Maxitours at fantastic Formby Hall

The Formby Hall golf course was incredibly dry despite heavy overnight rain. Today’s Maxitours players all enjoyed the course and especially the firm well drained greens which make this such a great venue for this time of year.

‘That is a quality golf course.’ Declared wise Kevin Hart.

Before play Sam Leach, Jim Hodges, Jonny Barton and Chris Whalley told me that they have a special Maxitours birdie tree. They play most weeks and every birdie in 2024 has been recorded on the tree. I think avian flu has hit hard. There was just one birdie on the tree. Hodges was overjoyed when against all odds he added another today.

Next year they are having a birdie twig.

The Formby hotel is on the outskirts of Liverpool. There are always interesting sights as people walk past my check in desk on the way to the restaurant for breakfast. Fake tans, incredibly tight pants and perms are all definitely in fashion in Merseyside. And that’s just the blokes.

Scoring was excellent on the Championship golf course. Richard Margraves team took the early lead with a solid 80 points but this was pipped by Paul Salts Heyrose team who have found some real form at last. They had an excellent 83 points to take fifth place.

Kev Harts likeable Davyhulme team battled hard for 84 points to take 4th place. Greta to see him back in the prizes.

I always thought Martin France is known as ‘Air France’ as his drives always hit the runway. But I was assured by his team that this is definitely not the case and he is called Air because he spends most of the year on holiday trying to spend his royal mail pension. He actually did hit a few fairways today and helped his team to 84 points and 3rd place.

Prestburys Geoff Bickerton has a gold putter. You need to be a good putter to play with a gold one. Luckily for the three handicapper he is very good and he once again rolled in more than his fair share. Moby Rawthore (2) , John Owen(8) and Andy Russell(13) completed the team which finished 2nd on 85 points.

Winning today with a super 87 points was Pete Ledger(15), Graham Jackson (10) Norrie Erwin(10) and Anthony Wilson (9). They had a tremendous front nine. picking up six gross birdies between them. A professional back nine saw them home in 39 points for a three shot winning margin.

Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your support.

Results from excellent Reddish Vale

Great new event!

Eaton Golf Club added to the schedule Thursday 4th April – let me know ASAP if you wish to play – THIS WILL FILL -DON’T MISS OUT!

Vale Royal is the day before so there will be additional prizes for the best two day score overall.

Maxitours at excellent Reddish Vale

Reddish Vale was in outstanding condition for today’s event. The rainwater drains quickly into the meandering river Thame and the course has been closed for just one day. There are also incredibly just three greenkeepers at Reddish and these lads work their socks off to keep the course looking pristine. The greens are possibly the best in Manchester. Thank you.

‘They are the best greens I have played on since October ‘ Announced golf mad Lancastrian Simon Raine (4 handicap). ‘Outstanding’. This man plays more golf than me.

The doner kebab served in the clubhouse was pretty special as well.

Graham Jackson left his bag open when he walked to the 11th tee and about seven crows descended. Normally there would be pies and mars bars galore in the chunky Heyrose mans bag but he had a clear out recently. Instead the disappointed crows opened a packet of tees and ate them instead.
‘They’ve eaten my tees !’ Declared an incredulous Jackson much to everyone’s amusement.
‘They were the big orange ones as well.’

The same crows stole a banana from Gary Phillips bag thirty minutes later. They left the banana peel on the 13th fairway just to rub salt in his wounds.

Talking of food, huge thanks to Dave More O’Farrells Missus who baked me two of the nicest sausage rolls I have ever tasted. Luckily there are no crows in the clubhouse.

John Simpson had a result today. He had a terrific hole in one on the 9th to take nearest the pin, earn a bonus dozen balls and as he was in the last group everyone had left the club so he had a minimal drinks bill. Well played John.

Scoring was excellent as the course was playing long and there was a cool breeze to contend with.
Third place went to Dave Westwood, Richard Palmer, John Farnsworth and Munro Donald with a solid 83 points.
Pete Ledger, Anthony Wilson, Phil Mayers and Graham Jackson with 84 points took 2nd place despite a tee shortage.
Winning today was Heyrose’s Josh Street (+3) George Kerr (3) Tim Bessant (20) and Phil Harris(9). Paul Salt enters a team from Heyrose each week and they have had a less than successful run recently. I also forgot Phil Harris’s name this morning despite knowing him very well indeed. I must have put some fire in his belly and he chipped in for a two on the last to seal a hard fought win. Well played chaps great golf.

Thanks to everyone for supporting two events in a week. Really appreciate it. Mrs Maxwell is wearing socks with holes in after recent cancelations.

Results from cracking Conwy

Spaces at Reddish on Thursday – forecast very good and the course really is excellent.

Maxitours at cracking Conwy.

Clear blue skies greeted the early maxitours competirors who travelled to Conwy this morning.

The course is improving by the year, new patches of marron grass are being planted and the gorse is slowly being cleared. Pathways are being cut through the dunes. It is wonderful here.

The freshly cut firm greens are always a pleasure to putt on and they were first class today..

The wind was blowing in completely the wrong direction for how the course was designed. All the shot holes were down breeze and the easy holes were playing into the wind. So there were more 7 pointers and also more 1 pointers than usual. John Davies always hits his ball in the wrong direction so he was at home today.

If you think you are unlucky spare a thought for sheep farmer Richard Palmer . Just as the golfing weather improves he will be helping 300 sheep give birth. Instead of reaching in and pulling a titliest pro v1 out of the hole he will be reaching in and pulling out a baby lamb. The first ones are due on Thursday.

In todays competition there were more dead badgers by the side of the A55 than points scored by Dave Bloods team as they finished in last place with 69.

The best scores were from the morning starters who enjoyed sunshine before the wind really picked up and clouds gathered late in the day.
Five of the top six scores were all in the first few groups of the day.

Talented Jon Hudson and his Bramall Park team scored an excellent 83 points to take 5th.

Nigel Ashton, Mike Lowe, John Williams and Stuart Smith had a solid 85 points and were unlucky just to finish 4th to Geoff Bickerton, Andy Russell, Steve Booth and Danny Swarbrick who played late in the day.

Two teams scored 86 points and it went to a last six hole card play off.

Gareth Winston, John Harrop, Jack Schofield and James Beswick just missed out to Lee Charnley, Jim Caldwell, John Roome an Andrew Aherne. Both teams making the most of the early benign conditions. Well played everybody.

Thanks for your support,
See you at Reddish Vale on Thursday.

Steve Booth turned up at Reddish last week instead of Vale Royal so give him a ring if you need directions.

Tim.
