Maxitours at Davenport Golf Club

Davenport was in lovely condition for today’s Maxitours event. Hard working Club Pro Tony Stevens runs a tight and very friendly ship and the staff, members, President and Captain all made us feel very welcome indeed.

John Stubbs was trying to be in positive mood before his round ‘my long game is hopeless but I think it’s slowly getting better, once that improves I really need to work on my short game’.

Ruel Spence and Jimmy Edwards have also struggled in recent events. They were delighted to finish in the middle of the field today. When Ruel was asked if his playing partner let him down ‘no, he was actually quite good in comparison to most weeks’ he commented.

The lovely Davenport course requires excellent course management and clever strategy. The narrow fairways and firm greens led to some very average scoring and a record low total of just 40 points was good enough for first place today.

Senior players enjoyed the fast running fairways and they featured strongly today. Young looking Ron Sloane(19) and the less fresh-faced Tim Spencer(18) called upon their many years of experience and kept the ball in play well to secure 5th position with 39 points.

Mike Delooze(10) ‘volunteered’ to play with the hung over Des Kelly(16). Des had an interesting night out in ‘The Warrington Gentleman’s Club’ yesterday and came on the card just twice with vital birdies on the tough 7th and 9th holes. Mike played some solid golf to drag them both into 4th spot.

Nice guys Alan Pengelly(14) and Brian Hopkins(6) were clear favourites to win today after an impressive outward 22 points on the tougher front nine. They capitulated towards the end of their tournament and picked up just six points on the closing four holes ‘It was just like watching Brazil’ chuckled compassionate playing partner Alan Smith.

Deep pocketed Yorkshire men John Snowdon(9) and Alan Robinson(3) from Chesterfield struggled on the front nine and thought that they ‘ad nowt t’ play for’ after failing to score on the 7th hole. However they relaxed and played some great golf on the back nine and were both surprised and delighted to take 2nd place.

Veterans Guy Hall from Sale and Stamford’s Ian Trow also moved through the gears on the back nine. Guy plays poorly most weeks however the greatest moment of his golf career came at Davenport last year when he surprised family and friends with a second place finish. Today the course brought back some great memories and he birdied both the 10th hole and under intense pressure he rolled another in on the 18th hole to snatch the winners spot. Great golf chaps, very well played.

Thank you to all who played today, your support is always appreciated. Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at Vale Royal

Vale Royal Abbey was the latest majestic setting for today’s Maxitours event. The course, staff and facilities were at the very high standard we expect from this five star venue. Congratulations to Manager Ian Embury and his team for a great job.

Steve Mattinson turned up to play with his wealthy Mere friends. He also produced one of the thickest wallets I have seen. Unfortunately for Steve on closer inspection his wallet is crammed full of receipts and he struggled to scrape together his entrance fee.

The early starters enjoyed the best of the weather conditions however the firm fast running greens and fairways made scoring tricky. Ian Lilley’s team narrowly missed out on a podium finish after an excellent back nine saw Hazel Grove housewife superstars Alan Clough(17), Geoff Haynes(6), Ray Stanier(21) and Trevor Harrison(9) finish fourth on 79 points.

Richard Blackwell(14) looks like a good golfer, dresses like a good golfer, swings the club like a good golfer and actually hits the ball like a good golfer. Despite this he is a deceptively bad player who rarely finishes in the prizes. Today his game came together as he joined up with the Bramall team of John Neale(18), John Lawson(19) and Andy Hamlett(10) to record 80 points and take 3rd place.

Another vastly underrated golfer is Alf Shillitoe (his mates think he is hopeless). Today the 18 handicapper inspired his team to a commendable 3rd place finish and he even managed to contribute with a couple of high quality pars. Gareth Winston(13), Neil Laurent(11) and Adam Thomas(16) completed the likeable quartet.

Today’s winners were ex Manchester United footballers Frank Stapleton(13) and Stuart Pearson (6) playing alongside Dave Wilson(6) and Kevin Hawkins(10). This team played with German like efficiency to record a solid 83 points and a first win on the Summer Tour this year, very well played chaps.

Many thanks to all players for your brilliant attendance and perseverance in the inclement weather conditions. I hope the rain didn’t spoil your enjoyment of this quality course.

Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours Wilson Classic at Worsley

A full field of Maxitours Competitors turned out for today’s Wilson sponsored Am Am at wonderful Worsley, there were no cancellations or ‘no shows’ so many thanks for your tremendous integrity and support.

Congratulations to the green staff for presenting the course to such a very high standard, there were plenty of compliments throughout the day from our players. Everyone at this lovely Club made us feel very welcome indeed

Paul Baxter blamed his poor performance today on his failure to adapt to the climate. ‘In the world cup it’s the South American teams doing well. It’s the South Manchester teams who’ll play well here today. I’m a lot better playing in cooler North Manchester latitude conditions’ explained the Hopwood man to anyone who was bored enough to listen.

After England’s ‘below par’ performance at this year’s World Cup travelling England fan Des Kelly cancelled his tickets. He wanted to stay well away from the beaches of Brazil but ended up in plenty of sand as his ball regularly found the bunkers at Worsley Golf Club.

Dave Antrobus is now known as the ‘Luis Suarez of Maxitours.’ For 99% of the time dieting Dave is a lovely mild mannered man, however when he gets the smell of a bacon sandwich he just can’t help himself and when he thinks nobody is watching he can often be found crazily chomping on a bap in the corner of the clubhouse.

Messi is starting to set the world Cup alight. Football experts have claimed his low centre of gravity helps him to turn makes him such a great player. Pie loving Rob Hand’s centre of gravity has got lower in recent years however this has not helped his golf and his team struggled to a 25th place finish.

