Maxitours Algarvian Classic day 1.

Maxitours players were golfing at the premier resort in Europe today in the first round of the Algarvian Classic.

The sun was cracking the flags, players were wearing shorts and the Laranjal golf course was in spectacular condition.

Gary Corbett has travelled the world and played on golf courses I can only dream about. ‘I think that these are the best greens I have played on – ever!’ Reported the likeable Mere man.

‘What a day. Life is too short to miss Maxitours in January!’ Declared wise and big -hitting Nigel Jenkins.

‘It was a bit too hot for me out there!’ Announced Bramhall’s Ian King as his team made a solid start.

The Prestbury ‘A’ team won last year and Chris Adams, Garry Titchen, Club Captain Martin Prescott and Mark Richardson gave them a great start to the 2026 Algarvian Classic with 86 points. There were birdies and eagles galore as they made the most of the stunning conditions.
The Mere team in second and Mick Mahons Myton Fold team in third are both looking good.

We visit Quinta North tomorrow – another gem of a golf course.

Keep off the red tonight – moving day tomorrow everyone.
Yours in golf and friendship,

Tim

Maxitours at Superb Shrigley Hall

Maxitours at superb Shrigley Hall

A great day was enjoyed by all at lovely Shrigley Hall. The beautiful course nestles proudly in the Pennine foothills and the views are superb. The clouds parted at 10am and it was lovely to play under blue skies and sunshine all afternoon.

The greens were superb and as most other local courses were closed Shrigley Hall was well and truly open. Thanks to Golf Manager Andy for his hospitality, not only does he book golf societies and make us feel welcome but he can also rustle up a mean bacon sandwich if the kitchen is short. Top man.

Another top man is Gary Lasham. His golf game is rapidly improving (he won nearest the pin today) but his memory is declining.

‘Where’s big Gerry our 4th man – I thought he’d be here by now? It’s not like him to be late.’ He asked his playing partners when he checked in.

‘He’s waiting for you to pick him up in Knutsford.’ Informed intelligent team mate Paul Meehan.

‘You put a message on the group chat last night.’

Nigel Milroy knows how to treat his golfing wife at Christmas. What are you buying your Mrs this year? I overheard his playing partner ask.

‘I’m treating her to a Winter mat this year.’

The millionaire businessman added: ‘It’s a good one.’

Ex RAF man Paul Fell and his lovely wife Debs played today. He has been a Maxitours ever-present for the past ten years but is moving to Spain in January if his house sale goes through. This could be the last we see of him for a while. All the best Paul.

‘Moving abroad is the only way I can get out of playing with Nigel Ashton each week.’ He admitted.

The last hole at Shrigley is a classic par three over water with stunning views over the Cheshire plain.

You have to carry a beautiful lake, a family of ducks and a large bunker guarding the front of the green. Showing his full array of shots Bob Scott decided to lay up short of the trouble and hit his 3 wood five yards to leave a full shot. Good thinking Bob.

In todays event the Bramall Team of John Simpson, Andy Bradshaw, Matt Ford and Steve Profitt took 3rd with 83 points. They was pipped by Garry Owen, Alan Gayle, Alistair Holloway and Sam Beverley with 84.

Winning today with a terrific 86 points was Jim Caldwell, Andrew Aherne, John Roome and Nigel Milroy.

Thanks to everyone for your incredible support once again this year. All the Clubs we deal with tell me you are the best group they come across and I am proud to have you as my players. Have a great Christmas and a terrific golfing year in 2026.

Best wishes,

Tim, Suzy, Ella and James.

Results from magnificent Mottram Hall

Room on the Algarvian Classic in January – get away from the cold and play competitive friendly golf on three of the best courses Europe has to offer!
Amazing Masters trip -now room for just 2 players!!

Maxitours at Mottram Hall

Maxitours players battled the elements at Mottram Hall today.
I was incredibly impressed by everyone’s staying power as I watched the umbrellas pass by. Thanks so much. I played here two weeks ago and the greens are up there with the best in Cheshire. The fairways also drain incredibly well. Congratulations to the green staff for presenting such a great course.

Lack of wind meant it wasn’t biting cold but unfortunately the clouds never parted as predicted and rain fell for most of the day.
‘I’ve taken off 5 layers and managed to find one that’s only semi damp!’ Announced positive Neil Pemberton as he came in the Clubhouse after his round.

If it makes you feel any better I actually got a little bit of heatstroke as I sat next to the roaring Mottram Hall Club house fire watching the first day of the cricket unfold. I had to have a glass of iced water to cool down.

I used to work at Mottram Hall and had over fifteen happy years here. A highlight was one evening when I was cashing up I looked around to see Norman Wisdom walk in the shop. He pretended to trip over one of the golf bags to make me smile. Classic. Teaching Jeremy Clarkson was also interesting and still clear in my memory- he was not the greatest listener I have ever coached.

Golf courses in Winter play so much longer than in the Summer. The 17th hole had a 164 yard carry over water –the air was so heavy it was a good hit with a driver for lots of players today. Jimmy Cox checked to see if his ball had a puncture.
‘It was going nowhere today.’ Added the likeable Denton man.

In today’s event even David Gill who was the brains behind the rise of Manchester United in the 90’s couldn’t raise the fortunes of his Hale team and they finished 4th last on 75 points. Lets hope the reds fare better tonight.

Howard Kelley and his Tytherington men continued their good form and took 3rd place with 84 points.
First place was decided on an incredibly tight card play-off.
Ashton in Makerfields Barry Caldwell, John Lee, Paul Woods and Alan Scott had the round of their lives and a homeward 45 points saw them score 86 points.
Steve Austin, Richard Blackwell, John Hilton and Andy Hamlett used to be members at Mottram Hall and they made the most of their local knowledge to score 86 points, also scoring 45 on the back nine. They scored six points on each of the closing three holes to take first prize.

Thanks for your support everyone. Shrigley Hall next week before the Christmas break.
Yours in Golf,
Tim
