Maxitours at super Shrigley
Huge thanks to Shrigley Hall for standing in so late in the day. The golf course was immaculate and the greens were terrific. Thanks to Golf Manager Andy- brilliant.
‘That is a great venue.’ Declared John Cross ‘My team loved it out there!’
There were clear blue skies first thing this morning before some fog rolled in during the morning tee times.
‘I’m a bit worried Tim.’ Admitted Roy Ainsworth.
‘If visibility drops to less than 130 yards I wont be able to see where my Driver lands.’
Seventeen teams enjoyed the stunning putting surfaces- how they get the greens that good in November is beyond me.
‘I’m delighted I played today – my missus wanted to go shopping and that was the other option. That was never going to happen.’ Confessed James Stringer.
That reminded me of a story from Maxitours regular Joe Kirwan a couple of years ago who told me he was dragged into Marks and Spencers for some Christmas shopping but was delighted to find a huge mirror where he could work on his backswing. He looked around the store to locate his wife only to see another bloke doing the same thing in a different mirror. Love it.
Scoring was good today as the course is absolutely no push over.
Roy Ainsworth, Dave Hanson, Robbie Blair and Tom Keeling took 3rd lace with 86 points. This was equalled by Heyrose legend Steve Blakeway playing with Neil Evans, John Cross and Dave Greenwood who take 2nd on the card play off.
Winning today with 87 points and receiving a two shot handicap reduction after an impressive recent run of results were Maxitours regulars Andy Hamlett, Steve Austin, Richard Blackwell and Gary Smith. These four are brilliant guys who play in the right spirit and have found a rich vein of form. Last year they struggled but something has really clicked over the past two months. Well played chaps.

Maxitours at wonderful Wychwood Park
A chillier day than predicted greeted Maxitours competitors at Wychwood Park. The course has lots of fantastic holes and is a proper test of golf. Possibly the toughest venue on the circuit but comments were very, very positive about this brilliantly designed track.
‘That’s a fantastic course!’ declared Lancaster’s likeable Peter Griggs.
‘Excellent championship course -really enjoyable!’ Announced Tytherington’s David More’O’Farrell who is the only Maxitours player whose name is longer than his drives.
Old Jim Heywood is a brilliant bloke. I wish I was his golf pro. Last year he went for his yearly check up with the doctor and he had shrunk an inch, the same thing just happened this year so he needs to be fitted for a new set of clubs and his waterproof trousers are now too long so he needs a new suit. If he carries on shrinking at this rate he will disappear completely in 2075. Looking on the bright side his pro will have made a fortune by then.
The course is great fun to play and doesn’t have a weak hole and is a proper Championship course. I always really enjoyed missing the cut here when I played on the Europro tour.
The long course also got the better of Dave Griffiths ‘I’m going home for a sleep.’ Was all he could mutter after his round.
Best front nine of the day was Paul Salt’s Heyrose team who were out in 45 points before hitting the wall and returning in 34 points.
Four teams shared second place with 83 points. But it was Boltons Gary Myerscough, Steve Booth, his son Jamie and John Dempsey who won the card play off to take silver.
Winning was Dentons Jim Cox(8), Andy Sandham(8), Steve Jenkinson(10) and Nick Green(8) with an impressive 85 points. These guys play in all my Winter events and last year they were hopeless and didn’t sniff a top three all season. In fact, this is their first win in over 15 years of trying! Team Captain Dave Blood was missing today after a knee operation. Expect some serious grief Dave. Well played team!
Please park in designated spots only next week at Warrington – plenty of spaces in the top car park.
Thanks Tim

