Maxitours at Cool but classy Cavendish

What a golf course this is!

We are blessed to have Cavendish Golf Club on our doorstep with its quality and unrivalled history but the tough conditions saw this course get the better of most of my players today.

Pete Newey is very positive. ‘I don’t like it when it is too hot. It was quite pleasant in the cold rain today and when it stopped raining the breeze turned into a slight gale to dry me off.’ That’s the spirit Pete you could start writing the report for me.

Paul Simpson is another positive man who is good to be around when the going gets tough.
‘I loved it out there. What a great design by Alastair Mackenzie – he really knew what he was doing. I enjoyed every minute and couldn’t stop smiling all day.’

Cavendish has a young professional called George Bloor and he has just qualified to play in the Open at Portrush. Half of Cavendish Golf Club is currently over in Ireland supporting him.
What an achievement – his Dad is at the Club a lot and must be a very proud man! Everyone speaks highly of George. Incredibly he is playing a practice round with Scottie Scheffler today. We’ve all been in golf’s gutters at times but stories like this keep our dreams alive. Good luck George.

Bob Kelsall plays most weeks and I thought I knew him well. He looks like quite an ordinary bloke to me but today I discovered that he used to be a professional cricketer for Notts. He once scored 132 and took 8 wickets in a day. He played alongside the great Gary Sobers and was good mates with him. Very impressive Bob!

Peter Maher loves his golf and he was a decent ballroom dancer in his younger days. He has had a great golfing season this year and puts it down to his new mindset after reading a few psychology books.
‘I didn’t worry about my feet when I was dancing, I just listened to the music.’ He educated me.
‘Now I don’t think about my swing I just do a little dance and let the ball fly to the target.’
Love it Pete!

Paul Woods told me that if I wanted any ammunition for my report his playing partner Barry Bateman was in the ‘Railway Children’ when he was a lot younger. I spent half an hour researching Jenny Agutter etc. When I interviewed Barry after his round for more information he wasn’t even born when The Railway children was filmed. He was in the pop group called ‘The Railway Children’ -their biggest song peaked at 26 in the pop charts.

In todays event Andie Frazer(14) Colin Roberts(20), Steve Jones(11) and Andy Williamson played their front nine this morning in the dry and posted a stunning 84 points. The team had an outward 44 points and were hanging in there over the closing holes. This was always going to be tough to beat and so it proved.

Steve Austin, Richard Blackwell, John Hilton and Gary Smith played in the worst of the mid-afternoon weather and had an incredible 82 points to take a much-deserved 2nd place.

Third place went to Wychwood good guys Paul Price, Matt Cheffins, Ian Snape and Pete Keena who battled their way to 78 points.

Paul Browns vastly improving Sale team took 4th with 77 points.

Thanks to everyone for showing your class and turning up. What a group we have. Only 2 cancellations despite the dodgy forecast. Brilliant.

Maxitours February trip full- ROOM IN THE FANTASTIC JANUARY EVENT

Room still available on the January trip to amazing Quinta do Lago – possibly the best resort in Europe. Great golf, friendship and competition.

Maxitours at lovely Lancaster

Lancaster Golf and country club was magnificent today. The golf course was a stunning lime green colour as the drought that has hit the rest of the UK has missed this little oasis.

The putting surfaces and fairways were immaculate and the clubhouse and surrounding huge trees and gardens are wonderful.

The Maxitours competitors who travelled were rewarded with one of the best golfing days of the year.

The temperature was 5 degrees or so cooler than the Manchester area as the cool sea breeze and elevated course gave some welcome relief.

It was great to see Clarion Wealth owner Keith Thompson playing today and his Hale team had a very respectable mid table finish. Thanks for all you do for my tour Keith.

Bob Clarkes wife isn’t daft. Carolyn came to Lancaster to watch her partner play golf. They also have a static camper van parked up nearby. It was soon a toss-up between watching Alcaraz’s legs or Bob’s slice. She quietly disappeared to the van and had a much more enjoyable afternoon chomping on an ice cream and watching the tennis.

The journey to Lancaster took just over an hour from Knutsford. I don’t know where Kevin Moore thought Lancaster was but he turned up 3 hours before his tee time.

‘My timing is all wrong.’ he admitted. Likeable Kevins’ timing didn’t improve on the course and the team finished with 66 points.

Scoring was low as the Maxitours players unrivalled integrity was once again on full display.

Recording their first ever win with 81 points was the Tytherington team of Steve Dow(10), Andrew Adshead(11), Steve Webb(6) and Nick Coleman(9). Adshead was a young man when he started playing in my events nearly 20 years ago and he can now finally sleep easily after getting the huge monkey off his back. Two solid pars on Lancasters famous closing par three secured a one shot win.

