The Raa Putter Classic at Vale Royal Abbey.

A mixture of showers and sunshine greeted the 108 Maxitours competitors at the extremely popular Vale Royal venue. Once again the course was presented in immaculate condition, many thanks to owner Steve Graham and his very professional team.

Manchester United legends Stuart Pearson and Frank Stapleton were in the second group to tee off. Both players graced the Old Trafford turf for many years and on their front nine they were gracing Vale Royals beautiful fairways, especially when Poncho Pearson birdied the 8th and 9th for a 22 point haul. Unfortunately old cruciate, metatarsil and hamstring injuries saw them fade away on the back nine.

Roy Bramwell had a member of his team cry off late in the day ‘Tim, I was so desperate for a partner I had to invite the wife, I’ve really been scraping the bottom of the barrel’ said happily married Roy . Attractive Heidi showed him who is the boss as she easily outscored her husband.

Martin Worthington entered the 2’s sweep but found the par threes difficult today so he decided to make a 2 on the par 5 fifteenth to record the first albatross in Maxitours history! Well done Martin.

Last weeks winners Pete Holmes and Mark Breiley set the early pace with 44 points in the calmer morning conditions and were happy to have a score which they felt should finish in the top ten.

This score was challenged by other early morning starters Liam Kindon and Dave Wilson and also Bramalls Joe Kirwan and Mike Spencer who had 43 points.

The wind picked up in the afternoon and the temperature dropped, scoring deteriorated and Holmes and Breiley who had waited three years for a win had recorded a remarkable double. ‘not even Barcelona have retained the Champions league yet we have won back to back Maxitours –what an achievement’ said a delighted Breiley.

Many thanks to Roy from Raa putters for sponsoring todays event. Local golfing legend Jimmy Murphy thanked the putter for turning his year around when he made the cut in the Seniors British Open ‘you cant miss from inside 6 feet’ is Murphys verdict on the putter. www.raaputters.co.uk

Many thanks to all competitors for your continued support, Tim
