Results from remarkably good Romiley

Maxitours overseas trip filling quickly – two teams sold this week! Don’t but stuck in the damp this January.

Maxitours at remarkably good Romiley.

Romiley was highly praised by so many players today who were surprised and delighted by the quality of this historic Cheshire course. Romiley has hosted all the major Cheshire championships and it is getting right back to the top of the Cheshire map where it firmly belongs.

Terrific scenery and a mixture of short strategic and long testing holes make for a superb challenge.

‘What a lovely track!’ Declared Ringways Steve Perrett.

‘I never knew what a great course this is. It was millionaires golf out there in the sunshine!’ Declared sun tanned millionaire Steve Francis.

Rachel is the Club secretary and was fantastic to deal with and is also a lovely person. She is really on top of her game. Today there were signs welcoming my players and special maxitours food menus- brilliant work Rachel.

I used to coach the Romiley pro Graham Drabble when he was a junior and its great to see him doing such a professional job and building a very healthy reputation. He was busy teaching his juniors throughout the day and his knowledge of the golf swing is now incredible. It has taken a awhile luckily he has managed to forget everything I taught him.

With the overnight rain the pro said the greens were fast and would be receptive to a well struck approach shot. Bob Sutton was a little bit concerned that he would struggle to keep his ball on the greens with the extra backspin he would generate but the skilful 28 handicapper adapted well.

We had a plus 3.6 handicapper playing today in the form of Sean Dobson who made eagle after hitting a 54 degree wedge for his 2nd shot into the par 5 tenth and in the group immediately after him there was a plus 2.4 Frazer McCload who recently shot ten under at Stockport with a double bogey ion his card. Both featured in the top ten.

The Knutsford team of Nigel Eckersley, Graham Pike, Nigel Davenport and Jeremy Lawton took a shock lead with 83 points midway through the day. This was the equivalent to the Jamaican bob sleigh team winner Gold at the Winter Olympics – in fact it was that much of a shock it was the equivalent of the Jamaican bob sleigh team winning golf in the Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, a few good scores late in the day prevented them getting a podium finish.

Stockport’s Frazer Macload, Andrew Hill, Scott Taylor and Romiley Junior Jack Walker took 3rd with 85 points

Tytheringtons Paul Calnan, Chris Jackson, Howard Kelley and Malcolm Kendrick scored 85 to take 2nd place on the card play off but it was Sale’s Neil Griffiths(11), Toby Ainsworth (5), Moby Rawthore (2) and positive Tony Stiles (10) who took the honours with 86 points. A birdie at the last from young Toby will last in his memory forever. Class.

Thanks to everyone for your support today. Romiley has been booked for next year and will fill quickly!

Lovely Lymm Results

Limited spaces at Romiley Golf Club next week Tues 6th Aug – another cracking course!

Maxitours at lovely Lymm

Lymm is becoming a firm favourite with Maxitours players. The hospitality is first class and the course is a brilliant layout. A firm fast running front nine and a more challenging parkland back nine provided a stiff test for everyone.

Martin Williams is a regular Maxitours player and a member at Lymm he was out early this morning brushing the steps around the tees to get the course in even better shape for us today. Thanks to everyone at Lymm for their efforts. What a club!

Matt Turnock (England golf coach of the year 2019) ran the first half of the day for me whilst I visited the rough at Ganton Golf Club in a pro am, so the report is shorter than usual as I am behind on things!

Scoring was excellent as most par 5’s were in range for the bigger hitters and there were a few drivable risk and reward par 4’s which also boosts the scoring.
Neale Laurent and Jim Caldwells team set the early pace with 87 points matched by Steve Austins team late in the day.
Simon Raine continued his good form with 88 points but this was pipped on the back nine by Mark Foley, Karl Marginson, Noel Holoham and Colin Tichias.
Winning was Austin McBride(3) Steve Best (4) Chris Massey (2) and Geoff Bickerton (5) . All these guys love their golf and have represented the Cheshire seniors in the past year. They had 13 birdies and an eagle between them. Austin was class but Chris Massey was the main man recording 5 birdies and an eagle. – Excellent.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance and unrivalled etiquette today.

Results from brilliant Bromborough

Maxitours at brilliant Bromborough

Bromborough was in super condition for todays Maxitours event. This is a terrific course in the heart of the Wirral peninsula and last week it hosted the Cheshire seniors championship. The course was prepared to the same very high standard today.

Sian is the lovely lady who sells the best meat pies in Cheshire at the Half way house. Sales were excellent throughout the day despite Graham Jackson not playing and she loves our Maxitours players. ‘Your guys are brilliant.’ Thanks everyone – your amazing support of the host clubs really help.

Kevin Harts team was one short so they drafted in Dave Cooper from my reserve list. After nine holes the new relationship was blooming. They were exchanging phone numbers, addresses, photographs and very nearly bodily fluids after a best of the day 48 points. The back nine saw them return in a worst of the day 31 points. After play Cooper was once again sat on his own drinking a coffee in the corner of the clubhouse bar. ‘I thought we had it all’ mumbled the Welshman nibbling on his Biscoff.

