My wife Suzy kindly stepped in for me this morning whilst I was playing. She really enjoyed meeting everyone. I took over at 2pm . If I had a penny for everyone who said I am fighting above my weight I would have exactly 7 pence more than I won in my event this morning.

The Romiley golf course was enjoyed by everyone- it is a really underrated golf course and is once again becoming firmly recognised as a top ten course in Cheshire.

‘Those fairways were like carpets!’ Reported well-travelled and highly respected Russ Sollitt. ‘And the greens were superb also.’ He added.

Thanks to all the staff who looked after us today – you were excellent. Clubhouse manager/company secretary Rachel is brilliant to deal with and the Club has a really friendly warm atmosphere.

I used to coach the Head Pro Graham Drabble when he was a junior. He used to love his golf and if I told him to jump into a river to improve his swing he would’ve done it. It is great to see his reputation growing as he becomes top club pro and excellent coach.

Tony Hope is a lovely fella from the St Helens area. There is lots of chemical factories around there and a few studies suggest this has an impact of this on the local population. Tony went to the bar after his round and asked his team mate what flavour crisps he would like:

‘Do you want onion and cheese or vinegar and salt? ‘

Say no more.

In todays event Tom Faulkner had shot of the day when he holed his approach shot and eagled the tough 4th hole.

Scoring was close throughout the day and it was James Smith, Barry Caldwell, John Lee and Ray Tennant who were leaders in the clubhouse on 82 points. They haven’t featured in the prizes for months. Even Ray Tennant was smiling.

Winning today also after a very barren Summer was the Prestbury team of Geoff Bickerton, Mark Richardson, Steve Best and Steve Booth. They were on fire and won by an impressive 4 shots. Richardson is a cool customer and appeared on Dragons Den a few years ago. The dragons made him an offer but he turned them down. Bickerton had begged him to play in his team and this was an offer too good to refuse. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance today. Incredible.

Results from Excellent Lymm

Room for 1 team at Romiley next Tuesday.

Maxitours at Lymm

Lymm golf course just keeps getting better and better. Reports from all players were excellent as the pure Lymm greens were the talk of the clubhouse. Congratulations to new head green keeper Rob Cooper who is doing a fine job. Chair of green Andrew Cox is incredibly pround.

It is also great to catch up with head pro Steve McCarthy and his assistant Fizz. They are the heartbeat of this club and are loved by all.

The upper part of the course is raised as it was built on the soil taken out of the Manchester ship canal and this part always plays firm and fast. The contrast between the lusher lower holes is excellent and makes for a very interesting test of golf.

Never lend Paul Ashley your golf shoes. Pete Keena had a two week-old pair he had just worn in and he kindly lent them to his playing partner. Paul disappeared after attempting an optimistic wedge shot from the ditch at the last. When he reappeared, he looked like a drowned rat. Pete’s shoes were black.

Chris Hoesli from Huddersfield played today. He loved coming back to the Club where he was the first ever junior captain in 1975. His name sits proudly on the honours board. As a nice touch today he wore the same schoolboy shorts he wore 50 years ago.

In todays event scoring was close. Wychwoods Paul Price, Pete Keena, Nigel Edwards and soggy Paul Ashley were 4th on 86 pts pipped by Clitheroe Seniors Simon Raine, Roland Horridge, Philip Cort and Denis Greenup.

Gary Neiles is still waiting for a win. His team of Martyn Molyneaux, Gavin Connor and John Longworth were leading form much of the day with 87 points before late in the day Hazel Grove’s Dave Stewardson(8), Dave Cain(8), Steve Todd(11) and Mark Redfern(5) beat them on a card play off with 45 points on their closing nine holes. Excellent.

Thanks to Matt for running my day so efficiently before I took over late in the day.

Yours in golf

Maxitours at Brilliant Bromborough

Maxitours at brilliant Bromborough

Perfect golfing conditions on a near perfect golf course was the reward for Maxitours players at Bromborough this afternoon.

There was a fresh ‘sea’ breeze for most of the day as you are never too far away from the coast when you play on the Wirral.

The report is shorter than usual as I am luckily booked to go out with Mrs Maxwell this evening.

