Maxitours at magical Mottram Hall
Despite even more heavy overnight rain Mottram Hall green keepers presented a very playable golf course to host todays Maxitours event. The course was playing long but the greens here are always superb and the front nine always drains incredibly well.
There were a few tired and windswept looking golfers in the clubhouse but everyone looked happy just to be playing golf with good friends on a great course.
‘I needed to play golf this week!’ Said an exasperated Dave Cane.
‘ Its lashing down on Wednesday.’
There were two Pete Athertons playing today. The well-spoken, athletic looking, bronzed, Prestbury Peter with chiseled features and then we have Lymms Salad dodging Pete. Both had exactly the same score- 69. Prestbury Pete headed to the gym after his round and Lymm Pete headed to Greggs desperately hoping they hadn’t sold out of his favourite -a Cornish vasty.
Things were a little warmer today and when the sun made a very brief appearance it definitely looked higher in the sky than it has done for the previous two or three months. Its been a struggle for a couple of my mates who are club pros with their golf courses closed for weeks at a time. My pal is pro at a wealthy Cheshire club which has been closed for most of December and January and he said things hit a new low when one of his millionaires had been deliberating for several weeks whether to buy a pair of footjoy winter mitts. He turned up on Saturday wearing a pair of oven gloves instead.
Scoring was tough as the course was playing long and a stiff breeze added to the difficulty.
Fifth place went to Ed Pysdens Prestbury team with 79 points which narrowly beat Tytheringtons Dave More O’Farrells team on a card play off.
Phil Dickens continued his excellent form with 80 points playing alongside Paul Robinson, Neil Evans and Steve Blakeway.
Taking third place was New Mills’ Tony Jennison, Dan Moore, Richard Blackwell and Gary Smith who had a very solid team effort and recorded 81 points.
Hazel grove brothers Dave and Mike Stewardson, Joe Shelley and Duncan Cocker scored 83 points late in the day which just lost on the back six holes of a card play off. Unlucky guys but a fine performance.
Taking the honours were Saddleworth’s Dave Sarsfield, Dave Rhodes, Lee Tilley and Pete Norbury who scored 83 points. A steady first 8 holes concluded with 7 points on the 9th which gave them a great foundation heading into the back nine. Well played chaps great score.
