Maxitours at ‘breathtaking’ Hopwood

The Manchester Golf Club was the superb setting for today’s Maxitours event. ‘This must be the best course we play all year’ remarked a knowledgeable Andy Stubbens, many players in today’s strong field would agree with him.

The friendly club has Brian O’Connor as their top class PGA pro and businessman. His wife Geraldine does a great job as the Club Secretary and daughter Rachel is a class player currently studying in the US , the whole family was extremely efficient and wonderfully hospitable today.

On arrival at the club there was an eerie smoky mist covering the course as the Bredbury plastic fire fallout incredibly continued to affect distant areas. Through the haze 76 year old Neville Dennis was a solitary figure on the range. He was mastering his bunker play ‘I practice every day’ wheezed the dedicated legend as he struggled with the poisonous fumes.

Another Maxitours legend is the food loving Dave Antrobus. This morning he looked like a boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar when a large portion of chips arrived with his pre-round cheese on toast. ‘I didn’t know it would come with chips- honestly. I ordered it from the breakfast menu’ said a distraught Antrobus ‘I never ever eat chips before 11 o’clock’.

Today thousands of schoolchildren received their GCSE results. There was the usual spread of success and disappointments. There were also bad results for golfers George Maxwell and Willie White who must do better after they scored just 28 points. Terry Day and Chris Ernill could be getting a letter home after they also failed with just 29 points. Worryingly Bill Melia and Alan Brough have been advised to take up woodwork as they could only manage 27 points.

In today’s competition it was a case of trying to make your score on the easier front nine before trying to hang on in there over the famous tough closing holes. John Beech and Glynn Jones went ‘From Penthouse to Doghouse’ as a sparkling front nine of 23 points was followed by a paltry 13 points on the back nine.

Scoring at the top of the leaderboard was once again was very close with just 2 points separating the top 8 pairings.

Taking 4th place was Mark Woodhead(12) and Paul Kuiper(12) with an excellent 43 point haul. Third place went to the veteran pairing of Dave Alcock(11) and Ian Appleton(16) who could be found whimpering in the corner of the clubhouse after picking up just three points on their final two holes. Frustrated John Reilly(9) and Jimmy ‘six daughters’ O’Reilly(9) could be seen head butting the tables in the Hopwood dining room after several lipped putts over the closing holes cost them a momentous victory.

First place today went to the pairing of businessman Ian King(9) and student Matt Spencer(14) who also scored a respectable 44 points, a strong back nine from the golf mad Bramall duo saw ever present King record his first victory for over two years. Great golf chaps.

It is great to see top blokes Colin Roberts and John Rigby take the senior prize (best over 60’s not in the top 3). A poor finish also cost this likeable duo from winning the main event.

Many thanks for your support today, Tim.

Maxitours At Vale Royal

Heavy overnight rain cleared away and the glorious sun shone for the 130 maxitours competitors at stunning Vale Royal Abbey today. Each year the course continues to mature and owner Steve Graham, who played today, has every reason to be very proud of his club. Manager Ian Embury runs a very tight ship and the golf course was first class.

Todays event was a team of four Am Am with the best two stableford scores to count. Anton Ellis said his team prefer to call it ‘the least worst two scores to count’ and they were delighted to finish last with 61 points.

Mike Spencer has soup for lunch most days. His wife enjoys cooking with a nice quality wooden spoon and she has a nice collection as Mike regularly brings her one home from the golf course. Today Mike actually played with his lovely wife Maria and their two offspring but there will be no soup stirring this week after the family scored a commendable 79 points.

In todays event the scoring was extremely tight especially at the top of the leaderboard where just three points separated the first ten teams.

Willie Morgan(10) was famous for his excellent wing play at Manchester United. Today the living legend rolled back the years and made another late run as he picked up 4 shots for his team over the closing five holes. His Vale Royal team just missed out on the prizes.

Taking third place with 87 points was the team of firemen from Leigh, Phil Dermott(9), Carl Dermott(10), Mark Riley(6) and Jamie Vagon(9). It was clear they have been practicing hard on their putting during another quiet shift at the station as Phil coolly rolled in three excellent birdie putts on the back nine.

Eddy Sterlings(6) team from Wychwood also played great golf on the easier back nine and the talented Wain brothers, Neil (+2) and Lee (scr) recorded six birdies on their closing holes as they also scored 87 points. Saj Hashmi(10) was the less talented 4th member of the team.

Jason Duffner lookalike Mike Johnson(9) (beer belly, rarely smiles) from Astbury today played alongside his engineering colleagues Mark Robinson(10), Stuart Coupe(11) and Matthew Wiggins(22). After an average front nine of 41 points they also played terrific golf on the way home and Coupes dramatic birdie on the last gave them first place by a single shot.

Many thanks for your terrific support today,

Yours in Golf,

Tim.

Charles Herbert’s fine recent form has seen him move to the top of the Shotsaver Order of Merit. Lewis Marland is also suffering from nausea and regular nose bleeds as he finds himself in a career best dizzying 29th position. Paul Hodgson has been working hard at his game and is deperate to move into the top 200 in the next few weeks.

Results from North Manchester

As I was still ‘en transit’ from my French holiday this afternoon, Karen Gallagher kindly and very efficiently ran todays Maxitours event for me at North Manchester. Several players have already contacted me to let me know that the course was in superb condition and they really enjoyed the famous North Manchester hospitality.

During my ten days away Tiger Woods shot 61 on a tough golf course and even more surprisingly Lewis Marland(13) has recorded two top three finishes. Today playing alongside Gareth Winston(13), Stuart Roache(11) and John Loughman(15) he finished third on 83 points.

George Crawshaw(6) has just successfully completed a golf management degree at Liverpool University today he teamed up with famous Manchester DJ Carl Kennedy(11), Joe York(scr) and taxi controller Mo Afzal(12). They recorded 84 points to finish second on a card play off.

Winning todays event with 84 points on a back nine card play off were the big hitting team of Andy Stubbens(5), Alan Pengelly(12), Charles Herbert(14) and Martin Firth(6) they picked up an excellent 8 shots on the tough back nine to take first place.

Many thanks for your support today, Tim ‘I hope I never see another ham and fromage baguette’ Maxwell.
