Maxitours at the Vale of Llangollen
It has been a terrific sporting fortnight for the Welsh. Their team is in the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup, the football team qualified for The European Championships and Llangollen Golf Club hosted lots of talented English golfers in the Maxitours event today. Thanks to all the superb staff at the special venue for looking after us all so very well.

It was unanimously agreed that the Llangollen bacon baps were the best on tour.

The superb Autumn weather continued and Llangollen really was a picture. As I looked out of the Clubhouse window there was a wonderful variety of colours on display. There was also a wonderful variety of shots on display as Maxitours players struggled on the uphill par three 18th- perhaps the toughest closing hole on the Maxitours rota.

After play John Flowers was assessing if the view from the Clubhouse was the best in the country. It is absolutely stunning with the course sitting in the bottom of an ancient glacial valley surrounded by outstanding natural features. ‘Tytherington golf and leisure still gets my vote’ he decided ‘ that young mothers aerobics class was amazing’
.
The back nine plays a lot tougher than the front nine and this was proved when only 3 teams out of 24 scored more points on their closing 9. Peter Hamlett’s team went from ‘Cruising to losing’ as they followed up an opening 43 points with a depressing 33 point haul on the back nine.

Roy Ainsworth’s team lets him down most weeks, this time Brian Ankers was to blame. ‘If Brian putted properly we would won’ said the Lymm man.

Roger Percival(7) is known as ‘Monkey’ by his team mates due to his fondness for trees. Today he kept his ball firmly on the fairways as he helped his team to an impressive 83 points. Ed Wilkinson(6), Pete Atherton(11) and Dan Percival(11) were all on fire on the back nine until the testing final hole where they could only manage a single point. Ed Wilkinson absolutely loves a beer and was nearly in tears as his team punished him for the late slip up ‘We are not staying for a drink’ said his disappointed Captain, Percival.

The strange talking Onnerley and Market Drayton Golf Club team of Ian Cairns(18), John Mills(14), Bryan Kirkham(26), and Pete Bowers(14) scored a superb 83 points to finish in 3rd. They are 4 lovely retired guys and ex PR man Bryan Kirkham’s claim to fame is looking after Joan Collins for a day. ‘She looked like an old washer woman when I picked her up at the train station but she did scrub up well’ said the charming Staffordshire man.

Formby Hall Vice- Captain Dave McDougall(11) teamed up with Jay Grant(21), Arthur Gray(21) and John Dickenson(22) They were delighted with 2nd place as they also scored 83 points. ‘I love this place’ said an emotional Dickenson as the likeable scousers team recorded their best finish of the year.

Taking the honours was Paul Woodbines(6) team of Kristian Oakes(10), Pete Keena(11) and Dave Goodwin(9). These are brilliant guys who love their golf. Woodbine is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and he has a great swing but has a fondness for thinning his chips. When he shouts ‘fore’ his team jump. Today ex international snooker and pool star Oakes also did some damage and he saw a few putts come in off the cushion as the team took a one shot win. Well played chaps I am really delighted for you.

Thanks to Rob Weston for collecting the cards late in the day. Not only is he a top golfer but he has he produced a lovely daughter and he is also very helpful to his son-in -law.

Thanks to everyone who supported this event, yours in golf, Tim

Results from Majestic Vale Royal Abbey

Fantastic new Winter Tour schedule released on Tuesday!!!

Next Thursday ‘The John Hilditch Classic’ at Dunham Forest -last few spots!

Results from beautiful Vale Royal Abbey.

Vale Royal was the ever popular venue for today’s Maxitours event.

Top manager Ian Embury and his class team gave us five star treatment and we were also ‘inundated’ with compliments about the quality of the course and the stupendous greens as players handed their cards in. I had heard reports that Vale Royal has been immaculate all summer and it seems today was no exception. Many thanks to everyone at the Club for all their hard work.

The glorious autumnal weather only added to the event and a great day was had by all.

Millionaire Joe Kirwan looked much smarter than he did at Clitheroe last week when he was seen wearing his recently purchased £8 JD Sports green golf trousers. The ‘pants, pants’ were briefly mentioned in my report last week and they have been the subject of much hilarity at his home club Bramall for the last seven days. He told me in the strictest confidence that to avoid further embarrassment they are to be ‘deported’ to his luxury villa in Spain next month. Sorry Joe.

As autumn slowly arrives it is the time of year when house spiders start to come indoors. As I washed one down the plug hole recently Kenny Chinns golf swing sprang to mind for some reason. Today the long legged seventeen handicap golfer teamed up with good friends Trevor Kenny(5) and Kishor Vadgama (17) and they were delighted to secure 3rd place with 84 points.

