DO NOT FORGET YOUR SUNCREAM!!!

Maxitours at brilliant Helsby

Helsby was in excellent condition for todays Maxitours event. There was little sign of yesterdays horrific weather – the green keepers did a magical job mowing their greens and fairways first thing this morning for us. Thank you very much.

Rob behind the bar and Julie who single handedly served over 100 golfers were both fantastic- what a club!

John Sherrington is back from the Masters. As I predicted 2 weeks ago he is desperate to tell everyone about it but knows he will be assassinated in my report. Please can everyone completely ignore him if he starts telling any Augusta stories.

Kevin Hart is working hard at his putting in recent weeks and he was delighted to hit his 4th putt straight into the middle of the hole on the tricky 12th green. Excellent work Kev.

The scoring was very close indeed as breezy conditions and a well designed golf course got the better of the majority of teams. The sunny conditions were also a shock to the system for many players.

A record low score of just 78 was leading for most of the day.

‘I really can’t believe that a score of only 78 is winning!’ Said an exasperated John Farnsworth when he handed his card in.

‘I can!’ Chipped in his long suffering team mate Mick Mahon ‘ it’s 18 shots better than our score.’

Three teams shared 78 points.

Jim Caldwells Wilmslow team finished 4th on the card play off.

Poulton Parks quartet of Paul Roberts, Mike Hall, Phil Johnson and Neil Birchall also scored 78 with a superior back nine to take 3rd . They all arrived together in a huge coach and bonded on the journey. I have no idea why they needed a huge coach but it seemed to do the trick.

Winning the play off was the team of Delamere Forests Roger Percival , Cheshire senior Martin France, Pete the pie eater Atherton and Ed Wilkinson. The quartet have been quiet recently. Team Captain Ed normally only smiles when he is on his 3rd pint in the bar but he was delighted with second place. This man can putt.

Winning today was Mick Jones(8), Dan Moss(4), Darren Wilkinson(10) and Dave Ashworth(4) from Hazel Grove with just 79 points. They went quiet after picking up just 2 points on the 14th and were shocked and delighted to win with such a low score.

‘We love Maxitours – so many nice players and a score of 79 winning a team of 4 event shows what great integrity your players have.’

Thanks for your words Mick, Very well played.

Thanks to everyone for your attendance today. Brilliant.

Yours in golf,

Tim

Maxitours at Super Stockport

The Stockport Golf Course keeps getting better and better.

The friendliest staff, the best food, wonderful greens and lovely members all combine to make this a favourite course of mine.

Greenkeepers hate this week because of ‘Augusta syndrome’ when club members wonder why their golf course isn’t playing exactly like the masterpiece in Georgia which has over 50 green keepers working intensively for several weeks in perfect growing conditions. There will be no Augusta syndrome at Stockport as the course was amazing. Big thanks to the greens staff.

Terry Friday played today. The last time he played five years ago I made a Robinson Crusoe reference in my write up. Today he told me he loves his surname and is glad he wasn’t called Monday because everyone loves a Friday. Nice line Terry.

The green staff were quietly working hard today but still using their knowledge and keeping well out of the way of our players golf shots. All of our players except Gary Butler that is. He managed to ‘wang’ his tee shot left on the 14th narrowly missing the head greenkeeper and hitting his tractor tyre.
‘It’s always good to keep these lads on their toes’ He explained in the bar afterwards.

The scoring was really tough on the fast greens and back tees. In fact the average score of 73 was as bad as we have seen all year.

A few team managers did an Antonio Conte and tried to throw their players under the bus:
‘How is Martin playing?’ I asked Fred Rogers ‘I don’t even know why we bring him.’ He sighed.
‘How did Brian Ankers play?’ I enquired to Roy Ainsworth. ‘He struggled again today- I can still throw a piano further than he hits it’.
‘Have you got a better team next week at Helsby?’ I added. ‘No, it’s the same old rubbish’ I’d do better dragging someone off the street’

Simon Poucher is a great bloke. He is known as Aquaman to his golfing friends as he loves hitting his ball in the water. Simon enjoys Stockport as there is not too much water but there are plenty of trees. I only saw him hitting a couple of shots today but they both ricocheted off timber. His team mates have now started calling him Tarzan.

