Maxitours at Bolton Old Links

Perfect golfing conditions once again greeted my Maxitours competitors. What a Spring we are having.

The greens at Bolton are the best we have played on all year. Outstanding. Despite freezing underground temperatures they are watered twice each night and the surfaces are excellent. Well done to head green keeper Phil and his team. The Bolton Old links greens were average for years and then ten years ago they turned things around. Amazing.

There is a great team at Bolton. Pro Sean Owen is a class act and stocks Hugo Boss and JL Lindeburg in his shop, Liz is a great Clubhouse manager and brings a real buzz to the place. Thanks guys.

Play is always quick at Bolton as there is not much rough and the course flows well. In fact the only thing that slows play a little is the smooth, slick greens which Maxitours players regularly enjoy three putting. They are scary.

I disappeared for 2 hours and went to Maxitours player and lovely man – John Dickensons funeral today. He would’ve loved to be out on the course. Play with a smile on your face and make the most of your time on the golf course guys. Every day is precious.

Richard Williamson entered the Clubhouse with a big smile on his face. Not only had he played well but he had a had two pints in the bar next to the Bolton 18th green. The bar was put there during Covid and is now a firm favourite with players. The pints were flowing today.

Peter Maher loved it out there and enjoyed the firm fast running fairways.
‘I always wondered why it was called Bolton Old Links but it was like playing a links course out there today.’ Observed the likeable Bramhall man. There were only 4 two’s on the course today and Maher holed his approach on the 8th to win his share of the balls. Excellent.

Scoring was tough with housewife superstars Dave Goodwin, Richard Williamson, Paul Woodbine and Alex Smith setting the pace with 82 points.

The Hazel Grove team of Darren Wilkinson, Melanie Blades, Kalin Shokraee and Mike Charlton recorded an excellent 83 points for second place. They narrowly pipped the Ringway quartet of Peter Jewitt, Tony Goldsmith, Charles Keirl and David Fussell on a card play off.

Winning the Bolton Old links event with a super 86 points were ever present lovely guys Neil Evans, Phil Dickens, Lewis Marland and Dave Greenwood. Lewis was on fire and he birdied the 14th and 16th in a really hot spell. Well played chaps.
It is superb to see such a low score winning an open event. Maxitours players integrity is admired throughout the golf industry, Thank you so much.

Yours in golf and friendship,
Tim

Maxitours at incredible Vale royal

Whilst green keepers throughout Cheshire are scratching their heads trying to make their grass grow the Vale Royal greens were in absolutely superb condition for todays’ Maxitours event. The greens have been watered heavily overnight and were holding a well struck shot first thing this morning. Excellent work from Justin and his hard-working team. The attention to detail throughout the course was stunning.

Ian Embury also runs a tight ship and the clubhouse food and furnishings are right up there with the very best.

A very impressive venue.

Bob Kelsall checked in this morning wearing a bright green shirt, I then saw him on the putting green wearing an orange shirt.
‘I’m sure you were wearing a green shirt earlier?’ I asked.
‘I was – that’s my driving shirt, this is my golf shirt.’
I still have no idea what he was talking about but it didn’t stop the likeable Bramhall Park man making a two on both the par 3 sixth hole and a two on the par 4 eighth hole. Bob may buy himself a new shirt to celebrate.

Rob Platt was well out of his comfort zone when he impressively eagled the first and birdied his second. Wonderful. After hyperventilating on the 3rd tee he told me that he was soon back to his usual rubbish.

Mike Upton recently sold his successful Dog kennel business. He didn’t make little wooden ones like you see on Tom and Jerry cartoons but instead he supplied multi million pound ones to the military and police around the world. His Wychwood team were well and truly in the dog house after finishing near the bottom with just 77 points.

Early this morning the soft greens and perfectly still conditions meant the course was there for the taking. Even Knutsford’s John Atkin, Graham Pike, Mike Baker and Trevor Webb scored in the eighties. Excellent.

As the day wore on Vale Royal started playing like a fiery coastal links course. The fairways must have been firm because new Grandparent Mark Foley reached the par five last in two shots.

Ian King and his Bramhall team of Andrew Hagen, Kev Cunliffe and Neil Ashton were out second today. They were delighted to score 89 points. Hagen and Cunliffe both birdied the 13th to pick up eight points and two birdies at the last from King and Ashton really helped the scorecard.

Winning today after a barren twelve months were Maxitours regulars Colin Roberts, Dave Marchant, Dave Mason and Nigel Armitage. Out in a solid 42 points they caught fire on the back nine to return in 48 points to clinch victory by a single shot. Lovable Roberts parred the 10th and 11th to set the ball really rolling. Well played guys, good to see you back in the winners circle.

Maxitours at lovely and sunny Llangollen

Another cracking Spring day greeted Maxitours competitors in deepest North Wales this morning. The fairway lining trees were decorated with fresh green leaves and Spring lambs were frolicking on the mountainsides. This place is idyllic.

