Maxitours at stunning Sandiway

Sandiway was the glorious setting for today’s Maxitours event. The course is rated by many as the best in Cheshire and there was plenty of praise for the tremendous layout throughout the day.

Fiona the house Manager is brilliant and really great with my guys. She was described as gorgeous by more than one Maxitours player. Thanks to Fiona and all the staff for looking after us so well. PGA pro Gareth Jones is also at the top of his profession and his team made us feel very welcome.
Thanks to all players- once again absolutely nobody let me down and your 100% attendance is quite superb- brilliant.

Things also got off to a great start for portly Pete Nixon. He was expecting rain after checking his dodgy weather app and was delighted to see clear blue skies this morning. His eyes really lit up when he discovered that the new half way house was open today ‘Do they do pork pies in there? he asked as he ordered his second bacon bap.

Jack Coleman was talking to his mates in the clubhouse and he feels that there is now far too much player power for footballers in the Premiership at the moment. There is certainly not too much player power in his team however as their longest drive off the first tee just about made the fairway. Luckily Jack’s short game is world class.

Graham Kenyon models himself on Andy ‘beef ‘Johnson. He has a huge black beard which if he ever shaved it off could fill a small duvet. He had to rush on the tee as he was late due to being stuck in traffic during the long journey from his hometown Buxton ‘I was clean shaven when I set off in my car this morning!’ chuckled the Derbyshire man.

Steve Foxcroft is a lovely man with a tidy golf game. His only minor fault is that he enjoys talking me through his entire round each week. Today things hit a new low as he actually had a few photographs on his iphone to show me how close some of his approach shots were. Next week I might tell him the event is full in case he decides to bring his holiday photos.

In todays event gentle giant Dave Wainwright birdied the tough 10th to help his Hale team into 7th place.
Brian Hopkins’ Shrigley Hall team had 51 points in a tremendous front nine but the putts failed to drop and 36 points on the back nine saw them finish in 5th. Fred Greens’ well travelled team also scored 87 points, the Lancaster Golf Club man bombed some great putts around the turn to take 4th place.
The Sandiway Captain Martin Finney (13)used his local knowledge to help his team of Gary Neiles(6) and father and son Joe(15) and Paul Yates(6) take a very creditable 3rd place also on 87 points.
Sale Golf Clubs Simon Poucher(14) loves Sandiway and he could have had a memorable victory today. They dropped a shot at the last to miss out by a stroke. Brendan Leighton(16), Dave McGuiness(9) and Andy Stone(15) all played excellent golf.
Trevor Foster (+1) has finished 2nd in the Scottish seniors this season and the famous Lancashire Amatuer was on form again at Sandiway. His team recorded a record five 2’s including a vital one at the last from secret weapon Matt Mortimer(14) to record an emotional victory. Phil Mayer(10) and Andy Walmsley (8) completed the likeable Accrington team. Well played chaps- great golf.

If you think the new Callaway Epic goes a long way you may want to think again. Stuart Ford flushed his expensive new driver at last to win nearest the pin- it is only 160 yards long, slightly downhill, downwind and his ball rolled half the way. Good shot Stuart.

Maxitours at Marvellous Mere

Maxitours at Marvellous Mere Golf and Country Club

Once again superb weather conditions greeted well over 100 maxitours competitors at the Mere golf hotel and spa.

Thanks to the lovely Karen Gallagher for helping me to run the event today as I ran a members event at Carden this morning.

Once again entry into the 2’s sweep was higher than normal when Karen is around looks like my players all struggle to say no to an attractive blonde.

Feedback regarding the presentation of golf course was excellent so many thanks to Gwen and his excellent team for all their hard work
Managers Joe Gates and Max are also terrific to deal with and help the day run smoothly.

The scoring was once again not high which is a real reflection on the integrity of the players on my tour who play with genuine handicaps -thank you.

Congratulations to the winning pair Ashton on Merseys’ likeable Gary Hempstead and Steve Priest who took the honours in perfect conditions off the yellow tees with just 43 points. Priest normally has to say a few prayers when playing with erratic Hempstead but today Gary holed more than his fair share of putts to earn an emotional first victory . Well played chaps!

It is great to see nice guy Dave McCallum win nearest the Pin. I used to coach him twenty years ago when I was at Mottram Hall and even though I was talking rubbish he always used to give me fiver tip – legend.

Thanks to all Maxitours players who supported this event- sorry the report is a little shorter than usual- busy day! Tim

Maxitours at World Class Vale Royal

Another great days golf was had by all at the stunning Vale Royal Abbey.

The course just gets better and better each year and my Maxitours players were once again raving about the quality of the golf course.

‘That was fabulous!’ said well travelled David Kelly who went out in the first match. ‘I’ve played Ganton, Fulford and Alwoodley recently but none of them were in as good condition as that- they were even ironing the greens in front of us, changing the holes and raking the bunkers- brilliant!’

Not only are the green keepers at the top of their game but all the Vale Royal staff were terrific – the hospitality was top notch.

There was once again 100% attendance from my Maxitours players, to have customers with such integrity makes my job a real pleasure- thank you very much indeed.

‘Has our 4th player already checked in with you ?’ Asked one of today’s teams delayed by some road works.
‘What does he look like?’
‘He’s a little fat man with a bald head’.
‘I’ve no idea, nearly half of my players fit that description .’ I replied.