Second place went to Hopwoods Steve and Janet Heywood playing alongside Chris Lee and Graham Davenport. They came home in 42 points to charge through the field. Jim Caldwells Wilmslows team was 3rd and Sandiways Gary Neiles was 4th.

It was good to see Salfords Kev Hart back in the prizes in 5th place.

What a day. Thanks for playing.

Spaces at Lancaster Golf Club next Friday – Don’t miss this one! Room for 1,2 or 4 players.

Maxitours at marvellous Manchester Golf Club

Manchester golf club was in superb condition for today’s Maxitours event. The recent rain has helped all courses but Hopwood really was exceptional. Thanks to respected head greenkeeper Jonny and his high quality team.

Steve Proctor and his catering team also looked after us incredibly well.

Martin Mellor had a cataract done recently. He told me that before the operation when he played he:

‘ Literally had no idea where the ball had gone – I knew it was in the woods of course but I was never sure if it was a wild slice or an uncontrollable hook.’

‘I only had one eye done so I should be 50% better than I used to be.’ After his round he wanted a cataract reversal as he decided that he plays better when he doesn’t know where he is going.

It’s been a great summer so far with plenty of sunshine but you would never guess it looking at Dave Goodwin’s legs. For some reason they are getting whiter by the week. When he plays in the evening he has started attracting a few moths which are drawn to the brightness.

Andy Parringtons golfing nickname is Viagra because he can’t stop his handicap from rising. The likeable Withington man hit some form today though and made an impressive eagle on the second hole as his team finished with a solid 82 points.

The three leading scores for most of the day all teed off in the first few groups. Dave Goodwin, Phil Robinson, Richard Williamson and Alex Smith set the early pace with 86 points.

Mick Mahon(19), Andy Faulkner(10), Richard Palmer(7) and Nigel Smith(12) then bettered them with 87 points. Mick Mahon was unrecognisable on and off the course. He had a smart new haircut which has knocked years off him and then played like a tour pro during his round. Keep it up Mick.

Paul Fells(6) team have found some decent form latterly after a year in the doldrums and will be delighted to find out that their 87 points was good enough for fourth. Nigel Ashton(13), Colin Bryan(7) and Mike Lowe(10) all contributed well but Fellys excellent birdie on the tough 15th was crucial. Well played gentlemen.

Late in the day both the wind and oppressive temperatures dropped and a few good scores came in.

Sale’s Simon Poucher(8), Dave Carlile(12), Paul Browne(5) and Brendan Leighton(14) returned a superb 88 after 49 points on the front nine. Their best performance for a while saw the quartet laughing and joking over a few refreshing beers after play.

Tytheringtons Dave More’o’Farrell(8). Andy Adshead(8) Gary Leyland (6) and Paul Calnan(14) also had a solid 88 points. Calnans birdie on the 16th was the only birdie of the day as they picked up valuable points on a hole where everyone was dropping like flies.

Winning was Dave Griffiths(14), Chris Bracchi(9), Paul McCallum(7) and Mark Burton(9) with 88 points. Another team with poor form for many years but now playing with flare and confidence! Excellent.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support. Amazing.

results from the Clarion Masters at Vale Royal

Room at Hopwood on Monday 30th June and Lancaster the following Friday – 11th July 2 top venues!

Maxitours at Magnificent Vale royal.

Vale Royal was magnificent again today. This beautiful venue is a pleasure to play, the greens were cut and ironed for us and recent rain saw the green lush course presented immaculately. Thanks to all the green staff for their superb efforts.

Things were back to normal for Chris Lee and Graham Davenport this week. They played with their wives in the Maxitours Wales event last week and were on their best behaviour eating salad and being polite with each other. They were back on the buttered crispy bacon baps and ripping each other to shreds today. They looked very happy.

It was great to see Great Britain Olympic cyclist Rob Hayles playing with the Clarion Sponsors team- he still looked as fit as a fiddle. On the other end of the sporting spectrum was Stuart Hibbert – Maxitours worst ever golfer. I really thought we had seen the last of him through injury but he was back again inflicting more pain and frustration on his team mates and driving one of the most decrepit single seater buggies I have ever seen. He actually contributed a couple of times to everyone’s amazement.

In todays event the perfcet conditions saw some good scoring.

With an impressive score of ninety points was the retired Paul Robinsons Heyrose team of Tom Faulkner, Peter Taylor and Phil McCurry.

Robinson and McCurry are retired and feeling old on the last tee. They told their partners that the young guns were needed to perform on the last. Unfortunately, they both went out of bounds so left it to the oldies to secure a solid six points.

Winning today with 91 points were Saddleworths Dave Rhodes, Dave Sarsfield, Lee Tilley and Ian Hogg. They collected 8 points with two birdies in a dramatic ‘Keegan Bradley like’ finish on the closing hole. Well played guys. I am sure everyone had a great day.

Thanks for your support,

Tim.
