| Maxitours at perfect Prestbury – Autumn Classic Day 1
Prestbury Golf Club was presented in its usual tremendous condition. Mark Crossley is recognised as the best greenkeeper in the North West and his team didn’t disappoint our players today- brilliant. Last weeks’ greens at Helsby were heaven sent but Prestbury’s were also rolling fast and beautifully true at eleven on the stimp meter. Intelligent Martin Bramwell thought they were the best he had played on all year. Thanks to everyone at this great Club for a wonderful day. Paul Evans is a great lad and has played Maxitours for the past five years. He has always had exactly the same 22 handicap as his seventy year old Dad over this period. When he checked in today he told me his Dad was still playing off 22 but he had crept up to 23. ‘I am so ashamed.’ Was all he could mutter. Twenty years ago I played my one and only European Tour event and I was lucky enough to play a practice round with the legend that is Bernard Langer. In his pocket the perfectionist had a detailed aerial map of the course and a compass so he could work out the exact wind direction on the tree lined Slaley course. Before he went out Norman Rolt asked if there was a map on the scorecard. I was very impressed and asked if he was using it to work out the general wind direction. ‘No I want to know where the toilets are.’ He replied. Team Manager Roy Ainsworth can sympathise with Jose Mourinho as he has lost total respect for his players. ‘They are all overpaid prima donna’s.’ He said of his team as they could only manage 73 points. ‘It took Brian Ankers nineteen holes to get the speed of the greens’. In today’s event despite extremely pleasant temperatures and immaculate greens the scoring was the worst in Maxitours history. There were lots of reports of four and five putting from close range. Dave Greenwoods team took 6th and Martin Bramwells men took 5th place with both teams also on 77 points. Andy Veitch was in Martins’ Hale team and he told me that he left ten shots on the golf course- bad luck Andy… Third place went to big hitting Charles Herbert(19) Ross Birch(9) Barney Ross(6) and Paul Dalby(5) The quality quartet only scored 2 points on the tough 18th when 4 would have been enough for victory. The Romiley pair of Phil Roberts(5)and Steve Harrison(13) won the Clubs foursomes knockout at the weekend and they continued their purple patch by recorded a gross birdie and an eagle on the 1st hole for seven points. They then battled their way to 80 points to earn a Maxitours podium finish. Stockports Rick Davies(7) and Les Ross(13) completed the happy quartet. Neil Edwards’ Ashton in Makerfield team took 1st place also with 80 points. They also had a great front nine recording 43 points but were hanging on by the skin of their teeth on the tougher closing holes to record a first ever Maxitours win. Adrian Price(15) Jimmy Shirley(12) and Jimmy McEwan(7) completed the delighted four ball. Well played chaps. Thanks to all who played, I am sure you had a great day. Results from high quality Helsby- space at Hopwood on Friday!!!
Next week- two great events!

There is also room for 1 team who wish to play both days of the Autumn Classic.
Maxitours at high quality Helsby
Maxitours visited Helsby for the first time ever today and there were so many positive reports we hope to be back very soon!
Legendary course architect James Braid designed the front nine holes at Helsby which opened in 1936 and the course became 18 holes in 1968 when the tougher back nine opened. It has since matured into a real gem of a golf course.
Everyone at this lovely Cheshire Club was very friendly. Thanks to the caterers (the bacon baps were right up there with the best on the circuit) and to Head Greens keeper Peter Webster – one of the reasons I wanted to come to Helsby was because I had heard great things about the greens and our players were not disappointed today.
The feedback was tremendous:
‘That was in great condition’
‘The course was set up superbly- the pin positions were set up for a club championship -excellent’
‘Considering the summer, the course was remarkably good-it puts our course to shame’
‘I think the greenkeeper must have an had an argument with his wife- those pins were brutal!’
Roy Ainsworth loves his golf but the lovely Antrobus member has had a virus all week and he felt so bad that he had to walk in after nine. ‘I was ill before I teed off but to be honest the way the rest of my team was playing made me feel really poorly.’
Scruffy Barry Simpson left his cap at Ringway last month and he was delighted to be reunited with the smelly old item when I returned it to him today. ‘It has sentimental value.’ Claimed Barry. The cap seemed to have missed its owner as it made its’ own way across the table towards the Lymm man.
In today’s event there were superb conditions for a great score however the lightning fast greens and tucked away pin positions meant scoring was tough.
There was a Maxitours first when Harry Marsh blamed his poor golf on the fact that we crossed on the Clubhouse stairs before play ‘. ‘My Grandma always told me it would bring me bad luck.’