Everyone arrives nice and early at Llangollen as the journey here only takes just over an hour from Manchester. People tend to allow nearer two hours so there is plenty of time to get some breakfast. The old Caterers at Llangollen are back in town -Phil and Gaynor were here when I first came 17 years ago and they have returned by popular demand. They are the best. The bacon baps are served on locally sourced bread at the ridiculously cheap price of £4 a butty- far too cheap but taste great.

Forty nine year old Martin Humphries felt like a Spring Chicken today. His three playing partners had an average age of 80. The team had a solid round before old age caught up with them and they dropped 4 shots in the closing two holes.

Stuart Blake was first out this morning and he hit a great shot into the 18th hole to be nearest the pin. This was leading all day until the very last shot of the day. I was waiting to pick the marker up when Steve Heywood ripped a 7 iron to within three feet. Unlucky Stuart.

In todays event scoring was close with three teams sharing 4th with 80 points.
Peter Maher is getting back to his best and he led his Bramall Park team into 3rd spot with 81 points. Excellent scoring on a tough golf course. Attractive Fiona Kelsall and less attractive Bob Kelsall and even less attractive Nigel Hall supported him well.
Lymm’s lovable quartet of Sam Leach, Jonny Barton, Chris Whalley and John Mather had an impressive 82 points to take 2nd.

Winning today was Jim Caldwell, Steve Perrett, John Roome and Dan McIntyre. Second match out making the most of the perfectly still conditions and receptive greens they posted an impressive 84 points. A wonderful birdie on the last from Dan secured the win. Well played everyone.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Wales.

Maxitours at fabulously friendly Knutsford

Maxitours golfers were warmly welcomed to my home stunning course Knutsford.

The daffodils were out, the Tatton deer were strolling next to the first tee, birds were singing and the sun was cracking the flags.

With the possible exception of Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia there is nowhere better to play your golf this Spring.
The club is famous for its friendly members and hospitality and we hope you were made to feel very welcome today.

Thanks to Steve Barker and his world class catering team who looked after us so well. The bacon baps are as good as you can buy at any Golf Club in the North. Thanks to all the green staff who were up at the crack of dawn to prepare the course- excellent.

It was great to see Richard Palmer back playing Maxitours today. He always has a March and April break as he breeds sheep. He has ‘given birth’ to 1100 lambs this Spring with only 50 sheep yet to pop. He looked tired but still managed a 2nd place finish with his 43 points playing alongside Munro Donald. He loses about 5% of his lambs at birth which in an uncanny twist of fate is the same loss rate as his pro V1’s with his driver. He was straight today though and delighted with his high finish.

Scoring was exceptionally close throughout the day with four teams leading for much of the day after also scoring 43 points.
Neil Pemberton and Dave Bessant took 5th, Knutsfords Max Eaton and Charismatic Dave Walters were 4th and Ian George and Colin Gallimore were 3rd after a card play off.

Late in the day Maxitours regulars Peter Maher and Garry Phillips returned a stunning 49 points. Both these guys have played over 30 Maxitours events in the last 12 months and not won a sausage. They looked more shocked than Rory McIlroy after his chip into the water on the 13th. Peter won a singles event here nearly ten years ago and the great memories came flooding back.
‘We loved those greens declared Garry- I couldn’t miss!’
Very popular winners indeed!
Thanks to everyone for your sup
port today I hope you had a great day.

Full results from brilliant Bramhall

Maxitours at Bramhall Golf Club

There were a few glassy eyed golfers arriving this morning after the vast majority of my golfers had a long, stressful but an ultimately rewarding night watching Rory McIlroy winning the grand slam. An incredible Masters.
‘How the hell can he miss the 13th green with a little wedge!’ criticised 24 handicapper Tommy Yate when he checked in this morning. He then proceeded to hit a very little wedge into the water when I watched him playing the 4th hole in front of the Clubhouse.

There is a great feel about Bramhall and the Clubhouse is just about the best on the circuit, well lit, modern, classy, friendly atmosphere and great food! I love it here.

Two of my worst players were out on the course today. Stuart Hibbert is off 34.5 but he was upstaged by Trevor Hopes 39.5 handicap. Stuart is a legend and he was very worried that his status as the worst Maxitours golfer of all time was in danger. Fear not Stuart – Trevor can actually play to his handicap on occasions so you are still recognised as the worst golfer I have ever dealt with.
Stuarts team finished 3rd from bottom today.

Dr James Shipstone and his High Legh team took 3rd place with 84 points which was great score in windy conditions on a fiery golf course. This was matched by Mick Mahon, Munro Donald, Gary Clough and Dave Wilson from Mytton Fold who had an excellent back nine.

Winning today with a solid 86 points were the Ashton on Mersey quartet of Steve Woods, Jimmy McEwan, Tony Hope and his brother Trevor Hope also known as ‘no’ (Hope) by his golfing pals. Likeable Trevor was delighted to come in three times today as the team had a storming front nine of 46 before the breeze picked up and they became afflicted with some Rory McIlroy-like tension.
Six points on the seventeenth saw them home despite a nervy three pointer at the last. Well played chaps.
Thanks to everyone for your support and 100% attendance today. Superb.