Brian Greenbank loves Abbeys and he has had a great week. On Sunday night he enjoyed settling down drinking cocoa and watching Downton with his wife as the new series returned. The likeable Hale member also played some majestic golf at Vale Royal. ‘I am very, very, Abbey with my performance’ he said as he handed the team card in. Playing partners Dave(13) and Mike Wainwright(20) and Matt Nelstrop(13) completed the talented team who were delighted with a season-best second place.

Taking first place and earning their first ever Maxitours victory was the Ashton on Mersey team of Paul Donnelly(8), Damien Clayton(11), Ian Thompson(8) and John Veitch(15). A poor start saw the team collect just five points after the opening two holes. Donnelly and his team then relaxed and had a wonderful back nine. Two birdies on the last gave the top lads an unlikely first win. Well played chaps, terrific!
Many thanks to everyone who played today, your support is really appreciated.

Whilst I was enjoying my invitation to The Knutsford Captains away day at Fixby, my good friend and respected PGA Professional Matthew Turnock kindly ran today’s event for me, thanks Matt.
I know that VW have had a bad week, however after a three course meal and plenty of red wine on the drive back from Huddersfield late last night there were a few faulty Emissions coming from some of our older members sitting near the back of the coach.

A gold cigarette lighter was lost on the 9th fairway – if you found it please call 07944 947581.

Maxitours at classy Clitheroe

A superb Autumn day greeted over 100 competitors as Maxitours visited Clitheroe for the first time in its nine year history. It was well worth the wait:
‘What a course’ said Mike Spencer
‘Tremendous ‘ commented Ian Ainsworth.
‘Magnifico’ sung John Dickenson
‘I can’t remember but I think that was better than sxx’ was how an anonymous member expressed his admiration.
Kevin Chisnall was amazed at how manicured the golf course was. ‘I tried to pick a loose blade of grass to throw in the air to see where the wind was but the fairways were so immaculate I couldn’t find one!’

Thanks to everyone at this wonderful course for your superb hospitality throughout the day we were looked after extremely well.

Joe Kirwan turned up today wearing some bright green golf pants. ‘You can get 2 pairs for £16 from JD Sports’ announced the delighted millionaire. If you also want to look as ridiculous as Joe the nearest store is located at the Trafford centre and I am assured there are plenty of trousers left in the sale.

Mike Emerson asked for a slightly earlier tee time as he had to get back for the ‘big match’ tonight. I asked him if he though City would beat Juventus but he informed me he was watching ‘Harrogate against North Ferriby’. Sad but true.

Mick Mahon is enjoying his golf much more now he has taken the cardboard out of his titleist cap. He has been playing with a slightly chafed head for the past 6 weeks after winning the cap in the Maxitours event at Stockport. Playing partner Dave Westwood spotted the cardboard this morning as Mick prepared to play. ‘It’s been agony’ added the lovable Lancastrian.

In today’s event the golf course was playing short but the fast sloping greens got the better of many players as scoring was average.
Thirty years ago today Europe won the Ryder Cup for the first time after a 20 year losing streak. It has nearly been that long since Niall Lynch(10) last won a prize. He teamed up with Brian Hopkins(5) and after a good start some nerves around the turn where they dropped a couple of shots cost the Doctor a chance of a top five finish. He was happy to take 6th place.

As Manchester United return to the Champions league this week after a 12 month absence. Ex players Stuart Pearson and Frank Stapleton also returned to Maxitours after a Summer break. Let’s hope United return in style like Pearson(6) who teamed up with likeable Dave Wilson(8) to take 4th place with 42 points.

Burnley Golf Club’s Kim Stevens(6) and Bruno Beneduci(7) took 5th place with a superb 42 points. Bruno ran the successful ‘ Dolphin Sandwich ‘shop in nearby Burnley for many years. I prefer ham personally.

Steve Aspinall (9)from Birchwood and Barry Wellings(6) played solid golf to finish in 3rd place also on 42 points. Aiden Hoosen(1) and Phil Myers(5) took 2nd place after an excellent 23 points on the back nine saw them win a card play off to take 2nd.

Accrington’s Trevor Foster(scr) played in the Open at Lytham in 1988 and his talented daughter made it a unique family double when she played in the Ladies British Open three years ago. Today he once again found his putting boots and rolled back the years with 5 birdies on the front nine, he then added another on the back nine. Awe struck partner Chris Beaghan(11) managed to contribute twice. Trevor’s great golf saw a 4 shot winning margin as he mastered the tricky greens. Great golf chaps, well played.

Thanks to all players for your support, there has not been a single no show all summer -terrific.

Many thanks to Ian King from EGS oil for his sponsorship. He provides home heating Oil at great prices and they are a very freindly and reliable company. Maxitours players receive £25 off their first orders. 01625 873163.
