Maxitours at enjoyable Helsby

Helsby in deepest darkest Cheshire is always a real gem. The course is surrounded by farmland and is a very peaceful and relaxing place to play some competitive golf. Even Bob Saunders knuckles weren’t as white as usual as he relaxed his grip and smelt the flowers during his round today.

Helsby golf course is graced with several spectacular doglegs which meander through the beautiful ancient oaks.
Whilst most courses in Cheshire have brown parched fairways Helsbys were incredibly lush and green – I have no idea why -quite bizarre considering the lack of rain but great to play golf shots from.

Thanks to Rob behind the bar who is always a friendly face and always looks after us so well.
Karen Gallagher ran the event this morning before I took over and the attractive stand in did a superb job as usual. Thanks Karen.

I have no idea where Neil Pemberton hit his golf ball today but when he was in the Clubhouse having his pint of beer he was pulling leaves, grass and twigs out of his hair. There was even a caterpillar trying to escape the debris.

Tony Leighs wife is more intelligent than him. She asked her husband this morning why he stills plays golf each week even though he never comes home with a prize.
‘ I have no idea.’ Was all he could think of to reply.

It was rewarding to see so many happy faces in the Clubhouse. Mark Bex is a lovely bloke and I overheard him saying how much he loves golf and having a pint with his pals after play. What on earth would we be doing if we didn’t play this great game. We are all blessed.

In today’s event there was a strong breeze all day at Helsby which kept the rain away and made for enjoyable but testing conditions.

Wychwoods larger than life and very likeable Martin Wainman(11) led his team of Simon Dyson(10), Matthew Jackson(3) and Mike Upton(5) into 3rd place with 84 points. Uptons birdie at the last was a thing of beauty.

Second today was the Prestbury team of Chris Adams(10), Steve Best(4), Andy Oakes(6) and Steve Hall (16). Hall and Adams are past Prestbury Captains, Besty Captains the successful Prestbury ‘A’ team and Andy Oakes bring the sandwiches.

Late in the day Hopwoods Steve(5) and Janet Heywood(8) teamed up with Mellors’ marvellous Chris Lee(9) and Graham Davenport(8) to also score 84 points but they won the card play off after a superb 44 points on the tougher back nine. The team picked up shots over possibly the toughest closing stretch in Cheshire golf. Davenport even won nearest the pin after a fine shot to the 18th and then coolly rolled the ball home to take a hard fought win. The stuff of fairy tales. Well played guys. Excellent!
