Maxitours at scintillating Sandiway

Another wonderful day was enjoyed by this very full field of Maxitours competitors.

Sandiway was truly immaculate and this special venue received great praise from all the players -thanks to all the terrific staff and new Manager Secretary Anthony Roberts for their excellent work.

‘Magnificent’ said knowledgeable and wealthy Bill Parkinson who lives next door to Tiger Woods on lake Nona in Florida during the Winter. ‘This is my favourite course in the World’.

Sandiway is also home to the best chips on tour and I have to hold my hands up and admit to eating two portions today.

Phil Smeathers easily won the ‘worst dressed’ award at the Knutsford Golf Club professionals day recently. He looks set to retain the trophy next year after turning up today wearing food stained clothing. After I pointed out his faux pas he started sucking on his sweater in the exclusive clubhouse. The cause of the mark was soon revealed. ‘Oh yes, that’s right, I had beans for breakfast!’.

School teacher Andy Wilde loves his eight week holiday. Last week he didn’t play Maxitours as he was enjoying a romantic gondola ride with his Mrs in Venice. This was followed by a luxury Balkan cruise. His fascination with water continued today when his tee shot on the 12th disappeared into the scenic lake on the tricky twelfth hole.

Colin Baxendale(16), Kevin Chisnell(12), Ross Sellors(12) and Phil Wise(12) are perhaps the most unsuccessful quartet in Maxitours history. In over five years competition their total career earnings amount to a cheap box of 12 srixons. If they were racehorses they would all have been shot several seasons ago. Today everything slotted into place as they inexplicably recorded a superb 86 points. ‘We were riding on the crest of a slump’ they explained over a pint in the bar afterwards.

Talented nice guys Andy Hall(5) and Tom Fenton(8) from Cheadle Golf Club finished their round in style as they both birdied the final hole to collect a valuable six points. This delivered them into a 2nd place finish playing alongside Mick Fenton(7) and famous milkman Don Milligan(12).

First place went to the ever present Bramall golf Club team of Ian King(8), Handicap Secretary Mike Spencer(12), Darren Whittaker(13) and Neil Worthington(18). All these top gentlemen contributed extremely well and a steady start gathered momentum after an eight pointer on the 5th hole was then followed by two 7 point hauls later in their round. Well played chaps, I am delighted you won!

Many thanks to all who played today especially as all players completed their rounds in less than 4 and a quarter hours- brill. Spare a thought tonight for Sandiway’s Gary Neiles(4) who had the round of his life when he shot a gross 68. The rest of his team were hopeless and he had to settle for 19th place.’ I need some new golf friends’ said the likeable ex salt mine manager.

Maxitours ‘Abacus Law Classic’ at super Stockport

Stupendous golfing weather greeted the full field of Maxitours competitors at Stockport Golf Club this morning. The course is rated by many as the best in Cheshire and the stunning layout was once again given plenty of praise from all the players. Thanks to Head Green keeper Adam for his terrific work, efficient and attractive Jane in the office and all the friendly catering staff for making us feel so welcome.

Sixty year old Bob Sutton nearly fell over when attractive Emily from Abacus Law asked him for his phone number, much to Bob’s dismay he later discovered Emily was asking all players for their personal details. In the Abacus draw for the Titleist Sta-dry golf bag it was Mike Haseldine who came out on top- well done.

It was good to see legend Dave Antrobus playing Maxitours again after a few busy months at work. I played in a pro- am with him at Knott End yesterday and he nearly completed ‘the treble’. Two bacon baps before play and as he approached the half way house a third was definitely on the cards. Dave was upset to discover that hot food was not available and he had to settle for a large packet of shortbread biscuits instead. (He did play very well- I must add.)

In the better ball event the still conditions and perfect fairways led to some excellent scores from many pairings.

Richard Palmer(11) and John Farnsworth(21) from Mytton Fold continued their consistent play with a 5th place finish with 43 points. School teacher Marcus Rigby(23) is really making the most of his eight week holiday and he played some ‘well disciplined’ golf alongside Carl Kennedy(13) to secure 4th place. Their back nine took some ‘beating’ after they picked up an impressive 14 points on the closing four holes.

Ellesmere Golf Clubs Lee Jevons(7) knows how to pick a partner and Mike Emerson(4) collected six birdies as they had a Maxitours career best 3rd place finish. Emerson is a lovely golfer with great rhythm, his backswing is even slower than a Chelsea centre back.

Top dentist Anthony Grimley(12) and Accountant Nigel Dibble(10) closed their round strongly and they crowned off a great summer by filling the runner-up spot, scoring 44 points.

