‘The Cleveland Classic’ at The Mere
The Mere was presented in tremendous condition for todays latest Maxitours event. The emerald striped fairways were lush but incredibly dry despite recent heavy rain and the April greens were really excellent, many thanks to Head Greenkeeper Gwen and his hard working team.
The golf bar was also in excellent condition due to a recent full refurbishment and the Mere is now recognised as possibly the premier golf location in the North. Paul Taylor has a fully refurbished premier golf swing and this is also starting to pay dividends as he moved out of his regular bottom three position and was delighted with a joint 21st placing.
The food at Mere is always first class and the tasty bacon sandwiches were served this morning by an incredibly attractive waitress. Alan Clough kept shaking his head for some reason and commented on more than one occasion about the quality of the baps.
It is rumoured that many of the Mere Cheshire set clientele regularly use botox and other age reducing techniques to make themselves look younger and more attractive. Baby face assassin Marcus Kaye has no such worries and he teamed up with Phil Davies to finish in 7th spot with 41 points.
I like to ensure everybody leaves my events happy however Paul Crisp had a very upsetting day at ‘The Mere’ today. On the course he resembled a short legged Lee Westward as he missed several short putts to lose out on first place by just two shots. On completion of his round his day went from bad to worse when he wasn’t able to buy his usual peanuts from behind the bar, ‘you only do vegetable crisps?!’ exclaimed the devastated Chorlton man.
Back on the course John Webb and the larger than life Dave Madely (who kindly sponsored me for many years in my younger days) finished in fourth spot after an excellent 42 point haul, Richard Palmer and Declan Fitzhenry matched that score with a better back nine and were delighted to claim third spot.
Ex Manchester United keeper Jeff Wealands paired up with ex- Chorlton Albion star Pete McManus who birdied the 2nd and 7th holes as they racked up a terrific 43 points to finish second. This matched Andy Bradley and Mark Graingers score however talented 2 handicap Grainger finished with two excellent birdies to close out the back nine to record his first Maxitours victory.
Many thanks to John Gallagher from Srixon/Cleveland for his terrific support of Maxitours at Mere. Thanks also to his stunning wife Karen who is Mere’s brilliant Golf Coordinator.
Thank you to all players for your support today, Tim