Another lucky man is John Cross who recorded the first hole in one of his career after a superb rescue club found the bottom of the cup. He was so overcome with emotion in the bar after his round he forgot to buy me a drink.

Stuart Blake took nearest the pin on the 10th . He was in the first group of the day and nobody could beat the good looking Geordies wonderful shot throughout the day.

Scoring was close and possibly the toughest back nine in Cheshire took its toll on a number of teams. Sam Leach and his lovable Lymm team had 48 points on the front nine but could only manage 35 on the dreaded back nine. They are reminiscent of Scottie Scheffler as it is very difficult to read how they have played. They still look happy when they play average, bad or terrible.

Four teams shared second place on 84 points. The Eaton team of Malcolm Sibson, John Jones, Jonty Little and posh sounding Justin Rice Jones eventually have a podium finish to take 3rd. Winning the card play off to take 2nd was Bramhall’s Ian King , Andy Dean, Andy Halden and Neil Ashton.

But the real cinderella story was John Cross. Not only a hole in one but a vital one at that! Playing alongside Phil Dickens, Neil Evans and Lewis Marland they took victory by a single shot. Superb.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance once again today. Yours in golf,

Tim

Results from cool but classy Cavendish

Not only did Mike Lowe lose five balls today he also lost his Scotty Cameron headcover – let me know if you found it please.

Maxitours at Cool but classy Cavendish

What a golf course this is!

We are blessed to have Cavendish Golf Club on our doorstep with its quality and unrivalled history but the tough conditions saw this course get the better of most of my players today.

Pete Newey is very positive. ‘I don’t like it when it is too hot. It was quite pleasant in the cold rain today and when it stopped raining the breeze turned into a slight gale to dry me off.’ That’s the spirit Pete you could start writing the report for me.

Paul Simpson is another positive man who is good to be around when the going gets tough.
‘I loved it out there. What a great design by Alastair Mackenzie – he really knew what he was doing. I enjoyed every minute and couldn’t stop smiling all day.’

Cavendish has a young professional called George Bloor and he has just qualified to play in the Open at Portrush. Half of Cavendish Golf Club is currently over in Ireland supporting him.
What an achievement – his Dad is at the Club a lot and must be a very proud man! Everyone speaks highly of George. Incredibly he is playing a practice round with Scottie Scheffler today. We’ve all been in golf’s gutters at times but stories like this keep our dreams alive. Good luck George.

Bob Kelsall plays most weeks and I thought I knew him well. He looks like quite an ordinary bloke to me but today I discovered that he used to be a professional cricketer for Notts. He once scored 132 and took 8 wickets in a day. He played alongside the great Gary Sobers and was good mates with him. Very impressive Bob!

Peter Maher loves his golf and he was a decent ballroom dancer in his younger days. He has had a great golfing season this year and puts it down to his new mindset after reading a few psychology books.
‘I didn’t worry about my feet when I was dancing, I just listened to the music.’ He educated me.
‘Now I don’t think about my swing I just do a little dance and let the ball fly to the target.’
Love it Pete!

Paul Woods told me that if I wanted any ammunition for my report his playing partner Barry Bateman was in the ‘Railway Children’ when he was a lot younger. I spent half an hour researching Jenny Agutter etc. When I interviewed Barry after his round for more information he wasn’t even born when The Railway children was filmed. He was in the pop group called ‘The Railway Children’ -their biggest song peaked at 26 in the pop charts.

In todays event Andie Frazer(14) Colin Roberts(20), Steve Jones(11) and Andy Williamson played their front nine this morning in the dry and posted a stunning 84 points. The team had an outward 44 points and were hanging in there over the closing holes. This was always going to be tough to beat and so it proved.

Steve Austin, Richard Blackwell, John Hilton and Gary Smith played in the worst of the mid-afternoon weather and had an incredible 82 points to take a much-deserved 2nd place.

Third place went to Wychwood good guys Paul Price, Matt Cheffins, Ian Snape and Pete Keena who battled their way to 78 points.

Paul Browns vastly improving Sale team took 4th with 77 points.

Thanks to everyone for showing your class and turning up. What a group we have. Only 2 cancellations despite the dodgy forecast. Brilliant.