Lewis Marland has been playing Maxitours since I started running my events seventeen years ago. As well as the immense health and social benefits associated with my events he has also won enough bag towels to make a small quilt. He is playing some of the best golf of his life at the moment and was delighted with 3rd place today. Phil Dickens, Neil Evans and Steve Blakeway completed the team.

Second place went to the Heyrose team of Phil McCurry(16), Tony Leigh(11), John Cross(17) and lovable Scotsman George Kerr (2). Like 95% of teams today their front nine was far better than the tougher back nine.

Eighty five year old Dave Alcock(15) looks younger every day and he became the oldest Maxitours winner of the season as his Hopwood team scored an impressive 89 points. Alcock rolled back the years holing his 120 yard approach shot on the tough 11th hole to give his team a massive boost. Playing partner Graham Davenport(11) looks eighty five but I am told he is only about 60, he showed his class with a fighting par on one of the toughest closing holes in Cheshire which secured an historic victory. Hopwood ex Captain Steve Heywood (7) and Mellors Chris Lee(10) both played well and completed the victorious quartet.

Maxitours at Helsby

Helsby was in excellent condition for todays Maxitours event. This traditional Cheshire course is always a pleasure to play and enjoyed by all. The Club is incredibly friendly, Rob behind the bar and Julie the hard working Caterer have done a really great job here for many years.

The Helsby event is always on the same date as first day of the Open and its great to watch at the same time as running my event
‘How the heck can McIlroy shoot 7 over par? It’s a joke!’ declared Steve Wade.
‘How did you play today Steve?’ I was hopeless. He replied.

The Hale team had the best final two holes of any team in the field picking up 11 Points on two of the toughest holes that Cheshire has to offer. At the last Chris Brown won nearest the pin and coolly rolled in his birdie. Unfortunately, they finished in last pace as their previous 16 holes were utterly diabolical.
Anthony Bloor is a great bloke and the 22 handicapper was delighted as he enjoyed his pint in the clubhouse ‘I made a great par at the last’ He told me sipping his beer contentedly.
A bit later he said ‘Wow those two guys have driven the green on the 18th !’ They have got easy birdies. I didn’t want to spoil his pint but I had to let him know that the last is a par three. He was devastated and looked a bit like Gazza when he realised he was going to miss the world cup final and tried his hardest to hold back the tears.
Scoring was incredibly tight with the best scores coming in the morning. Of the first 13 cards of the day 5 teams scored 82 points! And this was the winning score – Nathan Mills Saddleworth team with Stu Muller, James Mooney and Tom Williams were the 6th team to score 82 late in the day. This ended up in 3rd after the card play off.
Neale Laurents Duckenfield team took 2nd place with 41 on the back nine but it was the popular Antrobus steward Dave Buckley (16) playing with Paul Jones(4) Dave Carter (6) and Pete Johnson(13) who were delighted to win with 42 points on their closing nine holes. Well payed guys!

Thanks to everyone for your unrivalled integrity each week.

Maxitours at Magical Hopwood

Spaces at Helsby next Thursday-a traditional Cheshire gem.

Maxitours at magical Hopwood

Manchester Hopwood Golf Club was awesome today.

Perfect golfing conditions -twenty degrees heat, gentle breeze, receptive pure greens and firm fairways meant scoring was excellent.

There were so many positive comments from my players it was incredible. I love my golf and was itching to get out there rather than having to be nice to people all day. Thanks to new green keeper Johnny who is right up therewith the best in the business.

Every single team in the field had a better front nine than back nine! In fact after studying the cards the front nine scores were on average 7 shots better than the tough back nine (43 to 34).

Scoring was incredibly tight at the top. In fact I think this is the closest scoring event in Maxitours history. Four teams tied for 5th place on 87 points and 4 teams tied for 1st with 88 points.

The Heyrose quartet had the biggest fall from grace after they went out in a best of the day 50 points before coming home in 37 to miss out by a single shot. They were still smiling though.

Simon Raines elderly team continued beating the odds as they scored 88 points, pipped on the closing three holes by Mick Mahon, Richard Palmer, Andy Faulkner and John Farnsworth. Seventy year old Farnsworth was considering retiring from golf to concentrate on his drinking and smoking but he was on fire today coming in with six three point hauls. John is the Georgie Best of Maxitours and the 26 handicapper has too much talent to retire so young.

Last years Hopwood Captain and Lady Captain Janet and Steve Heywood played today alongside Chris Lee and Graham Davenport they had a solid score but nothing special coming down the last. Single figure player Janet decided to hole her rescue club for 5 points and likeable Graham rolled in a par putt as the team collected 8 points to win on a better back nine!

Never give up.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance. Thanks for your class and support.

Yours in Golf,

Tim
