Maxitours at Wonderful North Wales

North Wales was in tremendous condition for the final round of the famous Welsh Classic. I had heard great reports about the golf course but things have really improved over the last couple of years. This is an absolute cracker.

The clubhouse service has always been excellent and Jamie and his team were first class once again today.

Nigel Davenport is a class golfer. But a night out with the Wilkinson brothers would see off Tiger Woods. The ex-Lancashire junior saw his first drive of the day hit a post just in front of the tee and the ball finished behind him. He then impressed by finishing his round driving the 309 yard 18th hole. Class is permanent. Thankfully a night out with the Wilkinsons is temporary.

Jeremy Lawton went out with his team to a lovely local fish restaurant called the Seahorse. Everybody orders the locally caught seafood there. For some reason Jeremy ordered meat and potato pie with chips and vegetables. The vegetables came with potatoes.

When asked why he didn’t order fish he replied.

‘I have absolutely no idea. I don’t even like potatoes’.

I had my eye on the seafood basket all day on the North Wales Golf Club specials board but when I came to order it late in the day I was had sold out. Dave Hughes had the last one and was smiling at me. Not a great move Dave. No free drops for the rest of your Maxitours career. EVER.

In todays event Paul Fells (6)team had a much-needed win. They scored a super 84 points in the breezier morning conditions. Retired head teacher Nigel Ashton(11) was on fire and Colin Bryan(5) and Mike Lowe(8) both contributed well for their best performance of the year.

In the overall 2 day Welsh Classic it was a Cinderella story for Dave Griffiths(17), Roger Arnold(4) Chris Bracchi (8) Dave Conville (11) They followed up a solid 81 points at Conwy with 82 points today to take the biggest victory of their lives. Dave birdied the last. He was thinking of giving up the game 12 months ago because he was playing so poorly. What a man.

Excellent!

Paul Fells team finished 2nd overall and Dave Sarsfields team (Dave Rhodes (9) Pete Norbury (16) and Ian Hogg (11) were 3rd after a special 83 points today.

Thanks to everyone for your amazing support. No issues at all and everyone playing in the right spirit with integrity and class. It’s a real privilege to run these events for you guys.

Tim.

Results from Welsh Classic Day 1 at Conwy

Welsh Classic Day 1 at classic Conwy.

Perfect seaside links conditions greeted my Maxitours competitors today at Conwy golf club. Clear blue skies and a gentle westerly breeze meant there were more than a few happy sunburnt faces drinking beer in the Clubhouse after play. The historic course is in a class of its own.

We were looked after today exceptionally well by new Clubhouse manager Sean and his very attentive team. Thanks so much.

Nathan Mills and his Saddleworth team had a decent score today and are in the mix. He is eating and drinking cobra at the Blue Elephant Indian restaurant tonight. Doesn’t sound like ideal preparation to me. His team could fall off a Welsh cliff tomorrow.
Several years ago a maxitous player had one too many guinesses and lost his team mates in Llandudno. He phoned them at three in the morning. They asked him where he was.
‘I have no idea but I can hear the sea.’ He replied.
Take it steady lads.

Rather like the US Open it is a very unusual leaderboard heading into the final round. Not a single player in the top ten teams has had a Maxitours victory within the last two years. Captains Bob Eastwood, Dave Griffiths and Tony O’Gara have to keep their respective teams relaxed tonight.

Big Kevin Warburton was talking nonsense before his round. ‘Ive lost a stone which is good for my health but it has affected my swing and it has made me play bad golf recently.’ Despite nearly wasting away, sixteen stone Kev (13)still managed to help his team into 2nd place with 83 points playing alongside Heyrose legends Paul Salt(12), George Kerr(2) and Chris Stretch(10).

Bramhalls low handicappers Matt Ford(5), Andy Bradshaw(0), Seb Etchells(1) and Andrew Clarke(6) surprised themselves as they took the lead with 83 points and an excellent back nine. They made the most of the reachable par fives to take top spot today. Superb golf guys.

Get to bed everyone..

Maxitours at Delightful Davenport

A brilliant days golf at Davenport was enjoyed by well over 100 Maxitours players.

Clubhouse manager Frazer has been here for 16 years and is loved by all the members and visitors alike, Ex European Tour player and club pro Tony Stevens is a class act and delighted to be named Club Captain next year.

There is something special about this club. After their round so many players came into the clubhouse and told me how much they enjoyed playing the course- it was incredible.

I think it is the peaceful surroundings which make this so pleasurable – you are up in the hills miles from the nearest main road, shops or housing estates. And the views over the Cheshire plain are outstanding.

Despite the views Kevin Hart had a bad day. His team let him down on the course. To cheer himself up he phoned his home pro to see who he had drawn in the US Open sweep.

All I could hear was ‘Who the hell is Scott Vincent? I’ve got more chance of winning the US Open than he has.’

Conditions were tough. I think the scoring is possibly the lowest in Maxitours history today as the Davenport greens got the better of my players today. The wind was up and retired commercial airline pilot Dave Keen reported that a 50 mile an hour squall went through causing him to three putt. Likeable Keen admitted that he wouldn’t fancy landing a plane in these conditions.

