Maxitours at astounding Astbury

Another tremendous day was enjoyed by all at Astbury Golf Club. This wonderful Club sits at the foothills of the Derbyshire Pennines but is a classic Cheshire parkland course – with wildlife filled ponds, stunning trees and hedgerows and beautiful fairways and greens. It even has its own railway line and canal. The designers have thought of everything.

What they couldn’t think of was how to ensure Graham Wilkinson arrived at the correct golf club. I was slightly worried that some of my players may go to the new Astbury Golf and lodge complex in Shropshire but daft graham decided to go to Eaton. Nobody including Graham knows why he went there.

Angie and her catering staff are brilliant and they were delighted to have such great support from our players throughout the day. Thank you to everyone for supporting these host clubs so well each week, please keep it up!

The worst golfer in maxitours history – 34 handicapper Stuart ‘old man’ Hibbert – played today. It is always good to see this gent.

‘Can I have a scorecard please?’ He asked.

I gave him one and informed him that there was a bin near the 3rd tee.

‘That’s good to know’ He replied.

The incessant recent rainfall meant there was less run on the immaculate fairways than usual, the course was playing long and the greens were receptive. Astbury was definitely a big hitters golf course and this showed in the results.

Martin Humphries(11) and his team set the pace early in the day with a solid 84. Dave Hest(12), Adrian Brown(13) and Keith Shale(14) had 46 points on the front nine before reality set in and they came home in a less magnificent 38 points to take 3rd,

Jim Caldwell is as fit as a flea but results have been quiet in recent weeks. It was back to business today with 87 points to take 2nd place. Peter Griggs(11) ,Steve Perrett(12)and John Roome(15) completed the team.

It was the big hitting Bolton quartet of Scott Booth (8) Gary Myerscough(8) John Dempsey (scr) and Danny Swarsbrick(11) who took the honours today. Dempsey made eagle on the par four 13th but Danny Swarsbrick did the damage with a super 3 gross birdies and an eagle.

‘I cant play any better than that!’

Reported the likeable Lancastrian who also scooped nearest the pin on the 15th,

Thanks to everyone for supporting todays event.

Yours in golf, Tim
