Maxitours at cruel but classy Conwy

Cruel but classy Conwy

Conwy is one of the top courses in Wales, this classic links has a great history and has reduced many players to tears over the years. Today, it once again bared its teeth with narrow fairways, deep rough and fast greens.

‘The course is set up for a major championship, have they got any big events coming up?’ Asked Richard Wakefield. This is a big event Richard.

‘I played Carnoustie and it was easy- like a pitch and putt compared to this!’ Reported a beleaguered Lee Hall.

The Club professional championship actually takes place next week and that event is nearly as big as a the Maxitours Welsh Classic.

Brian Barnes was out early on the final round of the Spanish Open and posted a 66 but was miles behind the leader. He famously got steaming drunk in the bar before the wind picked up and he tied first. He won the play off carrying a bottle of lager.

Around thirty five of the forty teams competing have also written themselves off in incredibly tough conditions – keep off the booze lads – you can still win this tomorrow.

If you do go out then Weatherspoons is the place to be tonight. It’s the only bar open in Llandudno on a Monday night. Last year there were 150 golfers and three local grandma’s on a day out from Wrexham. They were buzzing.

Taking the early lead are three teams on just 75 points. All teams scored better on the back nine and it was Dave Marchants team who fared best .

Late in the day the wind dropped and the Hazel Grove team of ex Captain Simon Ashton, Mike Jones, John Tetlow and Darren Wilkinson came in with a superb 81. These are brilliant guys who play each week without much success and are very popular leaders. Tomorrow they need to answer a big question. Do nice guys come first?

It was lovely to see John Webb back playing his first game for two years after a recent illness. He is a great bloke and I’ve never seen anyone look so happy after playing so badly.

Get to bed.

Tim.
