Maxitours at lovely Lancaster

Maxitours at lovely Lancaster

The entrance hall to Lancaster is the grandest in the land and it is a real pleasure to hand the cards out in such regal surroundings. Lots of players commented that I looked even more important than normal when they checked in. Bring it on.

Feedback was terrific throughout the day- the general consensus was that this is a wonderful place to play golf.
The weather was perfect and Lancaster is just a short journey up the M6. Brilliant.

The par threes at Lancaster take some playing but there was something in the air as Andy Parrington had his first ever hole in one and looked like he was going to cry with joy, three other players had two twos. Even David Kelly had a couple. Incredible.

Dave Griffiths is another lovable Maxitours character.
‘Those greens were so fast it was impossible. Even a lag putt goes ten feet past the flag.’
‘Did you think about hitting it a bit gentler Dave?’
‘Oh yeah ill try that next time.’

Pete Walters is a great bloke and always offers to buy me a drink after his round. I don’t know where he hit his golf ball today but after his round he told me that the golf course was great but there were a few hornets knocking around. Nobody else saw as much as a fly.

There was almost no rough out there so big hitters enjoyed the conditions and scoring was excellent from the younger teams for a change.

It was great to see Steve Aspinall and his team of Ken Booth, Barry Wellings and Alan Simpson take 3rd place.
Stamfords Paul Traynor, Richard Margrave, Ian Fearns and scratch golfer Mike Grainger took 2nd with an excellent 89 points for their bets of the season finish.

Winning were the Wychwood Park quartet who finally found some form to record a first win for over five years. They destroyed the short par fives and were delighted with the win.

Tom Butler had never played here before.
‘We had such a good day. The course is right up there with the best. Thanks so much Tim. ‘Paul Price, Mick Berrisford and Leigh Roberts completed the suuccesful quartet.

Thanks everyone for your 100% attendance.
Maxitours players have class. Thank you.

Maxitours at dazzling Davenport

A gloomy day but a sparkling venue dazzled our players at Davenport today. Martin Humphries talks twaddle most of the time but he knows a good golf course when he sees one. He enjoys all the courses we play in the Stockport area but rates Davenport as his favourite.

I always get lots of positives from players who love this place- it has a real charm of its own and is a really interesting course with great views over Manchester and the Cheshire plain.

The course is in the foothills of the peak district and has no trains, planes or automobiles, it is just an idyllic setting for a game of golf.

Richard Margreave plays golf seven days a week but he felt that the bunkers and greens are as good as anywhere. There has been some great investment with the quality of sand and riveting, our golfers are enjoying the results.

There were lots of twos again today thanks for marking them clearly for me. I missed Harry Bonds birdie last week but in my defence the card was that poorly marked I sent it to Bletchley Park to be deciphered.

Howard Kelly holed his approach shot for a lovely eagle on the 5th but star of the day was John Broomhead with his hole in one on the 222 yard 7th hole. I hope everyone enjoyed their drink on the big spending Yorkshireman.

In your dreams.

Scoring was tight at the top with four teams scoring 85 points. Andy Taylor, Martin Firth, Andy Hockenhull and Mike Taylor won the card play off with the best back nine. Kev Harts well liked team were 3rd , Andrew Hills Hazel Grove quartet were 4th and it was great to see Richard Blackwell back to full fitness and finishing 5th.

Winning today were Saddleworths Lee Tilley(8), Dave Rhodes(12), Dave Sarsfield(14) and Billy (17) with a solid 86 points. They showed their bottle and picked up six points on the closing hole when all around them teams were dropping shots.

Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance today.

Maxitours at wonderful Warrington

There have been reports of excellent greens at Warrington filtering back to me over the last few weeks and they were fully justified after our visit to this lovely golf course today.

It was an education just watching the greenkeeper carefully raking the bunker on the 18th green this morning- real pride and professionalism. Terrific.

The course keeps improving and the well-designed run off areas which have been in place for a few years add a touch of class to this top course. Thank you Warrington.

John Hume is a lovely bloke. He is a highish handicapper who normally loses a few balls when he plays. He hit a new low today when he lost his team in the clubhouse.

He looked everywhere for them and was so frantic he even looked in the lift. Eventually he found them tucked in the corner of the patio.

