Maxitours at Conwy

Maxitours at Conwy Golf Club

Conwy Golf Club was enjoyed by one hundred and ten competitors who teed off in today’s event. The course was so good considerate Giles Terry actually hit his tee shot onto the roof of the green keepers sheds as he played the 17th hole so that he could go over and thank the lads personally for all their terrific work.

The sun really came out for a glorious afternoons golf, Steve Brown was in the bar ‘I think its clouding over and getting dark’ he said before his long suffering mates pointed out he was looking through the dark tinted window.

Ron Hopkins is a Maxitours regular and world renowned gynaecologist and he played once again this week. Rather worryingly he lost his putter on 2nd hole and has absolutely no idea where he put it.

Steve Garnett(11) from Davyhulme Golf Club played with his talented twin boys today- Sam(+1) and Josh (scr). He thought his team mates were pointing out dead sheep on the welsh hillside all the way round. ‘It’s STILL EWE’ they kept telling him as he happily three putted most of the tricky Conwy greens.

Dave Stanhope’s(11) day went from bad to worse. First he was drawn to partner tubby Dave Antrobus(7), then he was narrowly pipped into 3rd place on a card play off in the main event after scoring a career best 43 points. Most upsetting of all for the High Legh member was when his post round packet of crisps were blown off the balcony just seconds after he opened them. Devastated Stanhope nearly fell through the railings as he tried in vain to rescue his favourite nibbles.

Second place went to Kevin Reeves(17) and Bob Chester(8) from Lymm. Kevin is a well known vet who specialises in greyhound rehabilitation. He has been known to chase a few rabbits himself during his round but today Kevin stayed on the fairways and was delighted to take second place with 43 points.

Late in the day the wind dropped a little and Charles Herbert(16) and Ross Birch(10) made the most of the conditions to score an excellent 45 points. Ross had a tremendous finish when he picked up 4 points on both the tough 16th and 18th holes after making excellent birdies. Well played chaps.

Many thanks to all players for your terrific support today, Tim.

Maxitours at Fabulous Worsley Golf Club

Worsley Golf Club was presented in immaculate condition for todays Maxitours event. The course is ranked as one of the very best in Manchester and this was confirmed by the extremely positive feed back from the players. Many thanks to head pro (and all round nice guy) Andy Cory and everyone at his club for making us feel so welcome.

Worsley kindly provide rakes on the first tee for members and visitors to use on their course. Tony Porter made full use of his when he visited 10 bunkers during his eventful round. After his game he took the rake into the pro shop as it needed to be regripped.

Ryan Giggs was trying to do his peaceful early morning yoga session in his upstairs bedroom and he was annoyed to be interrupted by Ron Hopkins who screamed for joy after making an excellent eagle 2 on the 5th hole. Hopkins is well known in medical circles and is rated as one of the top gynacological experts in the country. His pal Colin Lynch reckons he is so good he once wallpapered his landing through his letterbox.

Absent minded Keith Fitzhenry likes to be prepared and he packed his battery, trolley, sun cream, shoes, cap and waterproofs into his car this morning. Unfortunately he forgot his golf clubs. Luckily Craig the assistant pro kindly lent him his set to use and he was delighted to see them returned with the sweetspots all still in immaculate condition.

Stuart Roache is a terrific David Bowie tribute act and he not only has the look of the 70’s legend he can sing like him as well. Unfortunately he let his team of Alan Frazer, Colin Lynch, and Ron Hopkins down when was unable to impersonate a decent golfer today and they had to settle for 4th place with 85 points.

Lee Tilley is playing the golf of his life at the moment and his Saddleworth team of Dean Jagger, Mike and Paul Norbury went out in the wettest conditions and they scored a terrific 86 points for third place.

Second place was the Maxitours legends team of old Neville Dennis, sweet swinging Frank Massey, chipmaster John Reilly and Irishman Jimmy ‘five daughters’ O’Reilly. The team was first out this morning and enjoyed a waterproof free round.

