Maxitours at lovely Lancaster

Lancaster was the latest five-star setting to host a Maxitours event. The practice ground is terrific, the chipping and putting green are awesome and the course is wonderful. In addition they have a castle as a clubhouse. Add to all that a friendly membership and a Captain who made the effort to come down to wish us well and you can see why Lancaster Golf Club is now recognised as one of Lancashires finest. There is nothing to fault about this venue.

‘Absolutely brillianto course!’ announced Mario Capastano.
‘Wonderful!’ Declared Simon Poucher.

Simon Taylor is a great guy who has only recently joined Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. I’m not sure how they let him in because I thought you had to be a competent golfer to be put on the waiting list.
After a paltry 33 points on the front nine his team were surprised to score 7 points on the tough 12th hole. Normal service was resumed on the short 13th. The easiest hole on the course was playing just 129 yards and players were ripping it up. Taylors’ fourball ended up within three feet of each other in the same little bunker to the left of the green. Only three managed to get out and only one managed to two putt as they walked off with a deflating single point. ‘We still enjoyed it’ Added Simon.

Barrie Simpson was pulling his hair out as teammate Rick Shaw played the wrong ball to earn his team a two shot penalty and then if that wasn’t bad enough another team member -friendly Dutch man Koos Alders -played the wrong ball three holes later. They narrowly missed out on the prizes.

The Davyhulme team led by John Cox(18) Peter Ellis (13) Brian Johnson(17) and Andrew Cox took 4th place with 82 points, Carden Park’s Nigel Ashtons team finished in 3rd also on the same score but with a stronger finish.
Wealthy and young Retired coppers Neale Laurent(13) and Martin Schofield (3) teamed up with Darren Burgess(8) and Gareth Winstone (11) to take 2nd place in an excellent team effort.

RAF Tornado fighter plane navigator Dave Sully showed his fearless side as he rolled in six birdies to earn his team a first victory in over three years. Sully is famous for carrying around a 1980s bum bag and nobody knows for sure what is in it. He normally plays like a bum but today he was sheer class. Even his wife Donna (15) was impressed and not to be outdone she played the last three holes one under par herself! Steve Heywood(6) and Richard Wakefield (15) watched on in awe.

Well played team- great golf!
Thanks to everyone for your support, brilliant. Tim

Maxitours at delightful Davenport

Another stunning Summers day greeted well over 100 Maxitours competitors at Davenport Golf Club. This picturesque course is a firm favourite and always attracts a large field who enjoy the stunning views, excellent greens and well presented fairways.
The Clubhouse and facilities are superb and Fraser the bar manager is the best in the business.

‘This is my favourite course!’ Said well-travelled Steve Parle ‘It isn’t easy but it rewards good golf shots ‘
Thanks to everyone at this Club for making us feel so welcome. My Dad used to teach Davenport Captain Mick Murphy (he claims my Dad gave him a clip around the era) and it was great to have a chat with the class Club skipper who wished us well today. Thank you.

Dave Antrobus went into panic mode this morning after he was stuck in traffic. He was in no danger of missing his tee time, he was just terrified that he wouldn’t have time to eat all his full English breakfast. He made several calls to playing partners, catering staff and a variety of golf professionals so that his food would be ready for him on arrival.

I don’t think Mike Lowe got any birthday cards when he was a boy. He always has a good root through the pile and looks at everybody’s scorecards when he finishes his round.
‘I love looking at cards’ he told me today.

In today’s event Brian Greenbank played great golf but talked me hole by hole through his level par round. I am getting better at feigning interest so I am getting a little afraid that he might bring his holiday photos to show me next week. Unfortunately, the rest of his Hale team were less than average so they just missed out on the prizes with 81 points.

French Bistro owner Olivier Troalens team finished with an incredible eight points on their final hole to help the Lymm men sneak into 6th place.

Carden Park’s Colin Bryan(9), Paul Fell(5), Mike Lowe(9) and Nigel Ashton(12) finished in 4th place with 83 points and
Ashton in Makerfields Neil Edwards(7), Matty Holland(14), Jimmy Shirley(13) and Jeff Ratcliffe(7) took 3rd with 84 points. They had a best of the day 44 points on the tough front nine.

Dukinfields well-liked Neale Laurent(13), Jack Schofield(10), Paul McDermott(15) and Mark Turner(11) finished strongly to take 2nd on the card play off also with an excellent 84 points.

Taking 1st prize was the Jim Caldwells(11) Wilmslow senior team of Bob Picthall(14), Jon Hume(14) and Alderley Edge legend Stuart Hall(16). It was a great team effort but Jons 4 point birdie on the 17th hole was crucial to their success. Very well played chaps!

Thanks to everyone for your support and 100% attendance today – terrific.
Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at Brilliant Hazel Grove

Maxitours at Hazel Grove

I arrived early at Hazel Grove and asked their incredibly well-liked Club professional James Rowlands about the condition of the course.
‘Its mustard mate, its mega, its mega mustard.’ Indeed it was.
There were umpteen Maxitours players raving about the condition of this great course after their round:
‘That was superb!’ Reported wealthy John Hilditch.
‘ What a great course.’ Announced scruffy Pete Cotton.
‘ I’ve been playing here for many. many years but that is best it’s ever been’ Declared intelligent Dr James Shipstone.

