Maxitours at Davenport Golf Club

Glorious blue skies once again greeted Maxitours competitors. Davenport Golf Club was today’s sun drenched venue and as the amazing summer weather continues more than one Maxitours player was actually seen applying sun cream before play on this lovely October morning.

The catering at Davenport is superb and the golf course was also in immaculate condition for the time of year, many thanks to Tony Stevens, Elaine and all at this very well run and friendly club.

Nature is a wonderful thing and it is at this time of the year when squirrels instinctively know they must search for acorns and horse chestnuts to stock up for the long winter ahead. Frank Hindle is planning on playing plenty of golf this winter. He was seen disturbing the wildlife as he too foraged in the Davenport undergrowth searching for his balls and stocking up on titleists for the coming barren months.

‘I love that course’ said Ray Jones who remained cheerful despite finishing last. ‘I do find it hard though, it’s so tough it punishes the odd wayward shot and the even ones as well’.

John Stubbs(19) looked like Tom Watson having a bad day when he came off the course after victory slipped through his fingers at the last.’ I’ve taken four to get down from the edge of the green and I’ve also lost my car keys’. Playing partner John Royle(17) looked like an exasperated Phil Mickleson ‘he was a very bad captain’ was all he could mutter after they missed out by a single shot.

Stamford’s Keith Coxon and Ian Trow finished in third spot also with 41 points. There was an excellent finish from Trow who picked up two birdies in the last five tough holes.

Wilmslow’s Jim Caldwell(10) was the Captain of his team and he looked happier than Paul McGinley when he came home in 24 points alongside partner Steve Sutton(10). Billionaire Jim was ‘Donaldsonesque’ over the closing holes and hit the wedge shot of his life to set up a closing birdie at the last to take 2nd place also on 41 points.

Golf crazy Joe Kirwan(5) and Mike Spencer(11) from Bramall scored just one point on their opening hole. They then relaxed and played really solid golf over the next 17 holes to score 42 points and take their first victory of the season with a surprisingly average score. Kirwan’s four point birdie on the 15th hole was the pivotal moment in their round. Great golf, well played chaps.

With just 5 events remaining the Shotsaver Order of Merit is really close this year. There has been a wide variety of winners during the Summer season and Richard Blackwell leads the way. Results from Vale Royal Abbey

You could feel the tension building in anticipation as one of the greatest golfing events of the year was about to kick off – no not the Ryder Cup but the Vale Royal Abbey Am Am.

After mixed weather at the start of play the odd light shower gave way stunning sunshine which cracked the Vale Royal flags. The clubhouse was buzzing with all players trying to catching a glimpse on the TV of the morning Ryder Cup matches teeing off before heading off to do their own golfing battles (some faring better than others).

The occasion obviously inspired a number of players but none more so than 3 handicapper Andy Hall from Cheadle who came in proclaiming “I’ve had a blinder” managing to shoot a personal best score of 68 Gross with no less than 6 birdies, 3 of which were consecutive from the 3rd to the 5th, to assist his team to a 90 point haul.

At the other end of the spectrum poor Anton Ellis’s team got off to a flying stop and could not get out of first gear in a disappointing 49 point tally – this game can be cruel !

Many stayed behind in the bar after play to soak up the atmosphere and it was fantastic to see local Macclesfield Pro Jamie Donaldson score his first Ryder Cup point partnering Lee Westwood – well done on your debut Jamie. The final groups came up the 18th with their torches to end a well supported event.

Dear Maxitours Golfer,

Here is my new and best ever Maxitours Winter Schedule. I have managed to add the classic Lancashire seaside links courses of Fairhaven and St Annes Old to an already star studded schedule which includes all of Cheshire finest!

Every Golf Club has once again welcomed us back this year and this is due in no small part to your extremely high standards of course etiquette and also your tremendous support of the home club catering and bar facilities, many, many thanks for that.

I will of course continue to charge no membership fee and I am able to keep things simple by accepting payment on the day due to your loyalty and integrity. On the vast majority of events last year there were absolutely no absentees from the start sheet which is terrific.

I hope you have a great Winter season and continue to play your Maxitours golf in the true Spirit of the game,

Thanks for your continued support,

Yours in Golf,

Tim

Please remember all players must be members of a recognised golf club and handicaps must be active (on how did i do)in order to win a top 3 prize.

Maxitours Shotsaver Pairs at Reddish Vale

Dr Alister Mackenzie majically plied his trade over 100 years ago on the rolling Cheshire fairways of Reddish Vale in Stockport. Designing a golf course with such high quality sloping fairways and meandering river was superb preparation for the Augusta masterpiece he built 15 years or so later.
I am sure he would be impressed to see the way his course was presented so magnificently by the Reddish green keepers and satisfied to see his masterpiece enjoyed by so many golfers today.

Everyone at this lovely historic club were extremely friendly and host professional Andy Myers is always a real pleasure to deal with.

As we all know there were three massively important ballots taking place today.
Firstly, there was the welcome news that the R and A moved into the 21st century when their members backed the positive decision to allow female members into their club.
Secondly, without hungry Dave Antrobus in their regular four ball to sway the vote Dave Stanhope’s team made the incorrect decision not to partake in a pre round bacon sandwich. ‘These are in the top 3 bacon butties I have ever tasted’ claimed bacon bap expert Phil Vokes from a rival team.
Thirdly, all of Scotland voted in their referendum for independence today. Scotsman Dave McCallum desperately wished on more than one occasion that he was independent after helplessly watching on as playing partner Kevin Barker struggled to master the lightening fast greens.

Frank Hindle was another to struggle on the superb greens which were running at 12 on the stimp meter. ‘He hit the ball further with his putter than with his driver on several holes’ complained playing partner John Farnworth.

Henry Cotton was a great admirer of the Reddish Vale course and he loved the 16th hole describing it as ‘the best looking, most fair and probably the most difficult hole I have ever played’. Kevin Hamilton(scr) found it no problem as he made a three on his way to an impressive 4th place finish playing alongside the likeable Paul Dalby(4).

Sale Golf Club’S senior duo Guy Hall(11) and Keith Coxon(11) only scored 1 point on the famous 16th hole. Guy then showed his fighting spirit with excellent pars on the final two holes to take 5th place also with 41 points.

Maxitours nice guys Barry Jackson(4) and Steve Yates from Ashton on Mersey finished late in the day and they were delighted to finish in a career best 3rd spot. Poulton Park’s Mike Delooze(9) and Phil Lockett(7) were devastated to miss out on victory by a single shot. Phil called for a local taxi to take him home after three putting from inside a yard at the last!

Taking today’s honours were Bramall’s Alan Demmy(9) and Patrick Keenan(17) with 43 points. Neither player recorded a gross birdie all day however the wealthy duo were one of the few teams to master the Augusta- like greens and a great team effort saw the popular duo win a superb shotsaver watch each.

With the Ryder Cup just over a week away it is expected that both teams will compete at 110% yet play in the true spirit of the game, many thanks to all Maxitours players today for also playing with such respect for this terrific game. Thanks to Shotsaver for their marvellous continued sponsorship.
Come on Europe!

( Pete Short used to train spot when he was a child, nowadays he collects golf scorecards and needs to find a golf club beginning with the letter X to complete his collection. If anyone can help please let me know.)