Taking the honours were Phil Ashcroft, Ken Ogden, Graham Robins and Gary Garner who enjoyed their first success of the summer with a majestic 88 points, well played chaps. Many thanks for your support and I hope you all enjoyed your day.

Maxitours at Cavendish and Worsley start times

‘for when the one great scorer comes to write against your name he writes not that you won or lost but how you played the game’

Cavendish Golf Club Am Am

There were a few nervous sheep in Derbyshire as Maxitours once again visited the terrific Cavendish Golf Club in Buxton.

In 1925 Dr Alastair Mackenzie designed the course and the excellent layout was one of the reasons Bobby Jones chose him as the architect for his Augusta course which was built just 8 years later.

‘That’s a great course but I thought you said it was flat’ said a gullible and sweaty Roger McMullen after his round.

Before play Neville Dennis proudly showed me his thirty five year old Cavendish scorecard which showed an ‘ace’ on the par three 4th hole. Today Neville could only manage a ‘2’ on that particular hole which officially confirms he is now twice as bad as he used to be.

Buxton is also famous for its pure water and erratic Lewis Marland seemed to be searching for the Buxton spring as he visited nearly every hazard on the course.

Phil Mickleson at the US Open, Jimmy White at the Crucible, Ivan Lendl at Wimbledon and Mark Wheeler(12) at Cavendish are four sports giants who narrowly missed out on the title of their dreams. His Upton by Chester team of Dave Murphy (11), Russell Brookes(7) and Ken Fletcher(9) all played great and they returned a score of 81 points to take the early lead.

Barry Harrison(7) has been struggling with his game and he looked as confident as an Australian batsman before he went out to play today. Luckily he was backed up by his terrific Denton team of Andy Bradley(6), Dave Hookes(5) and Steve Jenkinson (9) who had 3 twos! They recorded a terrific 88 points to take the title late on the day by a resounding 7 shots!

Marvellous Manchester Hopwood

A blustery day greeted the full field of Maxitours competitors at the marvellous Manchester Hopwood Golf Course today.

This phenomenal course is now a favourite venue for many players and PGA Pro Brian Connor and his dazzling wife Geraldine run a terrific service for their members. Everyone also enjoys the cuisine and it was interesting to note the Cheshire based members of the tour ask for ketchup or red sauce with their bacon baps, the Lancastrians favour brown sauce or as I was informed it is known to the locals -Manchester gravy.

‘Last minute’ Steve Parle normally rushes on to the 1st tee chewing his bacon sandwich or tucking him self in. This week he read an article on the importance of correct preparation so he arrived 2 hours before his tee time, read the paper and had a leisurely lunch. He then went through a full warm up and practice session on the range and putting green. On the first hole he sliced his tee shot into the deep rough and as he tugged his trolley through the long grass the wheel fell off.

‘Mark Wheeler had some bad lies out there’ said scouser Dave Murphy about his playing partner. ‘His worst one was when he told me he was on form.’

Wild swinging Frank Hindle is famous for marking his first ball of the day FH1 if that is lost he then marks his second ball FH2. Towards the end of his round FH11 was seen whizzing over the railway line running alongside the 18th fairway.

In todays event due to the excellent greens the scoring was very good. Even Mike Hall(21) and Des Kelly(16) managed 44 points! Scratch golfer John Russell teamed up with ‘I nearly get a shot a hole’ Gary Denman(18) and they also played great golf to accumulate 45 points.

Aging Darren Whittaker(15) and young Alex Elliot(2) also teamed up well together. Alex had two birdies but was outdone by his fifteen handicap partner who incredibly birdied the 5th, 8th, 12th and 18th holes to secure second place.

Taking the honours today was the retired accountant John Royle and his good pal the retired policeman John Stubbs. The wealthy duo usually settle each week for mid table mediocrity but today they ‘had a day out’. Both contributed 9 times as they scored 47 points in one of the performances of the year. Great golf chaps.

Many thanks to all players for your support today.