Thanks to Martin Swindells and his catering staff for their excellent hospitality- I had a cheese and onion toastie at 11am and went back to back with another at 4pm.
Club Captain Simon Ashton is a great man and his friendly persona is mirrored by all the lovely members who were so warm throughout the day to all our players. Brilliant.

It was yet another early start for me to get to the course at 9am to do my course preparation and registration set up. I overtook Knutsford slow driving champion Stuart Blake and his pal Bob ‘Stena’ Sutton (he always needs a lift off his mates to the golf club) on the new bypass which really improves travel time. A local told me that it is now just 12 minutes from Hazel Grove to Manchester airport. Not if you are stuck behind Stuart Blake.
.
Richard Williamson also stopped the Hazel Grove traffic as he had to hit his second shot off the road on the first hole after an embarrassingly bad 35 yard bobbling tee shot.

Senior Colin Roberts knows an attractive woman when he sees one and he wouldn’t stop talking about how friendly the half way house ladies were. ‘Can you thank those stunning Hazel Grove lady members for their voluntary efforts today- they were brilliant. I think one took a shine to me.’
‘Yeah right, What are you doing tonight Colin?’
‘I’m settling down to watch the Norwegian ladies football team – I can’t wait. Then it’s love island.’ Replied the amorous seventy year old.

Jim Clarke and Pete Hamletts teams showed their class and integrity after disqualifying themselves after realising they were playing off the wrong tees. You are todays winners in my eyes.

The greens were perhaps the best we have played all year and with them running at 11 on the stimp meter they were really tough to putt on. Today was I think possibly the worst scoring in Maxitours history with nearly half the teams failing to break par.

I teamed Ben Davies and his partner up with Tony Adams and his partner as they were both two players short last night. The newly formed quartet managed just 67 points. Ben Whispered to me that they were lovely guys but can I get them two better players next week. Three minutes later Tony came in ‘those lads you teamed us up with were great company but they weren’t the best -can you get us two decent players next time…’

Steve Foxcroft, Trevor Webb, Tony Andrews and Rob Weston are possibly the most unsuccessful four ball in maxitours history. Last year they were that bad at Hazel Grove I gave them a cap each just to cheer them up. Today they were delighted with their first top half finish for over 5 years ‘I can’t wait for the results to come through!’ Admitted on form Foxy.

Jim Caldwells(12) Wilmslow team were leading for most of the day after an impressive 83 points in the perfect early morning conditions. Liam Pilkington(11), Peter Griggs(15) and Russell Cash (6) completed the experienced team.

John Dickenson(20), his son Craig (9), Paul Lord (5) and Lyndon Stott (11) challenged them briefly with a solid 77 points and finished in 3rd spot.

Late in the day home advantage came into play as Cheshire golfing legend Andy Hill (1) Mike(19) and Dave(9) Stewardson and Cockney Joe Shelley(9) scraped 84 points to earn their first ever victory. They scored seven points on the seventeenth hole to make all the difference. Well played chaps!
Thanks to everyone for your support today.

Maxitours at Fixby

Fixby golf club was in exceptional condition for today’s Maxitours event.
The greens were ‘Rapid’ and the fairways were like carpets as our players enjoyed this stunning championship venue.

‘That was the hardest round of golf I have ever played. I think it was a combination of lightning fast greens, tough pin positions, breezy conditions and a general lack of talent.’ Admitted Richard Palmer.
‘What a course – that was superb!’ Declared knowledgeable Phil Smeathers.
‘That’s a proper test of golf – amazing.’ Announced Gordon Warke.

The food menu and service provided by the caterers at Huddersfield is also right up there with the very best venues we visit all year- thank you!

The day started well for Andy Oakes who had a big smile on his face as he enjoyed a famous ‘Full Fixby breakfast’ but things rapidly went downhill for the likeable Prestbury man who played like a sausage as his team could only manage 62 points.

Tomorrow is the Longest day of the year but it felt like today was even longer for me after I asked Frank Lyons if he was on form. Fifteen minutes later and he was still in full flow talking me through his most recent five rounds of golf.

It is great to see ladies playing on Maxitours and they are always very welcome. Christine Clarkson played today and she passed her friend Janet Heywood what looked like a golf tuition book. I asked for a closer look and discovered that it was entitled: ‘How to knit your own golf headcover’. Say no more.
Brian Hopkins (5) Majid Benyounis (22) Darren Whittaker(14) and Anthony Grimley(13) were out early n the day and they thought 77 points would earn them a mid-table finish – they will be delighted to learn that they finished in 3rdplace.

Classy Sarah Ormrod (16) Dave Greenwood(11) John Delaney(5) and Paul Smith(15) finished in 2nd place. They had a tremendous back nine of 43 points after a very average 36 points on the front nine.
Ashton in Makerfield good guys Ste Woods(21), Paul Woods(6), Jimmy McEwan(7) and Chris Bland(13) took first place. They picked up five shots on the tough par three holes when everyone else in the field were throwing them away like confetti. A great birdie from Jimmy on the last sealed an excellent team performance.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance once again.

Yours in golf and friendship,

Tim
