Maxitours at VERY pretty Pleasington
Another full field of Maxitours competitors enjoyed playing at classy Pleasington today. The venue is rated by many as the best inland course in Lancashire. The course -as always- was presented in excellent condition and the bunkers are perhaps the best we see on tour all year.
The food is also tremendous at Pleasington – they even have tapas on the menu for the more cultured golfers on the tour. As expected Nigel Davenport steered clear of the delicate tapas and ordered the fish finger butty. The accountants eyes lit up when a huge baguette surrounded by a sea of chips arrived.
Gary Hornby and Paul Lord are Liverpool fans and they turned up looking a little bit dejected this morning. Rather like their football team they had a great front nine and then played like a couple of school kids in the second half.
‘I can’t believe how my partner Dave Moynihan hits it so straight’ said Mark Blake when he handed his card in.
‘That’s good! How come you only scored 33 points?’ I asked
‘He was hitting straight in the trees’ replied the quick witted Mancunian.
In today’s event eight of the top ten scores were from groups who teed off in the sunshine early in the day.
Gary Garner(7) and Ray Ward(15) were second out and this morning and they were both delighted to have a season best 5th place finish with 45 points.
Dale Wallace(11) from Sale Golf Club played well today as he teamed up with John Jones(12) and they also scored 45 points. Jones was devastated to watch his partner finish his round with a very costly miss from 12 inches on the last hole. ‘Have you met Dale from Sale with the touch of a whale?’ he asked me when he handed the card in alongside his depressed partner.
Postman Martin France(3) once again delivered the goods after returning from yet another golf holiday and he teamed up with Peter Atherton(12) to score 26 points on the front nine. A steadier back nine saw the Lymm men record 46 points to finish 3rd. Warrington’s Ed Wilkinson(6) played alongside good pal Roger Percival(6) and they began their round with two excellent birdies on their way to second place also with 46 points. I watched Roger thin his approach shot to within three feet at the first hole as I put out the nearest the pin markers. The Elvis Presley lookalike claimed it was a controlled punch shot. Yeah right.
Seventy year old Kit Kat lover Roy Ainsworth (25) has hit form in recent weeks. Things have improved for the extremely likeable Antrobus Golf Club member since the 9/10th handicap rule came into force. He was at it again at Pleasington playing alongside high handicapper Barrie Simpson(21). They had the best of the draw this morning and made the most of the rain free benign conditions to score 47 points. Well played chaps!
Thanks to all players for your terrific support once again, yours in golf, Tim
