Maxitours at Brilliant Bolton Old Links

Room for teams at Hazel Grove next Thursday 17th – the greens are superb!

Maxitours at brilliant Bolton Old Links

Bolton Old links was the terrific venue for todays’ event and the reports from my players suggested that everyone was very impressed indeed.
‘That is the best course I have played this year!’ Declared Paul Gilbert.
‘What a fantastic layout!’ Announced well-travelled John Webb.
‘Those greens are quality. I love it here.’ reported Dave Fleming.

The Old Links greenkeeper is excellent. He knows the importance of fast surfaces for the modern golfer and he keeps the greens ironed and hand cut for his members throughout the year. They were rolling at 11 on the stimp-meter this morning. Great work – many thanks. Professional Sean Owen is a smart lad and his shop
Sheep farmer Richard Palmer is an optimist. He played unusually well today and even came in a few times on the scorecard for a change.
‘Apart from Monday and Tuesday I have played well this week.’
We are only at Friday and I know he didn’t play on Thursday.

Dave Buckley and his team were impressive this morning. They had their first pint of san Miguel at 9.15am which is a new Maxitours record. This set them up for a solid 80 points and a top ten finish.

Sam Leach and his team are great guys. I told them that the half-way house was superb and if they were playing badly they could always cheer themselves up with a sausage roll half way around.
‘I think I’ll put the order in now!’ Replied team mate Jonny Barton ‘Where’s the menu?’
Leading the way for most of the day was the Simon Hemsley(12) Bramhall team with 84 points. Joe Kirwan(8) and Greg Hamilton(14) and Al Demmy all played superbly.
Ex Lancashire cricketer Warren Hegg(4) is always a handy man to have on your team and he dragged Gordon Warke (8) Wayne Harper(11) and Nigel Hallows(7)around also in 84 points. They narrowly lost out on a slightly worse back nine.

Late in the day the wind dropped a little.
Royal Birkdale plus 2 handicapper Shaun Dobson returning from college in the States teamed up with his less talented Dad(10), even less talented Michael Holmes (15)and bottom of the barrel Paul Swanick(18). Shaun had an impressive six birdies in the tough conditions to secure 2nd place.
Last match in was Vale Royals’ Andy Buckley(8) Don Phillips(14) Stuart Park(13) and John McCabe(22). After 38 points on the front nine they all chipped in with some terrific golf on the back nine to be home in 47 points to take the win on a card play-off. Buckley holed a full wedge as the popular team went crazy.

Great golf guys, well played.

Welsh Classic full results

Maxitours at breathtaking North Wales

What a terrific two days in the sun.
Thanks to everyone who played in the Welsh Classic. Well over 100 golfers spending two days in Wales and not a single issue which is a testament to what a lovely group of golfers I am lucky enough to have on my tour.

There was a slight incident when Colin Upton got hit in the face by a stray golf ball as he played the 3rd hole but he took it on the chin.

North Wales is an incredibly friendly golf club and General Manager Phil Beard is the nicest guy in the golf business. The professional shop and catering is also up there with the best in Wales. All my players love this venue and the course can boast possibly the most enjoyable last four holes in golf- they are all short but cracking fun to play.

Graham Jackson played with his lovely better half Caroline this week. Everyone thinks she is far too nice for him. Unfortunately, since he has been dating the health conscious Heyrose lady member Graham has changed. He went to the bar this morning and asked:
‘Can I have a small breakfast?’
I never thought I would see the day.

It was great to see Roy Ainsworth make the trip to watch his team play. Roy had a wisdom tooth out yesterday so missed his favourite event. The 15th tee is right next to the clubhouse and Roy rushed over urging me to watch his team tee off.
‘Just watch this lot play their shots. It will make you appreciate what I have to put up with each week.’

In todays event the shortened course and fast running fairways meant the big hitters were destroying the par fives. Six birdies from James Cash(1) and a four pointer from his Dad Russell(5) helped Jim Caldwell’s(12) Wilmslow team gather 92 points for the best score of the week. Excellent.
Simon Hemsleys(12) Bramhall team were 23 points better than yesterdays abysmal performance and they finished 2nd with 89 points. Gareth(+2) and Charlie Bradley(1) and Joe Kirwan (8) completed the talented team.

In the overall two day event it was incredibly close with the Jim Caldwell, Paul Fell and Bob Eastwood teams sharing 3rd place on excellent scores of 22 under par.

Gary Owen(9) and Mark Bone(9) were devastated to learn this week that they would not be travelling to the Tokyo Olympics due to Covid and quarantine restrictions. The Sports analysts for the British Olympic Taekwondo team were delighted however to take second place in the Welsh Classic.
‘This beats a gold medal at the Olympics any day.’ Announced delighted Owen.
Alan Gale(21) and Alistair Holloway(14) made up the quartet.

Taking the honours was the Davyhulme Park team who held their nerve despite dropping a shot on the opening hole. I watched John McAtee(7) and Paul Yearsley(13) both impressively birdie the closing hole to seal a narrow win. Kev Hart (11) and Ted Mansfield (17) also played great golf over the two days. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your support and 100% attendance.
Superb.

Tim.

Maxitours at Conwy

A brilliant day at Curtis Cup hosting and Open Qualifying venue Conwy today. This course is a classic.