Dave Rhodes has been working hard on his course management. After much deliberation on the driveable par four 1st hole he sensibly took his 4 iron for safety. Unfortunately, he hit it straight out of bounds.
John Hunt(18) looked surprised with himself in the clubhouse after his unusually good round. He plays with a lovely couple- Dr Alison(15) and Dr James Shipstone(10) most weeks and they joined him again today. James or ‘Harold’ as he is known to his better friends were surprised to finish in 4th with 78 points. Liz Halliwell(14) completed the mixed team.
Jim Caldwell(11)was out in the second match of the day this morning and he looked disappointed when he handed his card in . ‘I think that will be in the middle of the pack.’ Estimated the multimillionaire however he overestimated the talent on show and will enjoy his supper tonight after reading the results and discovering that it was good enough for third place. Jon Hume(13) Dave Thomas(16) and Peter Griggs(15) w his talented partners.
Second place went to Bramall’s Les Russon(12) and his three pals who are members at Macclesfield Golf Club- Paul Carroll(20), Clive Howlett(18) and Rick Kershaw(22). Russon is in his sixties but still looks fit as a fiddle and he birdied the tough seventeenth before making a solid par on the 200 yard final hole to secure silver.
Winning today with a record low score of 81 points was newly retired Lewis Marland(14), Neale Laurent(12), Kev Seaton(5) and Josh Ainscough(2). After just 38 points on the easier front nine the team combined well to score 43 on the back nine to earn a first win of the year. Well played chaps.
I hope you have a great weekend watching the strong American team beat us in the Ryder Cup – if things get too bad you can always turn over and watch Jose Mourinho’s entertaining Manchester United get beaten by West Ham.
Thanks to all who played, I hope you had a great day.
Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at Classy Clitheroe
| Maxitours Portugal trip- Full- let me know if you fanct 2020!
Maxitours at Classy Clitheroe Clitheroe is a stunning golf course set in the beautiful Ribble Valley and at least five of today’s players declared it as their favourite venue of the year. The course was incredibly lush and the USGA greens were excellent considering we had more than half an inch of rain overnight. Thanks to everyone at this friendly club for making us feel so welcome. Mike Gauden offered to drive his team this morning. When he picked up his good pal Dave Stanhope apparently he nearly got mauled to death by Dave’s ‘very friendly’ new golden retriever puppy. Mike got his own back on the tricky golf course which well and truly chewed Dave up and spat him out. The Winter tour should be released tomorrow -I am just waiting for 1 Club to confirm. As a few of our wealthy players are in their twilight years and could perhaps do with a make-over a botox company is thinking of sponsoring an event. That should raise a few eyebrows. Stuburt Order of merit leader Paul Fell finished further down the field than usual with an average 40 points today. His excuse was that he got accidentally hit on the kneecap by his playing partner Mike ‘scruffy’ Lowe. To add insult to injury Lowe removed and signed his seven year old Dunlop golf glove as an apology. Paul put it in the nearest bin. In todays event the scores were better in the morning before the breeze picked up a little in the afternoon. The course is not long but it is a terrific layout and you have to have great course management and drive it straight. This ruled out 90% of today’s field. Intelligent Jon Hudson(9) and Jim Jones(21) took 4th place with 43 points. They were pipped into 3rd spot by the wise silver fox Jack Coleman(17) and Steve Mattinson(6). I am not sure what age Jack is but unless he had a tough paper round when he was a boy he must be at least 75 years old. Jack still has a lovely relaxed swing and a very cool even temperament so we can all learn a lot from him. His very slightly younger partner Steve kept thing’s steady on the tough back nine and the Dunham men were delighted to finally get on the Maxitours podium. Jimmy McEwan(7) and Steve Woods(23) were in the 2nd match out and they both played great golf and they narrowly took the runners up spot with 44 points. Winning today was the Ashton-in-Makerfield pairing of Dave Lee(20) and Mark Holland(7). They scored an impressive 46 points in a real team effort –Mark birdied a couple of his shot holes and Dave made the most of his many shots! Well played chaps great score. Two lovely guys won nearest the pin. Ian King was first out and he drilled it within two feet of the pin on the 5th and stylish Ed Wilkinson nearly holed his spin loaded approach on the superb 17th hole. Thanks for your support. Once again Maxitours players showed your true class as there was not a single no show- thank you very much indeed for your unrivalled integrity. Tim Nearest the Pin 5th Ed Wilkinson Dozen AD333s
