Crosland Heath cancelled

*The 2nd Algarvian Classic on 1st -5th February has expanded and I have room for two teams. Get away from damp Manchester this Winter.

Dear Maxitours player,

There is a storm forecast for Thursday. Very heavy rain and strong winds are moving in on Wednesday As there is a distance for my players to travel to Crosland we have decided to cancel. General Manager Toby has been great to deal with. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Ringway has two holes closed so the event on 23rd November will now move from Ringway to Crosland Heath. Tee times from the Ringway event will be moved to Crosland- please let me know if you cannot play.

Thanks Tim

*Maxitours Algarvian Classic 1 and 2 Full!!

I have managed to get another 2 team places for 1-5th Feb so all is not lost ! – Let me know if you are keen. I have a really nice pair (Paul Evans 20 h’cap and friend)requiring 2 players- so either a team of 4, two singles or a pair are required!

Maxitours at fabulous Formby Hall.

Formby Hall was incredibly dry for todays Maxitours event. Players couldn’t believe how playable the course was after recent rainfall and were desperate to return to this cracking Southport venue.

‘That was incredibly dry- I loved it!’ Reported golf mad Martin Humphries.

‘The greens were terrific!’ Declared Gary Neiles.

‘For me that’s the best venue of the year.’ Announced an impressed Harvey Mattinson.

Steve Mattinson wasn’t playing today but came along to give support and advice to his brother Harvey and his team in the hope that it would improve their average performances. After 7 holes he walked in, had a nice lunch, drank a beer and found a nice corner to forget about the golf and had a nice snooze. The team actually came home with a solid back nine and a better than usual mid table finish.

Jim Rymer gets a mention as he finished his round with the same ball he started with. Probably a first for the likeable retired lawyer. Mrs Maxwell played today and she was happily getting through my stock of taylor made balls on the ‘watery’ back nine. In order to avoid an argument I ‘must’ mention that she had a number of great holes as well.

Taking the early lead was Andy Taylor and his team with 85 points which was matched by Paul Fells team who had a very strong front nine but then they all came home in an ambulance.

Stamfords Richard Margrave, Paul Traynor, Mike Grainger and Steve Moores played great for seventeen holes but could only manage 2 points on the closing downwind par 5! They were inconsolable after their 86 points just missed out.

Taking the honours were regulars Jim Clarke, Graham Jackson, Pete Ledger and Dave Tobutt with 87 points. They had a terrific 47 points on the front nine as Graham ‘the pie’ Jackson had the round of his life. The tougher back nine saw them come home in 40 to narrowly win. Well played chaps.

Thanks to all players for your brilliant support,

Tim

Maxitours at super Stockport

Glorious sunshine, not a breath of wind and a golf course of the very highest quality greeted Maxitours competitors at Stockport today.

Dan in the pro shop deserves a special mention, this likeable young pro has a bright future and cannot do enough to help. Respected head pro Jamie Garner can be very proud.

The catering was up to the usual high standard and plenty of pints were enjoyed in the friendly Stockport bar.

Compliments about the golf course rained in throughout the day. Well done to the green keeping team – outstanding presentation.

Eleven handicapper Pete Keena shocked the golfing world with four birdies today after his putter caught fire on the smooth Stockport greens. If he manages to corner you and you have a spare half -hour he will happily talk you through each one of them. He normally goes home pretty sharpish but was very chatty in the clubhouse after play today. As the Stockport barmaid pulled the shutter down late tonight after a busy day Pete could be seen asking her:

‘Have you heard about my birdie on the 18th?’

If you think that there is nothing worse than when your golf trolley stops working after nine holes. Ask Steve Heywood. His trolley stopped working on the first fairway. He will sleep very well tonight.

Tom Broadhead has never won nearest the pin but he hit his tee shot well within the marker on the 16th hole. Unfortunately, he was teeing off on the thirteenth hole.

Scoring was incredibly tight at the top of the leaderboard with Hazel Grove lawyer Simon Ashton and his team taking 4th with 85 points Callaway rep Tom Gradwell is a class player (2) and he led his team also from Hazel Grove into 3rd place on the card play off.

Also on 85 points were Neale Laurent , John Harrop, and husband and wife John and Sally Lester. They took second after a solid back nine. Sallys’ birdie on the 11th was the difference. Well played guys and girl.

There is more chance England winning the rugby world cup than Dave Carters team winning at Stockport but win it they did. A terrific 46 point haul on the back nine saw them win by three shots. Carter had an impressive three 2’s on his card which always helps. Dave Shafer (14) Pete Johnson (13) and Ben Lester (11) completed the team.

Lester is not a common name but there were three of them in the top two teams. Spooky.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance. Incredible.

*Room for 2 teams at Stockport on Monday -great forecast.

Maxitours at Reddish Vale

Reddish Vale is probably the best draining course in Manchester and when other local courses were closed todays surprisingly firm fairways and smooth greens were enjoyed by everyone.

‘What a cracker!’ Put me down for the Reddish event this Winter – that course is so dry.’ Declared an amazed Phil Dickens.

‘That was incredible, pass on my thanks to the green keeper- the course was superb.’ Praised likeable Scot Brian Fisher.

‘Alaster Mackenzie was on form when he designed this place -its great!’ Declared Stan Daniels.

Well done to everyone at Reddish.

The German bar manager is called ‘Barbell’ and her hospitality is second to one. She was brilliant today Thanks Barbell.

Paul Price is a great bloke. He missed a tiddler a couple of weeks ago to cost his team a bag towel – he bought four off me today in a desperate attempt to stifle the abuse he has had ever since.

We had possibly the first professor ever to compete in Maxitours today. We were graced to have the presence of an incredibly intelligent chap called Martin Humphries. Before some of you fall off your chair in disbelief there were two Martin Humphries playing today. The ever-present lovable regular playing Martin Humphries isn’t a professor. Or if he is, he is doing a very good job disguising it.

Scoring was once again very close at the top of the leaderboard. Bramall Parks Jon Hudson, Rob Blain, Geoff Alsop and Mark Batley posted an 83 early in the day to take the lead over another early starting team – Neale Laurent and his Dukinfield men. This was eventually good enough for 2nd place with big heated Hudsons classy par at the last proving to be very valuable.

Well liked Antrobus steward Dave Buckley and Jim Caldwell’s team were close behind on 82

Late in the day Pete Norbury (17) Andy Wilde (16) Dave Sarsfield(14) and Dave Rhodes(13) had a strong finish to take first prize. They collected six points, then seven, then six on holes 14 to 16 to move into contention. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your tremendous support.