A card play off decided 3rd and 4th place with Paul Yearsleys back nine of 45 matching Jim Caldwell however a back six card play off saw Pauls team victorious.

The top two spots were also decided on the back nine with Gary Leeks Moor Hall team narrowly beaten by Prestbury’s Steve Hall(13), Phil Singh(10), Martin Prescot(6) and Mike Clewley(14) who came home in 45. These guys are usually hopeless but they played great today and enjoyed the superfast greens when others were struggling. Very popular winners indeed.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance. Incredible.

Maxitours at Brilliant Vale Royal

Room at leafy Helsby on 13th April team of 4 and Knutsford Singles 28th April

Maxitours at brilliant Vale Royal

Maxitours visited Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club today and as well as having plenty of well struck Pro V1s whizzing overhead there were compliments galore flying around.
The sand-based course was incredibly dry when other top Cheshire courses have been shut. The fairways were firm and fast and the greens were:
‘Superb’ According to Rob Platt and many others.

‘The Greens were the best this year!’ Declared Gary Smith after three putting less than usual.
‘That’s the first course I’ve played this year and had some real run on the fairways! Brilliant course.’ Announced an impressed Andy Taylor.

The catering is also now gaining a fine reputation and it was a pleasure to sample the menu more than once. Huge thanks to Ian Embury and his friendly team.

Crazy Welshman Dave Cooper wanted to pick up a prize today. He had a good result a few weeks ago.
‘I’ve got everything I need golf related – is their anything else I can have instead?’ He asked. I will try and fit a few toasters and cuddly toys in my car ready for next weeks event so you can have a good look around Dave to see if anything catches your eye.

Frank Harcastle had his expensive new Ping chipper out today for the first time. Apparently, they are the new answer to everyone’s chipping problems.
‘Did you chip well today?’ I asked him after his round.
‘No, absolutely hopeless. But I’ll try anything to improve my golf. I think I’ve tried every gadget you can think of and I am looking forward to trying a few more. Just in case there is something out there I may missed…….’
Good luck Frank.

Keith Shale said he played the best golf of his undistinguished career as he helped his team of Tony Hereford, Pete Van Boyd and Barry Caldwell into 4th place with 88 points.

John Dickenson is a lovely bloke and its great to see him getting back to his best after a recent illness. His team carded 88 points late in the day to take 3rd place.

This was matched by the popular Roger Percival team who had a mediocre front nine of 39 points before setting fire to the back nine and returning in 49.
They call team mate Ian Quirk(1) ‘baking powder’ because he hits the ball so hard it just keeps rising. The big hitting one-handicapper made an eagle two after driving the par four 11th hole. Pete Atherton(8) the 4th member of the team prefers eating cakes but he had three birdies on his own.

Taking first prize was Gary Neiles(6), John Longworth(11), Richard(7) and Henry (6)Melrose. These guys play at Sandiway which is only a stone’s throw from the 7th tee and they made the most of local knowledge to master the tricky Vale Royal greens as they scored 90 points to earn a first win of the season. Well played chaps, great golf.

Richard Dueur sells 19,500 tons of peanut butter each year. He crunched his tee shot to five feet on the 10th to win nearest the pin.

Thanks for your wonderful support, Tim

Maxitours at pristine Prestatyn

Prestatyn was in great condition for today’s event. The greens were possibly the fastest we have played on this Winter/Spring and they were rolling superbly. Prestatyn is a really natural links course and has a rugged beauty. I love it here.
The back nine has a stretch of four tough holes to finish followed by a birdieable 18th hole. It’s a great challenge.

‘I’m seriously impressed!’ Reported retired pharmacist Richard Wakefield. ‘This place is now a premier golf course and should definitely be on the Maxitours rota!’
We are already booked in for next year Richard.

