Maxitours at Hesketh Golf Club

Maxitours players once again enjoyed golfing in glorious weather! Wonderful Hesketh Golf Club was the historic setting for today’s event and all the players enjoyed this classy half links, half parkland golf course.

Many of the world’s greatest players have graced Heskeths fairways and there are also plenty of fantastic pictures, trophies and memorabilia in the lovely Clubhouse.

The hospitality and catering really was superb throughout the day. Unfortunately after his recent highly publicised successful diet Dave Antrobus was back to his old ways this morning. He hit a new low when he was seen enjoying a two course breakfast. (several biscuits with his tea, followed by a full english breakfast).

Another chunky player, Roy Ainsworth, was delighted with his solid performance today as he returned a creditable 41 points. ‘My golf has improved since I started going to the gym’ he declared ‘twice a week I spend 20 minutes on the treader, 20 minutes on the rower and 20 minutes on the running machine!’

‘Do you turn them on?’ asked his playing partner Peter Heald, looking him up and down.

Hesketh is the oldest of the great Southport golf clubs and its clubhouse and course are both steeped in history, John Broadhurst(13) from North Manchester is also quite old and he is also steeped in history. He teamed up with jovial Ruel Spence(12) to score 44 points and a career best 5th place Maxitours finish.

Anthony Grimley(13) is a lovely, likeable and softly spoken dentist, however in recent weeks due to a loss of form his partners have complained that playing with him was like pulling teeth. Today he ‘drilled’ in a few putts early in his round and ‘capped it off’ with two closing pars as he played great golf and finished tied in a career best 5th place partnering Archie Tahir(4).

The low handicappers in the field made the most of the 4 par fives that all played less than 460 yards off the yellow tees. Mark Ashworth (+2) birdied three of them on his way to 45 points playing with Howard Rishton (12). Aiden Hoosen (2) and Ian Fairbrother(5) started their day with three gross birdies and finished with another two as they also scored 46 points to finish third.

Tytherington’s Steve Lowe (11) and Steve Pinnington (12) enjoyed the fast running fairways to take 2nd place also on 46 points. Winning the card play off was Pleasingtons Stuart Coupe(10) and Astbury’s Mike Johnson(6). Ex rally driver Coupe enjoyed taking the racing line on the dog legs and his co- driver Johnson moved through the gears on the back nine.

Very Well played chaps.

JP & Brimelow AM AM at Prestbury Golf Club
Prestigious Prestbury was the lovely setting for this Maxitours event. The Club members I spoke with today were all very friendly and welcoming and brought back very happy memories of when I worked there as a lean, fresh faced, full-haired assistant professional in the early 90’s. The course was superb and when presented in this condition is arguably the best in Cheshire.
Today’s sponsors kindly provided tees and pencils for today’s competitors. George Maddison complained the lead was too hard in the HB pencils ‘I prefer a softer 2b pencil to write with.’
‘What the heck are you worrying about-there’s been no lead in your pencil for a number of years’ quipped one of his team mates.
Sun tanned Colin Lynch was attention seeking in the clubhouse once again before play today. ‘Has anyone handed in my Ferrari California car keys?’ He asked the shapely blonde barmaid on more than one occasion.
Policeman Steve Boland was working hard keeping the streets of Davyhulme safe throughout last night and this morning. After a few hours pottering in his police car he was busily trying to enjoy his mid-shift McDonald’s burger and coke. He was suddenly called into action and had to respond quickly to a late emergency call ‘Yes, I can make up your fourball later’ he informed john Hilditch who was one short.
Single figure golfer and part time comedian John Anderton returned from yet another vacation with his wife to play in today’s Maxitours event. ‘We just had a great holiday in the Middle East but did you know that in Dubai they never show the Flintstones on TV but Abu Dhabi do.’

Ray Jones’ men struggled to accumulate a measly 63 points today. The team all work on quality control at Kelloggs in Trafford Park and they play in Maxitours events when their shift pattern allows them. ‘I was as much use as a soggy cornflake’ said a depressed Jones.

