Maxitours at The Knutsford Golf Club.

The new year started in fine style at The Knutsford Golf Club today.

A superbly prepared golf course (thanks to Mark Dingle and his expert team,) fine weather and free doughnuts at the half way house ensured a great day was had by all. Thanks also to our top steward and stewardess Ian and Anne for their excellent hospitality throughout the day.

Christmas had really taken its toll once again this year with many of today’s players looking heavier than usual. Only John Royle from Sale looked trim and he has been off his food with a virus for the last six weeks.

Dave Blood knows the Knutsford golf course drains really well but his team mates thought he was just a little too optimistic as he decided to wear his crisp white waterproof pants despite three days of heavy rain. His pals ridiculed him in the clubhouse but he was delighted to finish the front nine still looking remarkably smart and mud free. Unfortunately his team had the last laugh when some careless eating from Dave resulted in a massive raspberry jam doughnut spillage down his trouser leg.

Colin Roberts(18) and Jeff Andrews(18) from Alsager play in a four ball every week with good mates John and Bob. Today they were only a two so I introduced them to new playing partners Steve McDermott(13) and scratch player John Russell. ‘I’m not used to playing with good golfers’ said a worried Roberts. Colin and Jeff then played great on the front nine before Russell and McDermott moved through the gears to score 24 points on the back nine to finish in 3rd spot with a 43 point haul. ‘It was a pleasure to watch them hit the ball!’ said an awestruck Andrews.

Ernie Els rolled back the years today as he opened up with a 67 to take the lead in the South African Open, today at Knutsford it was also the older players who were at the top of the leader board.

John Hilton(10) and his slightly younger looking partner Richard Blackwell(13) scored 45 points to take 2nd spot. Blackwell magically birdied the 17th for 4 points. Taking the honours were the even older pairing of Jim Reynolds(15) and GB Table tennis coach Brian Keen(20) from Ashton on Mersey. Reynolds was on fire over the closing six holes and his birdie on the 13th narrowly secured the card play-off and their first ever Maxitours victory! Very well played chaps.

Maxitours at Ringway

The final event of 2014 saw nearly 100 players enjoying tropical conditions at Ringway Golf Club.
The greens were really superb which was incredible after so much rain in recent weeks. Many thanks to Club Manager Fiona Cornelius and all her staff for their excellent work today.

Once again nobody let me down and everyone on the start sheet turned up to play which was a great credit to you all considering the dodgy weather forecast. The rain stopped 5 minutes before the shotgun and stayed away throughout the day and then incredibly started again 20 minutes after play finished to give us a great day’s golf!

Play was at a great pace and well over half the field completed their rounds in less than 4 hours today which is terrific – thank you.
Anthony Grimley’s team called a two shot penalty on themselves after teeing off from the wrong markers on the 9th hole, this cost them a top three finish but more importantly the likeable dentist showed his integrity. Tonight he can take out his false teeth and sleep with a clear conscience.

Russell Hollis and his Lymm team looked very happy as they entered the Clubhouse. Regrettably it was spotting the attractive Ringway ladies bridge team enjoying Christmas lunch which raised their spirits, rather than the quality of their golf, as they finished in a lowly 20th position with just 70 points.

Lancastrians Mike Banister(5), Eric Knowles(7), Rob Allen(12) and Chris Davies(10) teamed up well to finish in 3rd spot with 87 points. Davies was the rock of the team and they were delighted to finish on the podium for the second time this season.
Neville Dennis(18) is fast approaching his 77th birthday and a couple of cancer operations earlier this year have not affected his passion for the game. Looking healthier than ever Neville may not hit the ball quite as far as he used to, but the experienced Swintonian knows how to pick a team. Alan Leigh (18) was inspired as they finished second with 90 points. Jimmy O’Reilly(10) and Frank Massey(13) completed the grey haired foursome.

Vertically challenged Mike Spencer(11) is a really lovely man. Mike tried to take his Grandchildren to see Father Christmas last night unfortunately when Santa saw him he immediately told him ‘get back to work’ . He first job was in a butchers shop but the steaks were too high. Today he was inspired and played some terrific golf as his team scored a wonderful 90 points to take first prize. Joe Kirwan(5), Darren Whittaker(13) and Ian King(8) made up the rest of the Bramall team.

Many thanks to all players for your terrific support both today and throughout the year. I have really enjoyed running the events this year and as well as lovely golf courses we have also been blessed with great weather- long may it continue!

Maxitours at St Annes Old Links

St Annes Old Links was the latest terrific golf course to kindly host a Maxitours event. The classic seaside links was thoroughly enjoyed by all our players- many thanks to Jane Donahue and her team. The velvet greens and superbly presented bunkers make this a top venue in the North. The only complaint I had all day was from Ian Ainsworth ‘the main reason I’m playing today is to look at Blackpool Tower, I can’t believe it has got scaffolding on it’ said the disappointed Hazel Grove man.

Jeff Andrews phoned me from his car as he headed towards Lytham from Stoke on Trent. He must have been wearing flip flops as he drove up the M6. ‘Have you got those Footjoy socks I won last week? I’ve left mine at home.’

The second hole was closed due to maintenance work so the excellent par 3 by the clubhouse was used instead. On holing out at the 1st players had to walk to the 3rd tee. Tony Andrews enjoyed the rare experience of striding confidently down the middle of a fairway as he made his way down the closed hole. Terry Davison hit his drive plumb in the middle of the 2nd hole unfortunately he was playing the fourth hole at the time.