First prize was awarded to Ian Mathers (3) and Howard Kelly(11). Kelly is father to tripletts and he made three birdies on the course. He said they could have won by three if his partner hadn’t three putted. He celebrated the win with three pints. Partner Ian Mather works for Bentley and he skilfully finishes off the leather interiors. His job title is ‘Master Trimmer’ and he neatly sewed up the win with three closing pars.- well played chaps.
Thanks to all players, I hope you enjoyed your day on the links! Tim

Many thanks to Geoff Underhill and his growing company Abacus Law for their terrific sponsorship, not forgetting his attractive fiancée Eve who produced the very impressive goodie bags- 3 free Pro V1s per player-woo-hoo!

Maxitours at Prestbury Golf Club

Prestbury Golf Club was the idyllic setting for today’s Maxitours event. This is a magnificent course with a terrific membership who were great to me whilst I enjoyed being a young assistant at the Club in the early 1990’s.
The new Prestbury green keeper seems to be doing an excellent job and his smooth and incredibly fast greens gave more than a few players the heebeegeebies. Several struggled on the undulating 9th green where the more intelligent players left themselves an uphill putt.

‘It was like putting down a car bonnet’ said Tim Spencer as he watched in horror as his srixon ball gathered speed and went sailing past the flag.

The threatening rain just held off all until Richard Williamson in the last group putted out on the 18th green at 6.30pm and then started to fall heavily as he put his clubs away in the car park. Everyone had a great day and went home happy and ready to watch the ‘Ringo Starr’ of the four majors- the USPGA Championship.

Kevin Barker told me today that he saw his doctor recently as was becoming obsessed about golf. He rarely went home at the weekends or evenings as he was working on his faults, and when he did go home he had a short temper followed by a state of manic depression because he was hitting the ball all over the place. In fact he was so frustrated he never talked to his wife after a round and when he did he just snapped at her. When I asked him what the doctor advised, he replied. ‘I’ve got to shorten my backswing’. Unfortunately he could only manage 36 points today playing alongside affable Scotsman Dave McCallum.

The golf course is designed really well and requires players to work the ball both ways. As record A’ level results were published most players unfortunately failed the tough Prestbury examination. Despite perfect golfing weather poor scores reflected the difficulty of this links. Paul Lord(5) and Barry Hornby(14) took 5th place with just 39 points! Steve Aspinall(9) and Barry Wellings(7) were also surprised and delighted to feature so highly in the prizes after they scored a battling 40 points.

The ‘shock of the day’ was the pairing of Knutsford Secretary Stuart Blake(6) and respected member David Kelly(11).They scored 40 points to earn them a career best 3rd place finish. Stuarts birdie on the tough 13th hole earned the likeable pair a healthy four points. -Well played.

Tytherington’s Jason Waite(12) teamed up with young Remy Hiller(6) and they started with four points after Remy made a classy eagle on the long par five. Jason showed his maturity on the closing holes as he parred the tough 17th and 18th to close out second place.

Today’s honours also went to a Tytherington pair as late entries Pete Cleaver(7) and Carlo Mysko(21) scored a wonderful 43 points. Skilful Macclesfield Plasterer Pete started well but was in danger of crumbling in the middle of his round. However he managed to smooth over the cracks and he played the four closing holes in level par. Congratulations- great golf!

Thanks to Matt Turnock who ran the first half of todays event as I was missing the cut in the National PGA fourball Championship at Carden Park. It was also great to see my old man play 18 holes for the first time in two years- legend, well done Dad.

May thanks for your terrific support once again, yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours results for The TBD Associates Classic at Majestic Mottram Hall

Maxitours players once again enjoyed lovely sunshine as my old work place Mottram Hall was the superb venue for today’s golf. As England were tearing apart the Aussies at Trent Bridge a few Maxitours teams were getting the better of this great course. Thanks to Mottram Hall’s Jonny Chaisty and his 5 star team for the great hospitality shown to all players.

As it was the last day of my incident packed 2 week holiday in Abersoch Karen Gallagher added a touch of glamour to the event and ran the day very professionally once again, many thanks Karen.

Once again the report is a little shorter than usual.

Taking third place was the Jim Caldwell team. Clever Jim invited a few locals onto his team and their course knowledge paid dividends. Pete Atherton’s team took second place with a solid 86 points but winning for the first time in a less than average 5 year Maxitours career was Paul Woodbine(7), Richard Williamson(11), Dave Goodwin(10) and Pete Keena(12). Great golf chaps I am really delighted for you.

Many thanks once again to TBD Associates for their kind Sponsorship of this event. This rapidly growing company specialises in pro active strategic managing accountancy and advice. They are a really great company.
