Maxitours at outstanding Hopwood
I had heard great reports about Hopwood recently and the condition of this great course did not disappoint our Maxitours players today.
‘That is a lovely track!’said Paul Simpson who hadn’t visited this architectural masterpiece before.
I first fell in love with Hopwood when I tried to get through European tour school here in 1991. After a few lucky bounces Lee Westwood narrowly pipped me by 14 shots but despite this misfortune I have always thought the course was class.
The par three 16th hole at Hopwood is possibly its signature hole. It’s a real brute measuring well over 200 yards and it usually plays into the teeth of the wind. In fact it is so tough it is the only hole where you can have both the longest drive and nearest the pin. Unsurprisingly nobody birdied it today.
The early starters teed off in a bit of light rain but the skies cleared just after midday to set up a magnificent days golf. Big Don Morgan doesn’t like playing in the rain ‘The only drizzle I like is on my lemon cake’ reported the full figured Yorkshireman before he teed off first thing in his xxxl Galvin Green waterproofs.
The scoring was consistent throughout the day and more than one team reported that their golf deteriorated as the weather conditions improved.
Hale’s Brian Greenbank (6)has more time off work than a Ryan air pilot and he teamed up with likeable brothers Dave(13) and Mike Wainwright(18) and Paul Simpson(9). They were out first and scored an impressive 82 points to finish 4th.
Brookdale nice guys Neale Laurent(12), Lee Merson(1), Paul Butler(8) and Gary Winston(10) also scored 82 but their solid play on the tougher back nine saw them take 3rd place.
Wealthy pharmacist Al Kenny’s(12) team had plenty of chemistry on the golf course today.
Al dispensed his fair share of birdies as his team took 2nd place.
‘That just the Medicine’ said playing partner Paul Gilbert(19). Colin Gillespie(17) and Bramall Park secretary John Mould(16) completed the team.
The Upper class Stockport Golf Club team containing 2 ex-captains took first prize today .
The rain stopped five minutes before the lucky quartet teed off and they made the most of their good fortune. Cheshire senior player Ian Gemmell is a class act and the five handicapper was 2 under par on the tough back nine – brilliant play. Chris Hammond(8), Peter Roche(11) and Peter Bottoman(10) also had a day out as they took first place by five shots. – Congratulations on your first Maxitours victory.
Thanks also to Steve and the Catering team for excellent hospitality throughout the day.
Thanks to everyone for your support, yours in golf, Tim