John Bradbury is a lovely boke but he had a bad day. His team narrowly missed out on a prize with a 7th place finish. He also lost his car keys. His loving wife had to drive over to Prestatyn from Heyrose to give him his spare set. I bet that went down well. If that was not enough as I was setting off home the pro collared me- ‘Any idea who has left his clubs on the buggy?’
Yep I know just the man……

If John Bradbury had a bad day Keith Shale had a cracker. I have never seen a man so happy to be reunited with his golf mat. He left it at last weeks event but thought it was gone forever.
‘Wow that’s a miracle!’ He declared when I gave it to him after it was handed in.
His team finished 4th and Shale made a crucial par on the last. Another miracle. Well played Keith.

Third place went to the Hazel Grove barrister Simon Ashton(7), Mick Jones(8), Iain Cole(5) and Mark Cookson(5).

Taking second was Sandiways Gary Neiles(5), Richard Melrose(5), Gavin Connor(8)and Paul Hurst(11) with a terrific 83 points, Neiles was one over par and credited a recent putting lesson for his improved form.
Winning again was Wilmslows in form Jim Caldwell(6) who won for a second consecutive week despite a handicap cut. They were out in the toughest conditions and recorded an exceptional 85 points. Lee Charnley(5) Don Bailey(7) and Andrew Aherne(9) were his on form team mates. Well played chaps.

Full results from Formby

Maxitours at fabulous Formby

Maxitours visited Formby Hall Championship golf course and all my players enjoyed the dry warm conditions. The course was excellent considering we are in late March when most golf courses are notoriously looking tired and in need of some growth. Indeed, many courses in Cheshire were closed today after recent monsoons.

The course has held some big events and the last time I played here was in a European Challenge Tour event in 1998. My Dad caddied for me and there were hundreds of people following me around. To be perfectly honest there was an old man and a dog following me around but playing in the group behind was Justin Rose who had nearly won the Open as an amateur down the road the previous year. The scousers had come out in force to follow their man. He narrowly beat me by 16 shots if anyone is remotely interested.

I set my registration desk up at the entrance to the bar and restaurant and had the shock of my life when a slightly luminous-orange skinned brunette with very plump lips and her blond pal who was an even brighter shade of orange and had even bigger lips came over and told me that their room number was one hundred and eleven. I nearly fell off my chair. It took me a few seconds to realise that they were trying to check-in for breakfast.

Scoring was tough on this Championship golf course. The wind picked up on the back nine and the course really showed its teeth.

It was good to see Richard Blackwell back playing Maxitours after a recent boozy trip to Dubai. He had a huge bandage on his hand but that didn’t stop the golf mad businessman from teeing up today. He fell over while holding a glass of red wine and cut himself. ‘It cost me £500 to get stitched up -not too bad really as it works out than less than £20 a stitch!’ Said the quick minded and extremely positive New Mills man. His team finished 7th.

The breeze didn’t faze Mike Hill from Bramall Park who had his first ever hole in one today with a well struck 6 iron on the sixth hole- brilliant. It helped his team into 4th place.

Stamfords Steve Moores(6), Paul Traynor(5), Rick Margreave(7) and Ian Fearns(14) were out last in the wind and they played superbly to finish in 3rd place.

Late in the day Birchwood Captain Dave Monk, retired Barry Wilson, eighty year old John Lynsky (who looks about sixty), and Simon Wilkinson (looks eighty but is only sixty) scored 88 points to narrowly miss out. Retired coach driver Wilson was on fire scoring a career best 4 over on this proper golf course. They were happy to finish second.

Jim Caldwell(9) was out early and he played alongside John Sherrington(12) who seems like a really nice bloke. I have only seen John three times at the local driving range and he is always very friendly but each time he has told me that he is going to the Masters. When he checked in today he told me that he was off to the Masters next week. I can’t wait until he gets home so he can tell me all about it… (I’m only jealous.) John knocked in five huge putts to give his team an early lead. Peter Griggs(11) and John Roome(15) completed the quartet. Well played chaps.

Thanks for your 100% attendance everyone. Class.
