Maxitours at World Class Wilmslow Another incredibly beautiful November day greeted Maxitours players as they arrived at Wilmslow this morning. ‘I Canner believe how good the greens were!’ said Potteries man Colin Roberts. Karen and Simon behind the bar are also brilliant to deal with and the service was five-star throughout the day for my players, thank you very much. Mick Mahon’s team comes down to Cheshire from the frozen North (Blackburn) most weeks to play Maxitours events. They are always surprised by the number of Range Rovers they see and they regularly comment on the stunning real estate surrounding the courses. The Chairman of greens at Hale, Andy Veitch, recorded a Maxitours record 6 point haul on a single hole after he hold his 2nd shot on a par five today. Playing alongside his more intelligent brother Peter they had an impressive 26 points on their first nine. Unfortunately, they were playing with Martin Bramwell who gave them the kiss of death when he told them ‘You’ve got this in the bag.’ They came home in 17 points to finish mid table. Darren Whittaker is a really great lad and it was nice to see him playing today. Twenty years ago his good looks and flowing hair meant he was often confused with pop superstar Mick Hutchence and there were regular reports of women throwing themselves at his feet. It is not only his golf that has deteriorated in the last few years -he now gets mistaken for I’m a Celebrity star Nick Knowles. He played well today however to record a top ten finish. Ex Copper Dave Sully was chatting in the bar and he was delighted to hear that Brit Matthew Hedges had been released after falsely being accused of spying in Dubai. Dave’s golf Club could do with being released on his downswing as he finished in a very average 28th place. Heyrose’s Steve Blakeway(3) and Ian Hellens(12) were delighted to beat their friend Graham Jackson and finish in 6th place with 45 points. Ashton in Makerfields Pete Sumner(7) and Dave Thomas(16) took 5th and Bramalls Steve Merricks(5) and Neil Lingwood(15) took 4th place all with 45 points. Lymm members Martin Cox(25) and Marc Morris(18) usually turn up just to have a nice bacon butty but today they were actually in the prizes scoring 46 points to finish in 3rd spot. Martin Cox gets plenty of shots and he normally needs them but today he played his best golf of the year and was backed up well by his good friend. Phil Hanson(8) and John Jobes(18) took second place also on 46 points but with a better back nine. Phil loves the horses and told me to back a horse in the 2.35 at Kempton. The horse finished last but Phil would have been a great each way bet with very long odds as he hasn’t shown any form for years. Taking first place was Bramall and Cheshire senior golfer Gareth Bradley (scr) and his friend John Owen(11). Impressive Bradley scored six birdies. ‘I couldn’t miss on those greens. They were immaculate.’ Said Bradley. Well played chaps great golf. Thanks to everyone for your support. I hope you had a great day. Maxitours at Wonderful Ringway
| Maxitours at wonderful Ringway
Superb golfing conditions once again greeted Maxitours competitors at Ringway this morning. The early morning frost soon cleared and a magnificent day for golf was enjoyed by all. Thanks to general Manager Tracy Rawlinson and her excellent team for hosting the event and looking after us so well. The course has been in terrific condition all Summer and with more improvements taking place highly respected head greenkeeper Richie Stephens has a course to be proud of. Sorry for the shorter report as I am a gentleman’s dinner tonight and I am running late! Richard Williamsons team took 3rd place with a best ever 90 points- even Dave Goodwin played well; Phil Robinson and Paul Woodbine also did plenty of damage. Second place went to Sandiways Gary Neiles, Joe Yates, John Longworth and Alan Forber with an excellent 91 points. Richard Blackwells team finally got it together this week after a run of very average results and they had a best of the year score of 94 points. ’It was our day today said team mate Tony Jennison from New Mills, we couldn’t miss.’ John Hilton and Tim Johnson completed the fourball. Well played chaps great score. Nearest the Pin 2’s £147.50 3 Pro v1s or 8 srixons per 2

Blue skies, a sea breeze, fast running fairways and superb greens meant this course was played as it was designed to be played. A terrific test of golf. Ben and the bar staff were exceptional to deal with throughout the day and couldn’t have been more helpful. A lot of my players commented on the quality of their service. Thanks very much indeed. Simon Ashton’s team stayed over in Lytham last night as they wanted to be fully prepared for today’s event. They arrived last night and the plan was to could get to the course early this morning and warm up on the driving range and hit a few putts. They even had a quiet early evening fish and chip supper to give their food plenty of time to digest. Unfortunately, they followed it up with 8 pints and were hopeless today. Fairhaven is famous for being protected by superb bunkers. They have an excellent maintenance programme and work hard on them each Winter. John Farnsworth hates bunkers and as he prepared to play his approach shot he was delighted to see that around the 16th green 4 of the 5 bunkers were GUR unfortunately his shot trickled into the only one in play. The ball soon ended up in his pocket. Sorry if the write up is shorter than usual I have just had my head pecked by Jim Cox for the last hour. He decided to sit next to me after his round with a couple of pints and then talked me through each hole whilst I was trying to do my results. If anyone is remotely interested Jim finished in 3rd place alongside Dave Blood(8) Andy Sandham(7) and Dave Collinson(8). Spiderman creator Stan Lee passed away last night and it was the ‘Fantastic four’ from Lymm and Warrington who played like Marvels today to take 2nd place. ‘Captain America’ lookalike Roger Percival(5), ‘Iron man’ Martin France(3), ‘Whiplash Ed Wilkinson’ (6) and the ‘Incredible Bulk’ Pete Atherton(12) all joined forces to destroy most of their enemies. Signal man Paul Wrigley(6) from Hopwood and his team steamed into 1st place with 89 points. He teamed up with Aiden Hoosen(+1) Ken Hardy (2) and Steve Barker(12). Hardy played 5 holes mid round in five under as he followed up an eagle with a run of birdies. As he tried to hole his putt on the last there were a few leaves on Wrigley’s line, but according to the railway man they were the right kind of leaves and he rolled in his putt. Well played chaps great win. Thanks to all who played today EVERYONE seemed to enjoy this great course. Yours in Golf, Tim Nearest the pin 10th Ian Cole Dozen AD333 2’s sweep

