Maxitours at Mottram Hall

Maxitours players battled the elements at Mottram Hall today.
I was incredibly impressed by everyone’s staying power as I watched the umbrellas pass by. Thanks so much. I played here two weeks ago and the greens are up there with the best in Cheshire. The fairways also drain incredibly well. Congratulations to the green staff for presenting such a great course.

Lack of wind meant it wasn’t biting cold but unfortunately the clouds never parted as predicted and rain fell for most of the day.
‘I’ve taken off 5 layers and managed to find one that’s only semi damp!’ Announced positive Neil Pemberton as he came in the Clubhouse after his round.

If it makes you feel any better I actually got a little bit of heatstroke as I sat next to the roaring Mottram Hall Club house fire watching the first day of the cricket unfold. I had to have a glass of iced water to cool down.

I used to work at Mottram Hall and had over fifteen happy years here. A highlight was one evening when I was cashing up I looked around to see Norman Wisdom walk in the shop. He pretended to trip over one of the golf bags to make me smile. Classic. Teaching Jeremy Clarkson was also interesting and still clear in my memory- he was not the greatest listener I have ever coached.

Golf courses in Winter play so much longer than in the Summer. The 17th hole had a 164 yard carry over water –the air was so heavy it was a good hit with a driver for lots of players today. Jimmy Cox checked to see if his ball had a puncture.
‘It was going nowhere today.’ Added the likeable Denton man.

In today’s event even David Gill who was the brains behind the rise of Manchester United in the 90’s couldn’t raise the fortunes of his Hale team and they finished 4th last on 75 points. Lets hope the reds fare better tonight.

Howard Kelley and his Tytherington men continued their good form and took 3rd place with 84 points.
First place was decided on an incredibly tight card play-off.
Ashton in Makerfields Barry Caldwell, John Lee, Paul Woods and Alan Scott had the round of their lives and a homeward 45 points saw them score 86 points.
Steve Austin, Richard Blackwell, John Hilton and Andy Hamlett used to be members at Mottram Hall and they made the most of their local knowledge to score 86 points, also scoring 45 on the back nine. They scored six points on each of the closing three holes to take first prize.

Thanks for your support everyone. Shrigley Hall next week before the Christmas break.
Yours in Golf,
Tim
