Maxitours at Delightful Dunham Forest

As the early morning pairings began to arrive at the beautifully manicured Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club the air of anticipation of an excellent day’s golf could be felt.

Ian Wrigley, consummate Club Professional was there to greet PGA Pro Matthew Turnock (greatest teaching Pro in Cheshire and all round top lad) with a warm welcome along with Club House Manager Mike Saxon and his excellent team of catering and bar staff.

As players checked in once again the question of “Where’s Tim?” came thick and fast and “Another holiday” but ‘hey he deserves a break with his family’ they all agreed and they were glad to see their cards efficiently marked up for them by the Matthew in his absence (think he must have OCD !!!).

By late afternoon the light breeze had dropped and players were beginning to feel the full heat and humidity of the day, unfortunately it proved too much for late starters Joe York (Scr) and Charles Herbert (14) as they failed to score on the 17th on their way to 44 points – agony !!! If anyone finds a pair of trolley wheels on the 17th tee please hand them in at the next event as Joe and Charles’s appeared to fall off at this point under the intense pressure. Joe however had the consolation of two 2’s to win a share of the ball pot.
In a closely fought event it was clear that this was a day that would test the 9 hole card count back rule to its limits as the scoring became tighter and tighter at the top of the leader board. Clear winner by two points were Saddleworths top entreprenuers Lee Tilley and Pete Norbury with an excellent 47 points. Lewis Marland and Alf Shillitoe recorded their best ever finish as their 45 points was good enough for second position.

The top of the Order of Merit has changed hands once again with big hitting Adam Hart at the top of the Order of Merit. With 13 events remaining there is still plenty of time to make your move!

Maxitours at Ringway

Once again the Ringway Golf Club provided a warm welcome for today’s Maxitours event. The catering and hospitality were first class as always. Cameron Diaz lookalike Manager Fiona and Richard Gere lookalike accounts manager Peter were also very helpful. The magnificent Ringway greens were double cut first thing this morning in preparation for a great day’s golf.

There is some historical confusion as to when the game of golf was first played. There are some records of men beating the ground with sticks in the 15th century but it could not be confirmed whether they were partaking in golf or some form of witchcraft. Bob Sutton from Knutsford was seen casting a few spells of his own today but there was not too much magic in the air as he struggled to a mediocre 11th position.

Wayne Colclough celebrated the Royal birth with a new cropped haircut. The fresh faced Woodside member actually had a slight look of HRH Prince George of Cambridge especially when he started to cry after failing to score on any of his first four holes.

David Smith and his team got that ‘Lee Westwood feeling’ after 47 points on the front nine they could only manage 35 points on the tougher back nine and they saw their chances of a famous victory cruelly disappear.

It was another great Open Championship last week and despite the fact he is an American Phil Mickleson was a worthy and popular winner. Colin Baxendal(16) has been compared many times to Phil as he also has the occasional 4 putt and has never turned down an autograph. Today he played solid golf as he recorded 84 points playing alongside Kevin Chisnell(12) and Mo Dar(15) from Mere and this was good enough for fourth.

In the Open there were two young very talented British amateurs who successfully made the cut on the tough Muirfield links. Both of them looked like they required a good meal. There were not many hungry looking golfers in plump Mike Spencer’s(14) team and he played well alongside Darren Whittaker(14) Dave Keen(13) and Joe Kirwan(5) to finish in 3rd place also with 84 points.

Late in the day Danny Huffman(9), Andy Buckley(16), Mike Lynch(10) and Brian Kelly(14) from Ashton on Mersey nearly took the honours with an excellent 85 points.

Maxitours legends Neville Dennis(16), Frank Massey(12), John Reilly(9) and Jimmy O’Reilly(9) have not had a success for nearly two years 76 year old Neville regularly claims he is too old to win any more. Today he rolled back the years as he birdied the 8th and 17th holes to cement first place- well played chaps.

Congratulations to Steve Parle who aced the lovely 8th hole and receives a dozen balls for his efforts. Many thanks to everybody for playing today, I hope you enjoyed your golf.

Maxitours at The Tytherington Club

The balmy British summer continued as temperatures once again reached well into the 80’s. This meant that excellent Tytherington was playing shorter than usual and the lovely course and facilities were enjoyed by all.

At Muirfield the early morning scores were much better than later in the day and this was mirrored in todays event. The Mediterranean sun firmed up the greens and sapped energy from the less fit players on the tour. Only Jim Rymer looked cool after preparing for the heat by clean shaving both his legs late last night.

Max Henderson(10) has struggled with his game in recent weeks. Things reached an all time low when he lost 2 balls in the ball washer during a recent round. Today he played wonderful golf and enjoyed three birdies in just five holes to help his team into 5th place. PC Ben Trotter(6) and Hale property tycoons John Hilditch(12) and Iain Bartholomew (4) made up the rest of the team.

Wealthy Bill Parkinson(11) owns Moorhouses Brewery and he flew in for today’s event from his holiday home at LakeNona. He is also a golf member at the Florida resort alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell. He was brought back to reality as he played alongside team mate Barry Rigby(17) Ian Nelson(21) and Ted Ellis(12)who flew down the M6 from Chorley Golf Club to play with him today. A magnificent par at the last from Ted secured fourth position for this senior team with 83 points.

Mark O’Meara, Tom Lehman, Miguel Jimenez, John Stubbs(18), John Royle(16), Guy Hall(10) and Keith Coxon(9) also turned back their body clocks today and played stunning golf to feature near the top of a leaderboard. The decrepit Sale men were delighted with 84 points and 3rd place.

Top tour caddy James Baker landed struggling Simon Dyson’s bag just 16 days ago and he has really helped the blond haired Yorkshireman turn around his season after two great weeks. Today he also helped turn around his teams fortunes after a magnificent run of threes on the front nine. Howard Baker(17), James Davidson(13) and Nigel Speake(15) were the other members of the Tytherington team which finished second.

Taking top honours today were the Didsbury team of Bob Vickers(7), Phil Sharp(18), Malc Wells(4) and Adam Hart(7). Hart was the star of the show and he picked up 7 shots for his team after playing his 5 tough shot holes in a magnificent two under par. Well played!

Somebody thought they had spotted Lord Lucan today but there was certainly no sightings of Dave Chambers in the bar after he recorded his first ever hole in one on the 5th hole. Congratulations on your terrific shot Dave!