The green keeper and his staff were up early this morning mowing greens and fairways in preparation for our event. Thank you for the immaculate presentation.

‘I’ve never seen it this good!’ Declared Graham Jackson.

Keep your eye on Colin Roberts tonight he could end up anywhere. He even turned up at North Wales golf club early this morning. Staff and caterers were horrified when he told them that 140 golfers would be arriving. North Wales is tomorrow Colin.

Phil Dickens started playing bad golf 42 years ago and today he had his first ever hole in one. Well done Phil. There are 140 golfers out in Llandudno tonight so get your wallet out. For those who don’t know him Phil is 5’10, grey hair and looks a bit scruffy.

Leading the way is Carden Parks Paul Fell(7) Colin Bryan(9) Mike Lowe(9) and Ian Venables(16). They had 83 points just dropping a shot on the short 6th hole in a great team effort. Kev Harts Davyhulme team is 2nd and Lewis Marlands Heyrose team lies in 3rd. and Bob Eastwoods Bramall team are surprising everyone in 5th place.

Maxitours at superb Vale Royal

Seven days ago the last Maxitours event took place in cold, damp conditions. What a difference a week can make. Firm fairways, lightening fast pure greens and Mediterranean temperatures saw Summer finally arrive.

‘That is my favourite course’ Announced Steve Heywood. ‘Brilliant day!’

‘Wow, this place just gets better. The greens were outstanding.’ Reported knowledgeable Andy Veitch.

Thanks to superb General Manager Ian Embury all his bar staff for serving my guys so efficiently throughout the day. I saw plenty of Stella making its way to the outside tables.

Karen Gallagher did a great job running my event this morning. Martin Humphries is a lovely man and always sits down right next to me and has a chat each week when he checks in. I was very relieved to hear him say that he thought Karen was much better looking than me.

John Linsky was playing bad golf. He couldn’t buy a par. Things got even worse when team mate Dave Monk’s thinned chip across the 14th green rattled into his calf muscle. Hobbling John then parred the next two holes.

Kev Hart knows even less about football than he does about golf.

Team mate Paul Yearsley asked him who he thought would win the Euros.

‘I don’t know.’ Replied Kevin. ‘Who’s playing?’

Scoring was excellent as players made the most of the brilliant greens and playing from yellow tees.

The fairways were running so fast even Paul Robinson drove the 3rd green and made a lovely eagle.

Denton quartet Gary Owen(9) Alistair Holloway (13) Lewis Ramsden (12) and Josh Forster (7) had a terrific 89 points to take 3rd

The Hopwood/North Manchester team of Paul Lord(5) Gary Hornby(14) Tony Senior (12) and Mathew Tench(12) had a slow start with 41 points on the front nine- they caught fire on the back nine with 48 points to secure 2nd place on the card play-off.

Arthur Albiston(12) appears in the new Man United documentary featuring Eric Cantona . It was Albiston who was the king today after making a superb birdie on the index 1 twelfth hole to help his side achieve a 90 point total. Kevin Hawkins (10) Gary Milne(8) and Brian Monks (3) completed the team. Well played chaps great score.

Maxitours at beautiful Bramall Park

Maxitours at beautiful Bramall Park

A rain free day greeted us at Bramall Park. I love this golf course which sits proudly in the wealthy Stockport suburbs.

Despite more heavy overnight rain the greens were excellent and running at a lovely pace.

‘They are definitely the best greens I have played on all year.’ Declared Martin Humphries who plays at least three opens each week.
‘Considering the recent weather the course was superbly presented’. Reported Graham Minton. Thanks to all the greens staff for their work.

Head pro Craig Daggitt is a friend of mine and runs a tight ship. He can’t be more helpful and has a brilliant shop for his members. The clubhouse also keeps getting better and there was a real buzz about the place as I did my report at 8.30pm. There must have been forty people enjoying food, drink and company – what a great golf club.

Tony Evans is a great bloke from Alsager. We always have a good laugh. His team today contained officially the worst player ever to play in a Maxitours event -Stuart Hibbert who has a handicap of 34.
High handicappers normally sound alarm bells as they have the potential to score heavily but Tony assured me that they only invite Stuart to play because he drives and he has a nice big car for golf clubs. Sure enough they were hopeless.

Apologies to Jack Coleman- a really lovely man who has suffered years of Maxitours abuse with bottom of the leaderboard performances. Last week he was class however and had a career best finish 4th place after some wonderful golf. Unfortunately, I was in a rush and he didn’t even get a mention in the report. Sorry Jack. Today he finished 2nd from last.

Roy Ainsworth has been out of the prizes for a couple of years, every week he searches high and low to find a winning team. Today he couldn’t even remember one of his team mates names.
‘I’m not sure but think I found him on the Tinder website. ’ Chuckled Roy.
The team finally clicked and they were delighted to finish in 2nd place. Adam Princep (2) Mike Verdon (15) and new guy Nigel Clapham (20) all contributed well as they racked up 84 points.

Winning today were crazy Microlite flying Les Penson(19), Paul Salt (18) Steve Gowry(2) and Conor Graham(8) all from Heyrose. Holes 10-12 at Bramall Park are really tough but Graham played them in two under which is exceptional. The only problem is that he works for the dark side (American Golf- so may not be eligible to win a prize.) Apart from that he is a nice guy.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance once again today- superb.

Yours in golf, Tim
