Maxitours at fabulous Formby Hall

Glorious blue skies and a lovely sea breeze were the rewards for well over 100 Maxitours competitors who travelled to the Merseyside coast today.

Formby Hall was described as ‘magnificent’ by more than a few players today. I have to say that the greens and surrounds looked excellent.

The course is a true championship venue and has hosted a number of professional events. I played in a challenge tour event here in 1998 when a fresh-faced Justin Rose narrowly pipped me by 24 shots.

Thanks to Leighton Williams and all the team. The food in the clubhouse was excellent.

The only issue with today’s event was the price of fuel. The local Tesco’s was over £1.79 a litre making Formby the only place in Britain more expensive than Knutsford.

If you had a bad round today try and remember that things could be a lot worse -you could be going to Goodison with the Jim Rymer team for example. They didn’t look too confident as they headed to Everton to watch their favourite team take on Newcastle. Lambs to the slaughter.

Dave Haycocks was all over the place today. They call him the major because he plays military golf – left, right, left, right. He hit his approach shot into room 116 as he played the 18th.

Highlight of the day was seeing John Dickenson after his recent illness. Great to see him looking so well -he will be back playing very soon.

The wind dropped a little late in the day and scoring improved noticeably.

Sandiways Gary Neiles and his Cheshire set took 4th place with 83 points.

Dave Goodwin (who is famous for only smiling when he has wind) was once again looking less miserable than normal as his team took 3rd place. Brothers Ian and Dave Snape and Dave Greenwood completed the team.

Second place went to Denton’s Tony Grinnell, Alistair Holloway, Knutsford’s Tony Taylor and Formby Hall’s Phil Woolem. The team were assembled at the last minute and they all gelled wonderfully.

First place went to the popular figure of Martin Humphries(8). He teamed up with fellow Dean Wood members Paul Webb(20), Andy Haswell(plus 3) and the most successful female in Maxitours history- Joyce ‘pocket rocket’Larkin (17). Despite dropping a shot into the wind at the last they won by a single point with a great score of 86.

Great golf, well played!

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance.

Maxitours at Reddish Vale

Maxitours at Alister Mackenzie’s Reddish Vale

Reddish Vale is known to be one of the very best Winter courses in Manchester and as expected it was exceptionally dry for our Maxitours players today. Many thanks to the greens staff for hand cutting the surfaces and presenting such a great test for players today. Everyone appreciated that such a high quality course could stand in as a reserve this week.

Spring was definitely in the air and it really felt like the golf season was finally underway. Daffodils were plentiful and the Players tour starts tonight. I hope everyone has an enjoyable season.

The 18th hole at Reddish is ‘on a slight upslope’ shall we say. Kind hearted Simon Wilkinson kindly offered to carry eighty-year old John Lynskys bag for him up the hill, unfortunately his ball pocket was open and veteran John had to sprint 50 yards down the hill to pick them all up.

Tony Insley needs to move into the 21st century. I asked him for his email address so he could get the results.
‘It is in my car.’ He replied.

Scoring was tough, putting in the windy conditions on firm fast greens took its toll on some groups. Third place went to the popular Birchwood quartet of Simon Wilkinson, Dave Monk, Barry Wilson and John Lynsky with 83 points.

Cheshire senior player Martin France(2) and his Lymm team of Ed Wilkinson(5), Pete Atherton(9) and John Wright(5) picked up 6 shots over the closing two holes to take 2nd with 87 points but this feat was matched by Deanwoods’ Joyce Larkin(17) and her team.

Crafty old Joyce has a great mix of handicaps ranging from classy 1 handicapper Kieran McCarthy through to Paul Webb who is a big bloke to be playing off 26. Adrian Brown steadies the ship off 16 handicap. They scored an excellent 88 points to take a narrow victory- picking up a spectacular 8 points on their closing hole to win.

Maxitours at cracking Conwy

What a great day!
Nearly 100 players enjoyed playing this classic Welsh links course. The greens were firm and fast and the fairways dry and puddle free. The only mud in sight was on Richard French’s shoes but these have been muddy for five years.

Conwy hosted the Curtis Cup last year and is one of the best links courses in the British Isles. Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome today.

It has been a bad week for Manchester United and Warrington Wolves fan Brian Ankers who has seen his favourite teams suffer heavy defeats. He was hoping things would improve at Conwy today but alas things didn’t improve for the likeable Lymm Man and he finished a lowly 16th.

Lymm’s Jonny Barton is one of the scruffiest golfers on Maxitours and usually resembles a scarecrow. He looked a bit smarter than usual today and had a new experience when he was quietly eating a meat pie on the 9th hole and was attacked by three crows. He will be wearing his usual attire next week so should be fine.

Once again scoring was very close. There was a steady breeze but wind direction was in the opposite direction to usual and it meant that the harder holes were playing easier. And the easier holes were playing tougher.

Third place went to the Welsh team of Colin Bryan, Ian Venables, Mike Lowe and Roy Adkins with an excellent 84 points.

Dave Sarsfield and his team were struggling with just 35 points on the front nine before catching fire and coming home in an incredible 49 points to take 2nd place. Lee Tilley, Dave Rhodes and Pete Norbury completed the team.

Taking the honours were recently retired Doctors James and Alison Shipstone and their less important partners John Hunt and Denis O’Neill. The Shipstones’ are desperately trying to spend their hefty pensions and therefor playing plenty of golf. The practice paid off as they recorded a first win in a couple of years after 85 points. Alison and Denis both birdied the 6th hole to give the team a great start.

Thanks to everyone for playing I hope you enjoyed the course and excellent hospitality, Tim.

Conwy start sheet for Monday and change of venue on Thursday

Dear Maxitours player,

Happy Spring!

Monday start times at Conwy can be found below.

Thursday’s event has been moved to Alastair Mackenzie designed Reddish Vale due to a few drainage issues at Ringway caused by the recent intense rainfall.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

I have played Reddish three times this winter and the course is incredibly dry and firm. I spoke to respected head professional Andy Myers and he tells me that the greens are currently the best in the area.
Please let me know if you are unable to play.

Yours in golf,
Tim

Stockport cancelled

Dear Maxitours player,

Monday at Stockport has been postponed due to the incredible amount of rainfall we have had recently.
The Club are excellent to deal with and we are trying to find another date as they can’t guarantee that 18 holes will be open.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

It will be Spring on Tuesday so keep smiling!

Yours in Golf,
Tim
