Maxitours at tropical Mere

Thanks to Mere Country Club and Hotel for hosting today’s event. For many players it was their first game of golf in 2018 and everyone really enjoyed themselves at this great venue especially as the rain held off and temperatures were extremely pleasant.

You may have heard that Ian King went to the Masters last year ‘Has anyone seen my Masters pitch mark repairer;’ he asked loudly in the Mere bar ‘It’s got sentimental value – did you know I went there last year?’
Barney Ross handed it in a couple of hours later ‘It’s not Ian King’s is it? He lost it at Wilmslow a couple of months ago and I found it there as well. He then spent three hours telling me all about his trip to the Masters’

It was great to see Tiger Woods looking so sharp after his long lay-off when he returned to the PGA tour earlier this month. He looked in great physical shape and really was striking the ball beautifully. Mick Mahon made his very own return to Maxitours after a two month lay off due to a hernia operation. Unfortunately, his comeback wasn’t quite as ‘impressive’. Mick has put on three stone and can’t get the ball off the ground.
‘I need a lesson’ was the verdict.

In todays’ event there were some new names at the top of the leader board. Taking 2nd place was Birchwoods’ Jerry Salmon(18) who was leaping with joy and ex Burnley footballer Steve Broome(14) who is a very small man. Steve told me that when he was Birchwood Captain the framed picture of him in the clubhouse only showed the top half of his head. His favourite game is mini golf.

Winning todays event with a better back nine were the happy Heyrose duo- retired grandfather Bill Heywood(17) and Ian Hellens(12). Hellens has just returned from an exciting family holiday in Lapland where he spent most of the day looking at a few reindeers and huskies. I will have to go. He was cool as ice late in his round as he made impressive birdies on his final two holes. Well played chaps great golf.

Thanks for all who played today. Let’s hope for some drier weather in February.
Yours in Golf, Tim