At one stage he nearly asked me if I had a provisional team he could have a drink with.

Maxitours is considering changing its name to ‘the Tony Leigh fancy dress tour.’

Tony has already come dressed as a cricketer and Gary Players taller and much less talented brother. Today he came dressed as a deck chair. We can’t wait for next weeks outfit.

Veteran Jim Smith isn’t good at understanding the new handicap system and is even worse with new technology.

‘Since I got this app on my phone my handicap has reduced. How do you delete it?’

No answer to that one.

In today’s event which coincided with the summer solstice it was certainly the Longest day for Graham Pike who helped his team into last place.

Housewife favourite John Dickenson was the real deal today as he led his team into second place. Paul Lord, Dave McDougall and Mike Dempsey completed the quartet.

Generous Scotsman Jimmy McEwans Ashton in Makerfield team of Grant Benson, Jason Atherton and Ian Cooper were deliriously happy to take first prize.

They made the most of the superb receptive greens and fast fairways and had a solid 89 points. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support and to my son James who collected the cards for the last few hours. He lives at home rent free, leaves the lights on and eats like a king so he won’t expect any wages…A perfect day all round.

Maxitours at grand Hazel Grove

Another terrific day of golf was enjoyed by everyone at Hazel Grove today.

The club has won a number of awards and continues to improve with a new chipping area for its members and a new balcony to enjoy drinks in the sunshine. Fantastic progress.

I don’t know what is in the Hazel Grove air but wherever you look you see happy members. They are gardening, parking cars, running the half way house and generally making us feel very, very welcome.

What a club. Thank you.

They also have James Rowlands as their pro- great lad and friend.

There were a few hot faces in the bar after 18 holes in Mediterranean heat. Barry Caldwell had a twig stuck in his hair after searching for a ball at the last but claimed he put it there to shelter from the sun. Geoff Bickerton looked ill but on closer inspection it was the three pints of suncream he put on his face.
The bar did a roaring trade. Thank you.

We all know that golf is a marvellous game and you can play with all levels, ages and abilities.

Rob Higginbotham was proud to play with his son Jan and grandson Freddie who looked really great lads. ‘Each generation of the Higginbotham family is gradually getting better. ‘ He said proudly.

Robs dad must have been a terrible golfer.

Jonny Barton picked up his prize today after his ‘Maxitours shock of the year’ first ever victory two weeks ago. He got overexcited.
‘I’ve always wanted to get a prize from your car!’ He gibbered.
‘You’ve won a chill out top – do you want a navy one or a black one?’ I asked him calmly.
‘Whats the difference?’ he eagerly wanted to know.
‘One is navy and one is black.’ .

Scoring was the closest in Maxitours history today. Great to see.

Three teams were one off the pace with 84 points and four teams shared the winning score of 85 points!

Ex Copper but nice guy Neale Laurents team had the best front nine of the day with 45 points but fell away on the back nine.
Andrew Hill hits it straighter than I can point and he helped his Hazel Grove team into 3rd .

Jimmy Caffrey(17) and Kit Parkington(7) picked up 7 points on the closing hole as they finished in style. They teamed up with Colin Roberts(22) and Dave Marchant(17) who were short of players three days ago.
I had to inform them that their playing partners don’t play this well every week but new friendships were made so everyone was a winner.

Taking the honours was Dan Moore (16) Tony Jennison(4) John Hilton (14) and Richard Blackwell(12) the team struggled to 36 points on the front nine before catching fire on the back nine with a scorching 49 points- well played guys great score!!

MAXITOURS AT “MARVELOUS” MOTTRAM 8th JUNE

Thanks again to my friend Matt Turnock from Mottram Hall for running today’s event.

A glorious summer’s day with a light breeze made for tricky conditions. The recent dry weather meant plenty of run on the ball but Mottram is one of the longest courses in Cheshire that Maxitour player’s encounter so it still played tough. The last few weeks had seen the rough shoot up and so keeping it on the fairway was a must if teams were going to score well.

The late starters seemed to fare better with a flurry of better scores in the last half dozen teams led by Callaway rep Tom Gradwell’s team of Steve Mobley, Lee Thornycroft and Josh Nadin with a best of the day 87 points.

Thanks again for all your support, Tim.