It is a good job Dave Smith was in the Hale team this afternoon. He recorded a career best four gross birdies on the closing nine holes. Despite this his team came home in just 35 points. ‘I only play with them because they are nice blokes.’ Admitted seven handicapper Smith

Chris Lee was delighted not to be in the prizes after scoring 71 today. He won an expensive new Galvin Green ratchet belt recently but fastened it too tight and was late going to bed as he couldn’t take his pants off. It took him and his wife nearly an hour to take them off. He hasn’t used it since.

Hazel Grove’s Mike Wood(14) is rightly proud of his daughter Amie Lou Wood who is a famous Hollywood actress and was in White Lotus. Mike did some great acting himself when he impersonated a good golfer for a few holes. He played alongside his son Frankie(6), Darren Wilkinson(8) and George Aizlewood(11) As the team finished second with 81 points.

They beat Dave Rhodes(13), Lee Tilley(9), Peter Sparkes(11) and Dave Sarsfield(15) on a card play off who were delighted to find some form before the Welsh Classic.

Winning today was Wychwoods Dave Goodwin(8), Richard Williamson(8), Paul Woodbine(6) and Alex Smith(7). This team was regularly near the bottom of the leaderboard before Sir Alex joined the team and put them back on top of the perch. 82 points was excellent on a tough day on a quality course. Thanks to everyone for playing. What a day!

Maxitours at perfect Preston

Preston was in superb condition for todays event. The greens were immaculate and so were the fairways. There was a fresh breeze throughout the day which kept scores lower than usual around this fantastic golf course.

‘That’s my favourite course we play!’ Declared intelligent Maxitours ever-present Neale Laurent.

It’s a long day for me at Preston as I hand cards out at the range and I don’t have a chair to sit in all day as I stand behind the repairs desk. I still enjoy myself though and it’s great fun especially when I have to answer daft questions.
‘Where is the pro shop?’ Asked Peter Newey when he checked in.
‘It’s that huge thing three yards to my left, the big room you are looking at with lots of golf things you can buy, Peter.’

The Lancashire county championship was hosted here last week and there were several plus three and plus four players in the field. Over four rounds and out of 140 scratch golfers nobody finished under par which reflects how tricky this layout can play despite being a relatively short course.
Only six teams scored more than eighty points today off yellow tees which again shows both the difficulty of the course and also the tremendous integrity of my players.

Winning with a hard fought 84 points and a superb 45 point back nine were Dave Hughes(13), Steve Lamont(6), Andy Clarkson(6) and Pete Gold (8). Pete struck Gold on the tough 18th hole where he made only the second birdie of the day to take the card play off victory. Dave Hughes parred the famous last three holes. Superb.

Well played chaps.
Very popular winners indeed.

Maxitours at enjoyable Helsby

Helsby in deepest darkest Cheshire is always a real gem. The course is surrounded by farmland and is a very peaceful and relaxing place to play some competitive golf. Even Bob Saunders knuckles weren’t as white as usual as he relaxed his grip and smelt the flowers during his round today.

Helsby golf course is graced with several spectacular doglegs which meander through the beautiful ancient oaks.
Whilst most courses in Cheshire have brown parched fairways Helsbys were incredibly lush and green – I have no idea why -quite bizarre considering the lack of rain but great to play golf shots from.

Thanks to Rob behind the bar who is always a friendly face and always looks after us so well.
Karen Gallagher ran the event this morning before I took over and the attractive stand in did a superb job as usual. Thanks Karen.

I have no idea where Neil Pemberton hit his golf ball today but when he was in the Clubhouse having his pint of beer he was pulling leaves, grass and twigs out of his hair. There was even a caterpillar trying to escape the debris.

Tony Leighs wife is more intelligent than him. She asked her husband this morning why he stills plays golf each week even though he never comes home with a prize.
‘ I have no idea.’ Was all he could think of to reply.

It was rewarding to see so many happy faces in the Clubhouse. Mark Bex is a lovely bloke and I overheard him saying how much he loves golf and having a pint with his pals after play. What on earth would we be doing if we didn’t play this great game. We are all blessed.

In today’s event there was a strong breeze all day at Helsby which kept the rain away and made for enjoyable but testing conditions.

Wychwoods larger than life and very likeable Martin Wainman(11) led his team of Simon Dyson(10), Matthew Jackson(3) and Mike Upton(5) into 3rd place with 84 points. Uptons birdie at the last was a thing of beauty.

Second today was the Prestbury team of Chris Adams(10), Steve Best(4), Andy Oakes(6) and Steve Hall (16). Hall and Adams are past Prestbury Captains, Besty Captains the successful Prestbury ‘A’ team and Andy Oakes bring the sandwiches.

Late in the day Hopwoods Steve(5) and Janet Heywood(8) teamed up with Mellors’ marvellous Chris Lee(9) and Graham Davenport(8) to also score 84 points but they won the card play off after a superb 44 points on the tougher back nine. The team picked up shots over possibly the toughest closing stretch in Cheshire golf. Davenport even won nearest the pin after a fine shot to the 18th and then coolly rolled the ball home to take a hard fought win. The stuff of fairy tales. Well played guys. Excellent!
