Maxitours at Hopwood

There was a very healthy vibe around Hopwood Golf Club for today’s Maxitours event. The caterers and steward are right up there with the best in the business and their members assured me on arrival that the golf course was in the best condition it had been in for many years- my players certainly agreed with these views.

‘That was terrific!’ reported David Kelly.

‘Its a great track, that, me duck.’ said Midlander Pete Keena.

‘That is the best course we play on all year’ noted well travelled Richard Palmer.

‘That is one amazing golf course’ said John Farnon. ‘But it was also really tough, sloping greens, not much run, strong breeze…..’
‘And lack of talent’ added his playing partner.

Thanks to departing Secretary and lovely lady Geraldine Connor for all her help over the years – definitely one of the best in the business.

Dave Beard and Rob Little looked a little bit concerned when they checked in and I told them that they were playing with a magistrate and a judge, Pete Cotton and Jonty Geake. In the bar after play it was a unanimous decision and all four players were found to be guilty of playing some very bad golf.

It is great to see Maxitours continue to move upmarket and attract some real upper class players. I asked Andy Thompson what he was having for his supper ‘ tuna and pasta ‘ he replied. ‘That’s an amazing coincidence so am I! ‘ I replied – ‘do you like it in sunflower oil or in brine?’ ‘Medium rare with seasonal vegetables ‘ quickly replied the cultured Ringway man .

In today’s event Knutsford nice guy John Anderton teamed up with my brother Simon. Last year John was enjoying a relaxing swim in the Caribbean when a barracuda bit the end of his finger off. He came home in an ambulance once again today after cruising to 24 points on the front nine before sinking to 13 on the back nine.

Top solicitor Simon Ashton(9) and Chris Hayes(5) from Hazel Grove Golf Club took 5th spot with 42 points narrowly missing out on a card play-off to Mottram Hall’s Richard Blackwell(13) and John Hilton(13) in 4th and also Brian Greenbank (6)and Matt Nelstrup(9) from Hale who had a superior back nine to take 3rd place.

Dave Harlow(16) from Knutsford and Alan Beesley(6) from the Mere set the early pace with an excellent 43 points. Dave had a successful marque business and despite a few ropey shots on the front nine he was never going to collapse. Three superb pars over the closing five holes secured second place.

Brothers Dave(13) and Mike(21) Wainwright from Hale GC were delighted with their first ever Maxitours victory. Their father owned Jenson motors cars and the two likeable lads accelerated away to a terrific 26 points on the front nine before they hit the brakes hard on the back nine coming home with 19 points. Well played chaps great golf!

Thanks to everyone for your terrific support once again today. Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at very beautiful Vale Royal

Vale Royal was in absolutely immaculate condition for today’s Maxitours event. This golf course just gets better and better.

‘Those greens are awesome!’ Declared Paul Sherlock

‘That was in superb condition- the greenkeeper deserves a big pat on the back.’ Gushed Lee Jevons

Thanks to highly respected General Manager Ian Embury and all his brilliant staff, especially the new professional Ben Derbyshire for being so helpful and Holly the attractive barmaid for being so attractive.

The majestic trees which are generously scattered around the stunning Abbey grounds were just turning and there were some lovely Autumnal colours on display. When Mark Green hit the large beech tree on the 11th after yet another a vicious hook he was delighted to see the lovely golden leaves which fluttered to the ground ‘They are a much more delicate shade of red than that big oak tree I hit on the 9th’ observed the nature loving Mancunian.

Knutsford Golf Club Honorary Secretary and all round nice guy John Horsley checked in and announced he was playing alongside three Daves-Harlow, Kelly and Wilkinson. ‘I’ll be getting fed up of saying good shot Dave!’ he chuckled optimistically before he went out. Unfortunately after his team picked up just 71 points I asked him what his most popular on course comment actually was. ‘Think you should play a provisional Dave’ ‘Nice three putt Dave’ and ‘Was that a seven or an eight Dave’ were among his leading contenders .

I also felt sorry for Steve Merricks from Bramall who was hobbling even as he left the Clubhouse on his way to the first tee. ‘Its an old netball injury’ his playing partners mercilessly informed me.

Adrenaline junkie Les Penson’s hobby is flying micro light aircraft and over the past twelve months he has kindly invited me to join him on a couple of flights, unfortunately I have been washing my hair on both occasions. Today he ran out of fuel, lost his sense of direction and crashed on the back nine.

In todays event the slick greens and tough pin positions meant that once again that leading scores were less than perhaps expected.
Simon Pouchers team were out in a best of the day 45 points however the back nine took its toll and just one point on the short 16th meant they had to settle for 5th place with 82 points.

Thanks to some terrific return putting Lee Jevons’ (6)Ellesmere Golf Club team were the only four ball in the field not to drop a shot all day, Mike Emerson(3) Wayne Cheadle(4) and Dave Bennett (11) completed the fourth placed quartet.

Third place also on 82 points was the Bramhall team of Les Russon(11), Rob Kenyon(14) Ken Clarke and Steve Merricks(7). They collected 7 points on the final hole to get their best result of the year. Rob Kenyon tells me that his job is supplying nurses uniforms and this time of year he is busy making sure they are a snug fit so things just get better and better for the likeable Bramall
man.

Second place went to Sandiways Gary Neiles(5) team who were last out. He teamed up with Alan Forber(11), John Longworth(13) and John Moreton(12) to score 84 but they missed out on victory due to a slightly worse last 6 holes.

The jovial Accrington team was led by Lancashire legend Trevor Foster(+1), Head greenkeeper Jack Smith(14), Dale Beaghan(11) and Mark Patton(9). Last week a poor back nine saw Trevor throw away the chance to win at Clitheroe but class is permanent and his closing birdie sealed a first victory of the season for the Maxitours regulars. Well played chaps!

Thanks to everyone for your support, yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at very tight Tytherington

The sun was once again shining on the Maxitours competitors who travelled to the Tytherington Golf Club in Macclesfield for the latest Summer event.

The terrific course is rated by many top players as the best layout in Cheshire, some recent improvement work to the bunkers meant the course wasn’t quite at its best but all players enjoyed the day.

Many thanks to everyone for your excellent pace of play each week. The first group was around in just less than 4 hours today which is great. One Maxitours player reported that a slow playing member at his home Club is known as ‘the glacier’ -you know there is some movement but you just can’t see it happening .

Roy Ainsworth is not available for the next couple of months as he is going into hospital. ‘He’s having a swing replacement’ joked his pal Brian Ankers. All the best with the new hip Roy you are a top bloke.

The course was playing long after recent heavy downfalls and the breezy conditions made scoring tough.I am heading to Scotland tonight so sorry but the report is slightly shorter than usual:

North Manchester’s John Farrell(9), scruffy Mick McCurdy(8) Alan Burton(9) Terry Mod(12) were delighted with 78 points to finish in 3rd.
Heswall’s Jim Rymer(18) Phil Myers(5) John Dickenson(18) Paul Lord(4) took second with 80 points and
Hindley Hall’s Ray Ward(15) Gary Garner (5) Jordan Garner (4) Tom Milner(11) took top spot with a great score of 82 points- congratulations!