The beautiful St Annes Old Links course lies very close to the holiday town of Blackpool. Ex-copper John Stubb’s team played like ‘donkeys’ over their closing holes. The ‘policeman’ wasn’t ‘laughing’ when his team narrowly missed out on the prizes with 88 points.
Scoring was always going to be good on the shortened course with receptive greens and perfectly still conditions. Eddy Sterling’s team played some ‘roller coaster’ golf after scoring 50 points on the front nine. They experienced a ‘big dipper’ in their form and could only manage 40 points on the back nine.

Anthony Grimley(13) has enjoyed many happy hours on holiday in Blackpool and today he played some ‘Illuminating’ golf. He ‘tram lined’ a few putts but didn’t get much ‘pleasure’ when he hit his ball on the ‘beach’ playing the long 18th hole. His team of John Buckley(12), Bernard O’Shaughnessy(21) and Gary Christian(22) backed him up well and they were delighted to finish in 3rd place.

Darren Whittaker(13) is a great golfer who has a horrific grip. This week a farmer near his home course has actually has signed him up to strangle a few turkeys this Christmas. Darren did play well today and his team’s 90 points tied for 3rd place. Joe Kirwan(5), Ian King(8) and Mike Spencer(11) completed the talented line-up.

Likeable Colin Roberts and Lewis Marland both Captained their respective teams well and led by example to finish in 4th and 5th place to also be in the prizes.

Chunky Roy Ainsworth(25) has just taken delivery of a sign for the back of his new car. It reads ‘no pies are left in this vehicle overnight.’ Today he looked to be playing well after rolling in a nice putt on the 18th hole. ‘How is he doing?’ I asked his playing partners Brian Ankers(15), Peter Heald(9) and Mike Verdon(15)- ‘not too bad today,’ replied Ankers ‘he’s only had 2 kit kats.’ The team of Lymm old boys all teamed up well and scored a wonderful 91 points to take 2nd place.

Taking today’s honours were Frank Hindle(15), Richard Palmer(12), John Farnworth(24) and Tony Wilson(9). This team normally struggles and Wilson’s main contribution is usually a couple of funny one liners in the bar after play. Today he steadied the ship on a few occasions and the Mytton Fold regulars were delighted to take top prize. Well played chaps!

Last week legendary John Hilton got a hole in one and today he kindly brought in a large bottle of whisky for our players to enjoy. Amazingly John Raynor had a hole in one today and he also donated a bottle of whisky. A draw took place for any players in teams not in the prizes and losers Steve Latchford and Kevin Hawkins win the bottles.

Ian King lost his Kiawah ball pitch repairer last week at Dunham if anyone found it please can they hand it to me, he says it’s got sentimental value to him. (In other words it cost him a fortune).

Maxitours at Red Hot Ringway.

With only a month to go before the nights start getting shorter and Maxitours golfers were once again enjoying balmy Meditteranian conditions. Manchester in November is the ‘new Algarve’ and well over 100 players enjoyed the superb weather and golf course today.

Many thanks to all the Ringway staff and their stunning Club Manager Fiona for all her hard work and help. How she manages to look more attractive each time we visit Ringway is beyond me.

The average round time today was a fraction over 4 hours which was superb, many thanks for your consideration of others and fast play.

Gemma Collins lasted just 2 days in the Australian rainforest before she felt the heat and left the set of I’m a Celebrity this week. Dave Harlow is a bit of a Celebrity in nearby Knutsford and his team lasted just 3 holes at Ringway today. They picked up 4 shots early in their round before Dave and his men decided to visit the jungle on more than one occasion. Things went rapidly downhill from the 4th hole and they all went home very hungry indeed.

Darren Whittaker is famous after stating last week that ‘I always play poor golf on a Monday.’ Today Darren turned up in a positive frame of mind as Maxitours was back to its usual Thursday slot. ‘I look forward to watching the Apprentice on Wednesday evening and then playing good golf in the morning’ said the likeable Poynton man. Darren was indeed back to his mid week best as he rattled in three birdies for his team. Unfortunately partner Mike Spencer struggled with his simple task of playing at least one good hole during the course of the day. ‘You’re fired’ snarled Whittaker in the clubhouse after play.

It is always great listening to the pre round clubhouse talk when I run my Maxitours events. Chunky Roy Ainsworth and his senior mates from Lymm golf club were very entertaining this morning. They never cease to be amazed with how technology has moved on during their lifetime. ‘Apparently you can even print stuff from this latest new iphone I’ve got!’ informed Brian Ankers looking quizzically at his latest toy, before asking, ‘How do you get the paper in?’

In today’s event yellow tees, the truly superb greens and benign conditions led to some excellent scoring. Even Alf Shillitoe and his team managed to score 86 points to finish in 4th place!

Mottram Hall’s Richard Blackwell(13), Andy Hamlett(10), Ron Jolley(14) and John Hilton(12) kept up their good form to finish in 3rd. Hamlett picked up a very useful five points on their penultimate hole after he holed his superb approach into the tough 6th.

The low handicap team from Didsbury scored 88 points and two classy birdies from Phil Vokes(3) and Barney Ross(5) on the last securing second place. Paul Sherlock(5) and Kevin Hamilton(scr) made up the rest of the talented team.

Taking first place with 89 points were Maxitours regulars Roger Percival(7), Pete Atherton(11), Martin France(3) and Ed Wilkinson(6). Despite being regulars you may not be familiar with their names as these four are usually hopeless and never feature in the prizes. Today they picked up 9 shots in their closing five holes to go home very happy indeed!

Sam Leach pipped legend Neville Dennis to win nearest the pin on the 13th hole after both men hit superb shots within 10 inches of the hole.