The English women’s football team dashed the nations hopes with a dismal performance against Holland last night The Knutsford ladies team managed to restore the country’s faith in the fairer sex a little bit with a best of the day 42 points on the front nine. Unfortunately this was followed up by an average 34 on the back nine. Team Captain Rachel Horsley asked me to mention in my report that they beat John Atkins Knutsford men’s team.

After also throwing away a great score with a dismal back nine disappointed philosopher John Farnsworth(21) from Mytton Fold informed me that ‘There was no one to blame, only ourselves’.
I know that John.

Eugenio Fernandez sounds like he should be playing football in an expensive Spanish football team instead he was playing in Steve Aspinalls’ Northern premier level golf team. They could only manage a relegation threatening 74 points.

It was a delight to see my lovely wife Suzy having a day out and she enjoyed competing in her first ever Maxitours event. If any of you were wondering- it was a tough decision and it kept me awake last night but no I didn’t charge her for playing.

In today’s event the scoring was not too impressive as the sloping greens got the better of our players. Taking 3rd place with 83 points was the big drinking Hazel Grove team of Ian Walters(14), Roy Campion(6), Chris Heyes(5) and Arron Liddell (16). They could have won but Arron was a Liddell bit unlucky.

Prestbury millionaire investors Chris Adams(13), Steve Hall(17), Andy Oakes(6) and Charlie Cunningham(12) are an unlikely looking portfolio of players but they performed above expectations today and got a good return on their efforts. They made the most of the good forecast and picked up five shots on the closing two holes to take 2nd place also with 83 points. They celebrated with a SIPP of San Miguel and then SHAREd some nuts

Winning back to back events for the first time in Maxitours history was Wilmslow’s Jim Caldwell(10) with 84 points. The Aston Marten driving seventy year old golf fanatic assembled a different team from last week but he was still the main man. The team finished twelve under par but they picked up 7 of these shots between the 13th and 15th holes. The highlight of which was Jim’s holed pitching wedge on the 14th for an unlikely eagle. Nigel Milroy(14), Peter Maxwell(11) and Peter Griggs(16) completed the likeable quartet. Well played chaps!

Thanks to all who played today, your support is greatly appreciated.
Yours in Golf, Tim.

Maxitours at delightful Dunham Forest

Dunham Forest was once again at its majestic best for the visit of Maxitours.
The towering oak and beech trees did a great job sucking up the rain water from the fairways after a couple of heavy showers and the excellent free draining greens were really terrific to putt on. Thanks to all the green keepers for their fine efforts.

Thanks also to PGA professional Paul Dennis and his highly rated team and Mike and Leslie Saxon for providing possibly the best Clubhouse food in the North.

Steve Heywood is a lovely man and doing well in the Order of Merit with his pal Nigel ‘officer’ Dibble. He was desperate to play this week and noticed that John Farnsworth and Richard Palmer needed two players to make a four so he asked me to team them up. Farnsworth and Palmer will tell you themselves that they have ‘unique’ golf swings. On the first hole Richard got under his tee shot and it landed on the 4th green , John topped his way down the fairway. Steve nearly phoned me up to ask ‘Who the hell have you put us with?’ Luckily things improved and the team had a very respectable 79 points.

Mark Hagerty hit a new Maxitours low when he not only lost a couple of golf balls on the course but he also lost his shoes. ‘I Can’t find them in the changing room anywhere and I am sure I put them in there!’ He was delighted when I pointed out that there are actually two changing rooms at Dunham and he was looking in the wrong one.

Dunham Forest used to be a fourteen hole golf course before they rented some new land from the National trust forty years ago to make 18 holes . John Hilditch wished it was still a fourteen hole course as his team dropped six costly shots on the final four to throw away a great score.

Jim Rymer is very optimistic. Not only did he think he would win today’s event the Liverpool lawyer also thinks that Everton will do well this season. He headed off to Goodison after his round to watch Wayne Rooney make his second Everton debut . Jim finished in mid table mediocrity rather like his football team.

Chris Adams and his well spoken Prestbury team had a very strong finish to take 5th place on the card play-off with 82 points.

Brian Hopkins(4) started his round with three birdies to continue his excellent form. The Shrigley Hall team of Mark Taylor(10), Alan Pengelly(12) and Alex Mansfield(13) took 4th place with a solid 83.

Good friends Ed Wilkinson(7), Roger Percival(6), Martin France(3) and Peter Atherton (11)combined well on the back nine and they were delighted with third place also with 83 points.

The early starters had the worse conditions but paradoxically they had the better scores and third out this morning was Simon Hemsley(9),Ian King(7), Gareth Bradley(+1) and John Delaney(5). The high class Bramall team had nine birdies between them as they narrowly missed out on their first win of the year.

It was Wilmslow’s Jim Caldwell(11) who took first place with his hand -picked team of Peter Griggs(18), John Kelsall(11) and Doug Barden(10) . The team were out at 8.10am and raced to the turn in 46 points. They then had to rely on experienced Caldwell to putt like Jordan Spieth on the back nine to keep their momentum and ensure a first win of the season -well played chaps!

Thanks to all players for your terrific support,
Yours in Golf, Tim