In today’s event the fast running fairways and reachable par fives ensured some excellent scoring on this short but superbly designed course. Northenden’s Ian Broughan(5) and his team of Chris McKane(13), John Parkin(10) and Gary Furlong(4) finished 3rd with an excellent 87 points.

Ray Ward(15) and Geoff Cogswell(18) have not played much golf in recent weeks however the fast running fairways and a few lucky bounces helped the likeable Lancastrians into 2nd place alongside Gary Garner(6) and his green keeper son Jordan(16).

In last year’s Worsley event forgetful Keith Fitzhenry(14) could be seen opening his boot and scratching his head when he discovered he had left his clubs at home. He was delighted with himself when remembered to bring his clubs this morning. Today he did however forget what a bad golfer he usually is and was surprised to play some wonderful golf as he inspired his team to a marvellous 89 point haul and a first win of the year. Playing partners Richard Palmer(12), Mick Mahon(21) and Frank Hindle (14) have all spent years in the doldrums without any success however after much heartache and perseverance things have incredibly improved this season. (Are you listening Roy Hodgson?) Well played chaps.

Alsager’s Dave Marchant, Bob Sinclair, John Rigby and Jeff Andrews were delighted to take the over 60’s title today with 84 points.

Many thanks to Wilson Golf for their kind sponsorship of today’s event.

Maxitours Shotsaver Classic at amazing Conwy

An absolutely stunning day greeted the Maxitours competitors who travelled to Wales for this Shotsaver sponsored Pairs event.

John Stubbs has had some unlikely success with his golf in recent weeks, however off the course his team still think he is ‘slowly losing it’. Today he arrived at Conwy later than planned as he couldn’t find his specially made insoles. ‘I searched high and low in the house, I even emptied the bin to see if I had put them in there!’ Playing partner John Royle arrived to pick him up and suggested he might actually be wearing them. ‘I couldn’t believe it- that was the last place I thought of looking’ said the highly paid retired police Detective.

The greens at Conwy were true and fast, Andy Blake the new pro at Conwy is a great lad and he is doing a terrific job. He told me the story of a recent visitor who asked if it was possible to buy ‘slow rolling golf balls’ as she found the Championship greens were too quick for her fast rolling balls.

The terrific conditions and forward tees should have led to excellent scoring however tricky pin placements and firm approaches meant that just 40 points good enough to take first place.

The Knutsford Golf Club steward Ian Greenough(14) and his talented wife Anne (5)cooked up an excellent 5th place finish with 37 points. This was one short of the experienced Stuart Hilditch(5) and Dave Aden(9). They showed their guile as they teamed up well to score 38 points. Three birdies in the space of four holes on the back nine saw the white haired pairing come home in a wonderful 21 points.

Dave Antrobus(8) usually hits his tee shots wider than a Wayne Rooney corner kick. Today they were arrow straight as he made the most of the fast running fairways. A strong back nine from the on-form Dave Stanhope(12) saw the Vale Royal men take 3rd place.

Pete Hall(3) won the Poulton club championship for a record 6th time on Sunday, today he narrowly missed out on a Martin Kaymer like double when he teamed up with Nick Fletcher(7) to finish second with 40 points.

Taking todays honours was Ashton on Mersey duo Alex Baguley(2) and Dave Hillier(8). Talented Baguley narrowly missed out on winning the Cheshire Matchplay earlier this year when he was beaten in a close semi final. Today his hard work was rewarded with perhaps the biggest win of his career. Well played!
Many thanks to Steve and Jason Ballard from shotsaver for their continued support of Maxitours events.
The next few events are really busy so please give me at least 4 days notice if you need to cancel.

Maxitours at Knutsford Golf Club

Glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze greeted today’s players at leafy Knutsford Golf Club today. Mark Dingle and his hard working team are fast becoming recognised as some of the finest green keepers in Cheshire.

Everyone was very complimentary about the condition of the golf course. ‘Those greens were really good it was a shame it took my team five shots to reach them’ commented Richard Palmer.

‘I wish our greens were like those’ complained one of today’s players who will remain nameless, ‘our green keeper just bought a new machine to improve the greens at our course -its a digger.’

Ben Luscombe tried to cheer himself up before play today. ‘I am afraid my handicap is only 18 but did you know the average british handicap is 22?’ Unfortunately Ben’s game was well below average today as he let his more talented team down.

Warren Loynes loves nothing more than watching period dramas with his wife on Sunday evenings. He really enjoyed pressing the button on the bar to attract the stewardess from her living quarters ‘Its like Downton Abbey in here’ he happily declared. The rest of his team also had fun pressing the buzzer as they got sozzled in the post round afternoon sun.

In today’s event Scoring was very average considering the excellent conditions. There was a solid performance from the Hazel Grove team of Ian Ainsworth(12), Terry Davison(9), Alan Clough(17) and Geoff Haynes(6) who were delighted to finish in 3rd place with 78 points.

Barry Jackson(4) and his Ashton on Mersey side of Dave Beavis(20), Lance Amison(11) and Steve Tate(24) were also shocked to finish second. ‘my team were hopeless out there’ said a stunned Jackson.

Taking todays honours was Mr nice guy Dave Stanhope(12) playing alongside his pal Jim Wardle(10). Bizarrely, with the world cup starting in Brazil tonight these two actually met playing keepy-up football on a beach in Cornwall. The other two members of the team were Knutsford members Joe Stanley(6) and Phil ‘please don’t tell anyone I missed a 9 inch putt on the 15th ‘ Smeathers(7). Joe gave his team a real boost when he made a birdie on the 9th after driving the green on the 307 yard hole.

Well played chaps, very good golf.
Thanks to all who played today. Yours in golf, Tim
