Maxitours at fabulous Vale Royal

Maxitours players enjoyed a terrific day at Vale Royal. The forecast was poor but only the very early and very late starters enjoyed a couple of refreshing Spring showers.

The course was in excellent condition for March and it continues to mature into a very fine test of golf. Vale Royal is now firmly recognised as one of Cheshire’s best courses.

Twelve handicapper Martin Humphries told me that he had mastered the course and was two under par for his round through thirteen holes but the team only finished mid table.
‘If I had a decent team instead of these jokers I would have walked it.’
He told me in strictest confidence as he handed his card in.

Scoring was incredibly close as thirteen teams finished within 4 shots of the lead. The best of the scores were from teams in the middle of the field who played in the warmer conditions.

There were also rumours that the green keeper had an argument with his wife this morning as the pin position on the 16th was ‘tricky’. Even Ian Gemmell managed to three putt and he is known as the Brad Faxon of Stockport. The rest of his team four putted.

Stuart Smith (7) Paul Leek (18) Gary Leek (14) and Steve Smith(10) played superbly to take 2nd with 88 points. A classy birdie on the 16th from Gary when other teams were dropping shots really helped.

Winning with a better closing nine holes – helped by picking up seven points on the 15th and a crucial net eagle on the closing hole from Steve Barker(13) was the Silkstone team of Rob Platt(5), John Broomhead(5) and Tim Barstow(18). These brilliant lads come over the Pennines to play Maxitours about five times each year but more often than not they return home to feed their whippets empty handed. A great team effort saw the strange talking team earn a maiden victory. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance.
Yours in golf,
Tim

Maxitours Cheshire Classic Results from Mottram Hall and Prestbury

‘This event could well be the highlight of my golfing year.’ Praised nice guy Peter Maher. ‘Two great courses and fantastic weather!’

Thanks to everyone for supporting the event, I really hope you had a terrific tournament.

Mottram Hall is now a qualifying venue for the European Tour and is a terrific test of golf. The back nine is stunning and in the 13th and 17th holes it has two of the toughest holes in Cheshire. There were only two teams in the whole field who scored more points on the back nine than the front.

Tournament leader Ian Hassall was all of a dither before his final round. He wanted some lunch and was told that food was available in the main hotel.

‘Where is the hotel?’ He asked.

‘It’s that huge building behind you.’ Replied his partner.

Two of the worst golfers in Maxitours history won nearest the pin. Jonny Barton and John Farnsworth were the unlikely winners. Brilliant!

Winning today was Jim Caldwell’s team with 85 points narrowly beating Paul Fell and Paul Thompson’s team on the back 6 holes. Colin Roberts’ Alsager team took 4th place.

In the overall competition Gary Allis (12 shots) Ian Hassall (16) Rob Sutton (18) and Mark Taylor (19) managed to hang on to take first place with a solid 83 today to add to their super 95 points yesterday. They beat Paul Fells team by 2 shots and Jim Caldwell’s team by 6points. Well played chaps great golf.

Thanks for the 100% attendance once again and your superb etiquette, I love running these events.

Maxitours at Perfect Prestbury

*Please note Stockport 4th April is a team of 4 event (was advertised as pairs)*
Space at these terrific venues!
Teams of 4 at Vale Royal 30th March , Stockport 4th April and Llangollen 11th April !!

First day of the Maxitours Cheshire Classic at Prestbury

Another amazing days golf was enjoyed by Maxitours players at Prestbury Golf Club.
Intelligent Mike Lowe declared: ‘That is a proper golf course!’
Simon Raines announced: ‘It has been a long time since I played Prestbury but t is even better than I remembered!’
‘Superb.’ Beamed Steve Blakeway
‘Amazing course.’ Stated Peter Maher.