Maxitours at stunning Stockport

Heavy overnight rain soon eased and a great day was enjoyed by all at Stockport Golf Club in today’s Maxitours event. The course looked a real treat despite the downpour with lush green fairways lined with gold coloured Autumn trees. As well as an exceptional golf course and greens staff the Catering at Stockport is also marvellous. Thanks to Paul and Sue for looking after us so well today. They never charge me for my lunchtime steak pie and chips but I look after them at the end of the day. It is a beautiful relationship. It was great to see Andrea Holt (number 1 table tennis player in England for many years) playing today. Andrea is an Olympian and she shared a lift with top athlete Linford Christie during the ’82 Olympics in Barcelona. She shared the Stockport revolving door with team mate Richard Blackwell today but is unlikely to remember the experience. Roy Ainsworth looked confident as he checked in this morning. A couple of lovely senior Stockport members were in the clubhouse with me enjoying the excellent cuisine and commenting on shots that were being hit off the 17th tee. Nigel Hallows teed off wearing shorts. Kev Hart is always struggling for partners and I often team him up with any spare pairs. He was having a sociable chat with Maxitours player in the changing rooms and asked him where he was from. In today’s event Ex head teacher and all round nice guy Nigel Ashton(13) ticked all the right boxes as he helped his team into 3rd place with 86 points. Dave Cooper(16) Paul Fell(6) and Tony Hereford(16) completed the quartet. Denton mechanic Jim Cox (5) always enjoys playing at Stockport and he led his team into 2nd place. Gary Bennell(13) Steve Jenkinson(10) and Manchester Airports Ian George (7) also landed 86 points but had a strong back nine. Justin Rose returned to the top of the world ranking at the weekend with his victory in Turkey and Graham Jackson returned to the top of the Maxitours Stuburt Order of Merit after just two events as he followed up a good performance last week with victory today. ‘My chipping was awesome’ reported Jackson. ‘I was great today!’ We are all delighted for you Graham. Well played. Jim Clarke(12) Mark Hagarty (13)and Pete Ledger(19) completed the team. Great performance chaps. Thanks to everyone for your support today. Results from marvellous Mottram Hall
| Maxitours at marvellous Mottram Hall
Maxitours visited my old Club Mottram Hall in todays Maxitours event. Perhaps the best back nine layout in Cheshire and a very enjoyable front nine always makes this a popular venue. The tough Summer saw us playing off forward tees whilst repair work is taking place so scoring was excellent. Champneys have just purchased the hotel and there are plans for a huge lake in front of the 18th green next year as the course continues to improve. Shotgun starts are now underway after the clocks have gone back and check-in is always a busy time for me as I have to register and hand cards out to over 100 golfers in just over an hour. I don’t have time for the usual banter and try and run a tight ship so there is no queue for my players. There were still a couple of daft enquiries to handle. At my peak period Rob Hands asked me ‘Does tee 12b go before or after tee 12a?’ Take a wild guess Rob. ‘Will it be frosty next Thursday Tim?’ Asked Gareth Holmes. I have no idea Gareth. Remind me to bring my crystal ball with me next time. When I worked at Mottram Hall twenty years ago the shop was always busy and I had a chap phone up for a tee time. He asked for a 12 o’clock start. ‘I have 12.02pm still available’ I replied. He then asked me ‘Do you have anything slightly earlier?’ It’s Guy Fawkes night next week but Dave Booth is staying at home. I don’t need to go out for Bonfire night I.ve just watched these 3 dummies feeling the heat and burn on the back nine – our score went up in flames! Mike Spencer loves his golf and the Bramall Captain played at St Andrews yesterday and then drove 300 miles to play Mottram St Andrews today. ‘I enjoyed both courses equally’ said the diplomatic wealthy ex banker. In today’s event Lee Tilley was delighted to report that his good friend Dave Sarsfield made a par from a bunker. Usually if his ball finishes in a bunker ‘it’s curtains for Dave’ ‘Finito’ ‘Pick your ball up time’ ‘Get out your hamlets.’ Today he reportedly hit something that resembled a splash shot and then rolled his putt in. The last sand save he recorded was in 1989 when he was playing football on Rhyl beach with his kids. Congratulations Dave. In todays event the scoring was excellent. Les Russon’s Bramall team and Brian Greenbanks Hale team finished in 5th place with 88 points. Second place was decided on a card play off with 3 teams scoring 89 points. Neil Edwards(8), Ste Woods(23), Jason Atherton(9) and Matty Holland(16) from Ashton in Makerfield finished in 4th place with 8 points. They celebrated with a few beers in the Mottram bar. Third place went to badly dressed Graham Jackson(8) Norrie Irwin(13) Mark Hagarty(14) and Paul Whalley(17). Jackson is a fierce competitor and had three birdies to help his team. Leigh golf Clubs Joe Yates(15) Gary Neiles(6) John Longworth(14) and Alan Forber(15) took 2nd place after they scored 46 points on the tougher back nine. Winning the first event of the Stuburt Winter series was Wilmslows’ Jim Caldwell.(11) Peter Griggs(15), Lee Charnley(6) from Prestbury and Liam Pilkington(12) . The likeable quartet started on the 1st hole and went out in a best of the day46 oints and returned in 45 points. Great golf chaps well played!!