Third place in todays JP & Brimelow Masters AM AM went to the Knutsford team of Mike Dobson, Nigel Davenport, Rick Heap and Dave Kitson. Big hitting Dobson likes the tough holes and he made a quality birdie on the uphill 9th. Smooth swinging Davenport also contributed with a class birdie on the testing 13th and Rick Heap and Dave Kitson were also well on form.
Play started in perfect golfing conditions and Darren Whittakers(14) fourball was out in a best of the day 47 points. However a 20 minute morning torrential downpour drowned any hopes of success as they scored 39 points on the back nine to finish second. Neil Worthington(19) Mike Spencer(12)and Joe Kirwan(5) made up the quality team.
Winning today was the young Prestbury team of Dan Benson(2), Ollie Benson(18), Saif Rehan(18) and Nick Howsley(6). A seven point haul at the first gave them a great start and a solid team effort saw a first win of the year for the likeable quartet. Very well played!
Many thanks to Eddie Ellis and John Pratt from JP& Brimelow for their continued kind car sponsorship and for their support of today’s event.

Maxitours at lovely Crewe

Once again perfect English Summer Golfing conditions greeted today’s Maxitours competitors. The James Braid designed Crewe masterpiece is the most Southerly venue on the Tour and those who travelled were rewarded with an immaculately presented golf course. Nearly all the players entered the Clubhouse after play and expressed how much they enjoyed this quality Cheshire course.

Over the past five years Maxitours regular Dave Antrobus has been on the receiving end of plenty of ridicule in my post-match reports. Hungry Dave has been described fairly recently as ‘portly’, ‘full figured’,’ heavy treading’ and ‘a salad dodger’. After a months’ break due to work commitments Dave turned up today looking really trim after a successful diet. When asked why he decided to lose weight he replied: ‘I became a victim of cyber abuse.’

Peter Short works on security at Manchester Airport and spends most days twiddling his thumbs or confiscating sun cream. Today he came off the course to be told about the Doha flight being escorted into Ringway by three RAF jets. He looked like the head fireman from Trumpton ‘An emergency? A real emergency? Bloody hell I can’t believe I missed it!’ said the devastated 8 handicapper.

Terry Davison nearly missed his tee time when his Sat Nav took him past Crewe station twice this morning. The likeable single figure talkative geordie did however find the flagstick on the 5th hole as he won nearest the pin in style. Retired civil engineer Steve Foxcroft also took nearest the Pin on the lovely 8th hole and he was delighted to narrowly beat fellow Knutsford member Dr David Arthur. ‘I’m not bothered I’ve got a much bigger pension than him’ Declared the newly retired GP.

Richard Palmer’s start time was getting nearer as he waited for his full English Breakfast to arrive, ‘your off in twenty minutes’ I reminded him. ‘I’d prefer to miss my start time than miss my breakfast’ he quickly retorted.
In today’s event Hazel Grove perfume supplier Ian Ainsworth(12) guided his team into 3rd place. Terry Davison(9) , Bernard McDonald(14) and Alan Clough(17) all scented victory before dropping points on the tough 14th hole.

Everyone likes the Alsager quartet of Colin Roberts(18), John Rigby(14), Dave Marchant(15) and Bob Sinclair(14). The Maxitours regulars are terrific blokes who love their golf and play five or six times a week. Today they were all magnificent and Sinclair was the pick of the bunch finishing with a solid four on the tough 18th hole as they finished in a seasons best 2nd place.

Taking today’s honours were last weeks’ sponsors the ‘ETIQUS watch’ team. Terry Hayward(11) from Cavendish had the finest back nine of his career as he knocked in four huge birdie putts in a six hole spell. ‘I felt like Sergio Garcia’ said the Buxton man. Prestbury’s Chris Adams (12), Gary Butler(8) and colour coordinated Jason Waite(11) made up the rest of the happy team. Great golf chaps. Well played.
I have some really popular venues over the next few weeks and places are in high demand, please give me at least 5 days notice if you need to cancel.

