The forecast looks excellent for tomorrow afternoon with winds easing and temperatures rising after overnight rain so things should be great for our 12pm shotgun.

Course information will be updated in the morning at 9am after I have a chat with their highly respected professional Paul Dennis and excellent head green keeper David Lippiatte but after speaking to them both today everything looks positive unless we have really heavy rainfall

There is some debris on the course which is to be expected after the storm but the greens are in their usual super condition

Maxitours at Classy Caldy

An incredible day was enjoyed by my Maxitours players at Caldy.
Clear blue skies with just the hint of a zephyr from the West meant absolutely perfect golfing weather.

The course was in truly magnificent condition. Excellent Head green keeper Carl Frocher still remained frustrated as he had hoped to hand cut the greens for us this morning but he was unable to due to the heavy overnight frost. They were still magnificent. Thanks for your great work Carl.

The Players event at TPC Sawgrass takes place in just over a month and The Masters starts in eight weeks time. With a few daffodils and crocuses lining the fairways it really feels like we have broken the back of Winter.. Woo-hoo!

Lancastrian entertainer Stuart Roach played today and he turned up in his tour van. He does a ‘trio tribute act’ of David Bowie, Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond and has his picture plastered on the side of his motor. He impersonated top Golf Professional Tiger Woods on the front nine as his team collected an impressive 42 points however he was more Tim Maxwell on the back nine when the team collected a paltry 28 points.

In todays event only Roy Ainsworths team scored more points on the testing back nine than the easier front nine.
Gary Neiles Sandiway team took third place with 79 points narrowly beating Les Russons Bramall men on the back nine play off.
Withington Solicitor Martin Keates(3) loves it at Caldy as it was the scene of his only ever Maxitours victory last year. They reassembled the winning team of Iain Bartholomew(1) Kev Hawkins(8) and John Owen(9) and nearly pulled it off again! Their 80 points was good enough for second place.
Carden Parks Paul Fell(4) Mike Lowe(10) Nigel Ashton(12) and Colin Bryan(8) could see their Welsh homeland over the Dee Estuary all day and they were inspired by the stunning views. Fell birdied both par 3’s and par 5’s on his front nine and managed to steer his team home safely with a battling back nine.

Well played chaps, great scoring on a golf course that was playing long today.

I’m getting out of here quickly as I’ve met enough chirpy Liverpool supporters for one day.

Results from brilliant North Wales Many thanks to Matt Turnock for running the event as I am running my final event in Portugal. The sun was shining but the gentle breeze at the start of the day turned into a howling gale by the end of the afternoon making for very tough conditions. Some of the par 5’s were reachable in 2 and the odd par 4 was driven but the par 3’s into the wind were monsters with some playing 3 to 4 clubs more than normal. “That was brutal” came the comment from the normally in form team led by Richard Blackwell slumping to an uncharacteristic 74. At least Richard managed to avoid falling in any bunkers this week. Winning team with 90 points of Ed Wilkinson, Roger Percival, Martin Firth and Rob Parry can all buy me a drink next time as I can claim credit for putting the two pairs together on this occasion. They didn’t have a particularly great front 9 holes only carding 40 points but they all came alive on the back 9 with a scorching 50 points – WOW !! In second place was Kev Harts team with a great effort of 89 points and a creditable 3rd on 88 points carding two eagle 3’s on the par 5th was Ray Tennants’ team. Thanks to all the friendly team of North Wales Golf Club, a warm and courteous welcome as always and splendid food from the catering staff. Well done everyone and thanks for all your support. The North Wales course is excellent and 18 holes will be fully open tomorrow (unless there is a massive downpour overnight but NO RAIN AT ALL is forecast) and I have room for fourballs at 10.50am and 11.52am if you wish to enter.

Caldy next week -Thursday 6th February

Just a heads up for my players:
The Caldy clubhouse is undergoing some major refurbishment and there will be no catering at all available next Thursday before or after play- sorry.
There are a number of nice coffee shops in Kirby just a mile away if you want refreshments..There is also a McDonalds not too far away for Graham Jackson.

I have just spoken to the brilliant Caldy pro Alan Gibson and he says that as the clubhouse is undergoing major refurbishment the Pro shop. toilets, snooker room and locker rooms are still open but the rest of the Clubhouse is shut
He also assures me:
‘The Course and greens are in fabulous condition!’

Maxitours at Vale Royal

Perfectly still and mild conditions made for a very enjoyable day at the lovely Vale Royal complex. This is an exceptional venue with possibly the best Winter greens in Cheshire and always a firm favourite with our players. Thanks to all the staff for their hospitality.

All the reports from my players after their rounds were very positive indeed.

It was great to be back on British soil after living the dream in Portugal and I really enjoyed the cool dank, cloudy conditions in Cheshire today.

The report is slightly shorter than usual as I cant remember what my children look like.

The Lymm team of Phil Young(9) Rick Shaw(10) Paddy Moran(11) and Russ Collitt(13) took 4th with a solid 84 points. Rick Shaw was in the bar afterwards and explained how the team score could have been much better. He hit his best drive of the day but it only went 140 yards and disappeared into a bunker. He blamed it on the faulty lake ball he had just taken from his bag. I’ve heard every excuse under the sun but this is a new one on me.

Lovely Heyrose member Lewis Marland(15) was treated to a 1st tee start and he teamed up with Dukenfields Neale Laurent(14), Phil Dickens(13) and John Harrop(10) to take 3rd place also on 85,

Second place went to the strange talking Accrington team. I can’t write anything funny about them as I cant understand a word they say. They scored 86 points. Dave Waite (10) Pete Houston (14) Connor Taylor (10) and Jordan Brown(4) were the team members.

Winning today was the Sandiway/Lymm team of Alan Forber(15) Gary Neiles (6) John Norton(12) and Jimmy ‘five pars’ Ainscough(21) who made the most of his 16 shots. Well played guys I am delighted you had a great day.