I enjoyed working at this great club for a couple of years in the early 1990’s and the members were terrific with me. I still really love visiting here. The greens were always excellent but ‘not at their best until May.’ Head Green keeper Mark Crossley has changed all that and the greens are pure and playable for 12 months of the year. Brilliant.
Even Frank Hindle struggled to think of anything to complain today about which is a first.

Mark Saxon was excited about his first big event of the season but he made the schoolboy error of cleaning his clubs, polishing his shoes, putting on a fresh leather glove and he even washed his bag towel. He was guaranteed to struggle.

Perfectionist Gary Greer and his team were also excited and they arrived 3 ½ hours before their tee time in order to be prepare properly. They had so much time on their hands they decided to have a look at the views over the Edge in Alderley and arrived back still two and a half hours before their allocated time and headed to the range. They teed off at just after one and looked absolutely shattered.

The perfect conditions meant scoring was excellent. Even John Webb (Webby) had a two on the 8th.

Birchwood legend Steve Aspinall, Ken Booth, Graham Wilkinson and John Fitzsimmons are in 4th place with 89 points. Paul Fells Carden park team are in 2nd place alongside the Dukinfield quartet led by Paul Butler with 90 points.

Late in the day Wolstantons’ Gary Ellis, Ian Hassall, Robert Sutton and Mark Taylor had a wonderful 95 points. A huge cheer erupted as chunky Ian Hassall holed his approach on the last as the team picked up seven points. ‘Everything went right today!’

There is everything to play for tomorrow and the famous Mottram Hall back nine should sort the men out from the boys.

Janet Heywood showed the men how to do it on the 17th hole. As the big hitters were missing the green with a wedge Janet used her educated hands to caress her driver to within a foot of the hole to win nearest the pin. Excellent.

Sleep well everybody.

Yours in golf,
Tim

Results from fabulous Formby Hall

Spaces for teams or 1 or 2 players in the Cheshire Classic at Prestbury and Mottram Hall next week!!!!!!

I visited Prestbury last week and the course was class!!

Maxitours at fabulous Formby Hall

Glorious blue skies and a lovely sea breeze were the rewards for well over 100 Maxitours competitors who travelled to the Merseyside coast today.

Formby Hall was described as ‘magnificent’ by more than a few players today. I have to say that the greens and surrounds looked excellent.

The course is a true championship venue and has hosted a number of professional events. I played in a challenge tour event here in 1998 when a fresh-faced Justin Rose narrowly pipped me by 24 shots.

Thanks to Leighton Williams and all the team. The food in the clubhouse was excellent.

The only issue with today’s event was the price of fuel. The local Tesco’s was over £1.79 a litre making Formby the only place in Britain more expensive than Knutsford.

If you had a bad round today try and remember that things could be a lot worse -you could be going to Goodison with the Jim Rymer team for example. They didn’t look too confident as they headed to Everton to watch their favourite team take on Newcastle. Lambs to the slaughter.

Dave Haycocks was all over the place today. They call him the major because he plays military golf – left, right, left, right. He hit his approach shot into room 116 as he played the 18th.

Highlight of the day was seeing John Dickenson after his recent illness. Great to see him looking so well -he will be back playing very soon.

The wind dropped a little late in the day and scoring improved noticeably.

Sandiways Gary Neiles and his Cheshire set took 4th place with 83 points.

Dave Goodwin (who is famous for only smiling when he has wind) was once again looking less miserable than normal as his team took 3rd place. Brothers Ian and Dave Snape and Dave Greenwood completed the team.

Second place went to Denton’s Tony Grinnell, Alistair Holloway, Knutsford’s Tony Taylor and Formby Hall’s Phil Woolem. The team were assembled at the last minute and they all gelled wonderfully.

First place went to the popular figure of Martin Humphries(8). He teamed up with fellow Dean Wood members Paul Webb(20), Andy Haswell(plus 3) and the most successful female in Maxitours history- Joyce ‘pocket rocket’Larkin (17). Despite dropping a shot into the wind at the last they won by a single point with a great score of 86.

Great golf, well played!

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance.