Thanks for all your support today and for continuing to play the game in such a great spirit, it was really great to get back to work after an enjoyable family holiday.

Yours in Golf, Tim.

Many thanks to PGA professional MatthewTurnock for running todays Maxitours event so efficiently, I return from my family holiday in sunny Wales tomorrow so normal service will be resumed next week, here is his report:

Just before the first Maxitours golfers teed off at 10.30am Tour player Simon Dyson and Man Utd legend Paul Scholes along with an entourage of another six players could be seen throwing up their balls on the first tee for what looked to be a possible big money match. It later transpired that Dyson shot a 9 under par 63. By coincidence Dyson’s tour caddie James Baker was playing today in the Maxitours pairs event but unfortunately he not quite match his bosses performance.

Clubhouse hospitality was excellent and the staff were very efficient with the delivery of many bacon and sausage baps which were rapidly devoured before play.

Comments on the condition of the course were very complimentary and the weather held to provide favourable scoring conditions.

Maxitours at Hazel Grove

Another stunning and steamy day greeted today’s talented field of Maxitours Competitors.
There were very positive comments about the quality of the putting surfaces and excellent presentation of this Alasdair Mackenzie masterpiece. Hazel Grove when it is prepared to this very high standard is a real pleasure to play. Thanks to the Green staff and committee for all their hard work.
Before his recent successes and new found fame as the new ‘Shotsaver Order of Merit leader’ Dave Stanhope was known as Mr Nice guy. Today he strutted into the Clubhouse demanding a public apology ‘here is my driver’s licence I was born in 1947, can you please let my fellow players know I am only 67 and not 68 years old as you stated in your last report.’ ‘He’s changed!’ said good friend and critique Phil Smeathers.

Health conscious Port Vale fan Colin Roberts knows how to rehydrate and maintain his finely tuned mineral sodium levels after a game of golf in the Mediterranean Stockport heat : ‘Can I have a pint of bitter and a large portion of Chips with plenty of salt please’. He asked the Hazel Grove barmaid after his round.

Today the Commonwealth games began in the City of Culture, Glasgow. Well spoken Richard Blackwell is certainly not Common but he is pretty Wealthy and the wine coinnessiour celebrated by playing some great golf. An incredible outward 25 points playing alongside Clitheroe’s Paul Burrows saw them as early pace setters however they collected just 7 points on the final five holes to finish 4th with 42 points.
Charles Herbert has not featured in the top half of the field in recent weeks however today he played alongside Ross Birch and was delighted with a third place finish despite not scoring on the 15th hole. ‘We blew it’ was his post round summary.
Top Manchester DJ Carl Kennedy has played all the big clubs in the City, today his partner Ollie Benson was dancing with delight on the Hazel Grove dance floor as Kennedy parred all five of the toughest holes on the course. ‘It’s great to be back playing well’ raved Kennedy after finishing in second place.
New Maxitours regulars Simon Conway and Mark Williams from Mottram Hall took today’s honours with a hard fought 43 points. Conway birdied two of the tough par threes and then put the icing on his cake with a wonderful three at the last to secure their first ever victory. Well played chaps.
Pat Keenan was delighted to win the ETIQUS Nearest the Pin Challenge as his seven wood finished just twelve feet from the pin on the tricky par three second hole. He win a superb new ETIQUS watch www.ETIQUS.co.uk courtesy of Gary Butler from ETIQUS. Playing partner Mike Stephenson gave him this compliment ‘I have to admit that it was a great shot, in fact it was the best shot he hit all day, he was lousy on the other 17 holes’
Please take a look at the ETIQUS website to view the exciting new range of watches for golfers.
Many thanks for all who played in todays event, see you next week at World Class Hopwood. Yours in Golf, Tim.