Maxitours at excellent Reddish Vale
A bit of a dull, drizzly day greeted Maxitours players at Reddish Vale. The Alaster Mackenzie course was sparkling though. The fairways were still remarkably dry and the greens here are possibly the best of any greens over the Winter months in Manchester. Well done to Arron and his hard working team. Excellent.
Andy Myers is a legend and always looks after my players. Nothing is too much trouble for the likeable professional and his son Dan who is also becoming a class golfer. Dan takes out and brings in my nearest the pin markers with a smile on his face. Thanks very much.
Its Halloween tonight but Andy Slater was shaking with fear over his wedge shot into the 16th . All three of his playing partners were in the water. His knuckles turned white as he strangled any hint of feel out of his wedge and he was absolutely delighted to eventually chunk his ball onto the front edge of the green and three putt for a solid bogey.
Lucky Richard Wakefield thinned his ball through a bush on the short par three 4th hole and was about to reload before his team mates spotted a ball scuttling on to the green. He actually won the nearest the pin prize. They couldn’t believe what they had just seen.
Scoring was close once again as the course was playing long and the pins were tucked away on the excellent greens.
Late in the day the last couple of groups finished in the gloom. Ian Reece struggled to find his car in the car park it was so dark but he wasn’t bothered as he made a solid par at the last and 85 year old team mate John Lynsky chipped in for a miraculous five as the team finished in 3rd place. Mark Bex and Ian Wright were their team mates.
Martin Prescott’s Prestbury team finished in 2nd winning the card play off. Brian Leatherbarrow (12) wasn’t on the card for the first thirteen holes before playing the tough closing five holes in a very impressive -1 to help his team score 82 points. Cheshire seniors Martin Prescott and Steve Best both contributed well.
Ever-present Richard Blackwell, Steve Austin, Gary Smith and Andy Hamlet had a slow start to their season but have really hit a rich vein of form over the last month. They came home in 43 to win by one. Hamlett’s par on the final hole proving to be very valuable indeed. Well played chaps.
Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance once again today. Amazing.
Yours in golf

Maxitours at Fabulous Formby Hall
The sun shone on the 100 or so Maxitours players who travelled to Southport today.
There was a refreshing breeze keeping players on their toes but the course was really dry and this great layout was enjoyed by more.
Dave Griffiths recently went on holiday and went into the sea four times. Today he visited the water five times as the likeable Mancunion rapidly ran out of golf balls.
Lovable old Arthur McMahon has had a bad week. On Sunday he spent all morning watching his floppy haired grandson play rugby, after the match finished he went over to congratulate him and realised it was a complete stranger. His grandson was on a nearby pitch. Today he hit the wrong ball twice as his team battled to a struggling 68 points.
Jack Coleman’s teams average age was over 82 years old! They all stopped buying green bananas years ago.
‘If we don’t come back with the card send a search party for us!’ He joked. But in all fairness Jack can still play and the team finished mid table with a respectable 73 points.
Rob Norbury played today. He is an actor and used to be a sex symbol on the channel 4 programme HollyOaks and has spent plenty of time in the gym over the years honing his body. He should have been at the driving range instead. Rob hits it miles but has no idea where it is going. He takes a mid iron off every tee but smashes it miles. He was on the tough 438 yard 5th hole with two flushed 7 irons today. Impressive.
Scoring was tough on the long championship Formby golf course but Richard Blackwells team came third after a battling 86 points. Steve Austin, his son Mark and Andy Hamlett were his team mates.
Fourth place went to Legh Parks Ray Tennant, Keith ‘Chalky’ White, Steve Shaw and Paul Woods with 85 points. Jim Caldwell, Lee Charnley and the returning Bob Pickthall and Peter Griggs took 5th place after another fine performance saw them record 84 points.
Second was the Ashton -on -Mersey quartet of Peter Fildes(10) Tony Hope (15) Ben Hope(5) and Joe Crumbleholme (8). They had a best of the day 44 pionts on the tougher back nine to take 2nd on a card play off. I asked them for any funny stories for my report but they didn’t have any.
Winning today was Dentons Olympic Taekwando statistician Gary Owen(5), Alastair Holloway(17), Alan Gayle(19) and Sam Beverley(15). The wind dropped late in the day and they had a terrific 88 points to take top spot. Owen did the damage with a couple of birdies on his shot holes. Well played chaps great score.
Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance, Class.
