Maxitours at Stockport Golf Club
Maxitours players enjoyed dry, storm free golf at one of Cheshire ’s finest courses today. Stockport Golf Club was in excellent condition considering some incredibly heavy overnight rain and many thanks must go to the wonderful green keeper and Secretary for making us feel so welcome and preparing the course to such a high standard.
Joe Armitt celebrated the first day of the winter Olympics by wearing one of the most ridiculous bobble hats seen in the seven years history of Maxitours. Pete Holmes also got into the Olympic mood as his golf went ‘Rapidly Downhill’ on the back nine and he finished joint last playing alongside Derek Payne.
As I happily practiced hitting fat wedge shots on the chipping green close to the 13th tee it was very interesting to watch the great variety of swings adopted by Maxitours players;
Top sportsmen Stuart Pearson and Frank Stapleton had strong athletic moves through the ball. Ian King who buys and sells oil for a living is developing a very fluid motion. Top musician Phil Ashworth has tremendous rhythm and builder Iain Bartholomew’s swing is based on very solid foundations. Jimmy O’Reilly owns a fleet of black cabs and his playing partners called out Taxi! on several occasions as his ball whizzed passed the hole on the slick greens. I am not sure what Michael McCurdy does for a living but if he is ever short of work I will recommend him to my local flooring shop which currently has a vacancy for a carpet beater.
Richard Palmer (known as Arnold to his pals) was delighted to hit his shot to within two feet of the 16th hole to take nearest the pin. Unfortunately Bernard Fee who was playing in the match behind him happily removed the marker from his line and forgot where it came from. Distraught Palmer was nearly in tears when he saw the marker over 10 feet away before the situation was quickly rectified in the clubhouse.
In todays event Bramall’s Ashley Elliott(9) and Ian King(8) teamed up to score 43 points and an excellent back nine saw them pip four other talented pairs to finish in 5th position.
In a recent Gallup pole Swinton Parks Pete O’Neill(2) was recently voted in the top five worst dressed members of the tour, today he played some excellent golf alongside Alan Leigh and he was delighted to finish in 4th place with 44 points. Scruffy Pete narrowly missed out on improving his appearance as 3rd place and a maxitour sweater was won by Brian Hopkins(6) and Alan Pengelly(13) who had the same score but a slightly better back nine.
Stuart Pearson(5) and charismatic Kevin Hawkins(11) scored an excellent 45 points to take 2nd place however todays honours went to Ashton on Mersey duo Mark Simister(11) and Wayne Harris(13) with a wonderful 47 points. After years in the golfing doldrums Simister’s previous lifetime best was recorded two weeks ago with a 4th place finish at West Lancs and his good form continued today as they recorded a terrific 47 points. Well played chaps.
Thanks to all players for your support today.
Yours in Golf, Tim.
