Maxitours at exclusive Eaton
A brilliant days golf was enjoyed by all at Eaton Golf Club today.
The exclusive course has USGA greens and they are recognised as the best all year round surfaces in Cheshire. They were excellent once again today.
There is a terrific feel to the Club, ex-Marine Russ behind the bar is class and highly respected pro Bill Tye is recognised as the best club fitter in the area and runs a brilliant pro shop.
The stunning new course opened 1993 when it was moved due to security reasons. The original course was constructed in 1918 on the Eaton estate to help injured soldiers rebuild their lives. There is a touching statue near the clubhouse to remember these brave men.
I had a phone call from one of my players this week telling me that there were two Eaton golf courses in England.
‘Are we playing the course near Chester or Norwich?’ He asked.
Take a wild guess.
Eighty two year old Veteran Dave Cooper turned up this morning looking great as usual.
‘Am I the oldest man in the field today?’ He asked.
‘You are the oldest guy in the field every week ‘I reassured him.
Ten minutes later John Linsky from Birchwood walked in.
‘Is it free for me today – it’s my 86th birthday tomorrow?’ What a great game this is. These men are living a proper life. I love it.
Another lovely old bloke playing today was Ross Bunting. He turned up late after taking a detour via ElIesmere Port and Chester Zoo.
‘Why didn’t you use sat nav?’ I asked.
‘I don’t like modern technology, I really enjoy getting lost all by myself.’
When he finished his round I asked him how he was getting home?
‘I’m following that man.’ He said pointing to one of his team mates in the car park.
‘Does he live near you?’
‘I’ve no idea.’
Mick Mahon and Barry Wilson took nearest the pins after excellent shots into the short holes.
Phil Dickens team had the best back nine of the day coming home in 47 points. Unfortunately they only had 33 points going out.
Taking the early lead were Birchwoods Peter Fildes, Tony Hope, Mike Roberts and Mike Tinsley with a great 84 points. Two solid 9’s of 42 points saw the likeable quartet eventually finish third.
Hazel grove solicitor and all round nice guy Simon Ashton(8) led his team of Mick Jones(8), Dan Moss(3) and Rick Booth(11) into second place also with 84 points. A dropped shot on the 17th proved costly…
Prestburys Geoff Bickerton(4) lives in the shadow of his Algarvian Classic winning wife Jacqui but every dog has his day and today was Geoffs’ day. His team came home in 45 points gathering 6 gross birdies between them. Mark Richardson(2) shot -2 himself and Steve Booth(7) and Andy Russell(9) also chipped in their fair share. Well played guys – a terrific performance on a beautiful golf course.
I hope you all had a wonderful day.
Thanks so much
Tim
