Many thanks to Top Coach and PGA Pro Matthew Turnock who ran todays event whilst I was enjoying my Super Bocks in Portugal:

I was greeted as I walked into the the clubhouse by a smiling Malc Wells and James West (son of the late Roly West, much respected PGA Pro) just as their full English breakfasts arrived, I think they’d camped out especially to fill up in the knowledge of the tough conditions that lay ahead.

The weather initially looked to be fine and the early starters definitely had the best of it with clubhouse leaders John Reilly and Jimmy O’Reilly posting a respectable 40 points. Soon after the pairings of Paul Dalby and Phil Vokes plus Mark Wheeler and Dave Murphy matched that score but by then the weather was taking a turn for the worst with rain, hail and sleet sweeping the course at regular intervals.

Just before 5pm the weather at last finally improved for the remainder of the field with some glorious sunshine.

As Dave Antrobus, Dave Harlow, Dave Stanhope and Phil Smeathers sat in the clubhouse contemplating what could have been I offered them the remainder of my generous bowl of chips much to their delight “We never get chips from Tim” was the reply “you can definitley come again” they said.

Geoff Chapman and Mike Kulik had a mare and before leaving enquired “What’s the lowest score today” to which I confirmed that their 24 points was indeed bottom of the pile. They felt no better when I told them that the next worst score of 25 points was by Carl Kennedy who did not even have a partner !!!!!!!! The demoralised pair were consoled by the uncontrollable laughter of their partners Martin Williams and Neil Richie.

As the day drew to a close Richard Blackwell and Andy Hamlett came in with 41 points which was looking like winning until Dan Houghman and Gary Hempstead came in with a superb 43 points.

Winner of Nearest Pin on the 13th was Lee Parr and Nearest pin in 2 on 18th was Marcus McKechnie.

There were three 2’s but the only entrant was Warren Simister (Jimmy O’Reily, George Maxwell and A. Bradley unfortunately did not enter) who wins approx. £90 worth of balls.

NB – A high lob Pinseeker Sand Iron was handed in – I will pass on to Tim for reclaiming at either Tytherington next Thursday 30th or Sandiway on 4th June.

Maxitours at Vale Royal

Vale Royal was once again presented in tremendous condition for today’s Maxitours event. The BBC were wrong yet again with their negative forecasting and the weather was ideal for a fantastic day on the links. Many thanks indeed to Ian Embury and his excellent hard working team at this stunning venue.

Jimmy O’Reilly, Pete O’Neill and Frank Massey have all played the memorable Vale Royal course many times. Today Irishman Jimmy was deep in conversation as he happily whizzed past the golf club exit and drove his team to all the way to Portal. As they started to unload their clubs quick thinking Frank looked around and asked ‘what the hell are we doing here?’

James Emmett brought his strange talking team over from ‘Alifacks in Yarkshurrrrr’ . They went home empty handed after teeing off in completely the wrong direction on the 5th hole. How they won the War of the Roses we’ll never know.

Alan Pengelly, Paul Bishop, Richard Blackwell and Andy Hamlett played together for the first time today and they were very happy with 85 points and 4th place. Phil Sharp(18), Malc Wells(4), Adam Hart(8) and Bob Vickers(7) love the four man team events and they finished in third with 86 points.

A team of four very posh scousers finished in second place. Peter Kenny(13), Martyn Edmunds(14), Mick King(18) and Andy Morgan(6) are wealthy land buyers and surveyors for Belway homes and others, today they built up an excellent score as the Wallasey team scored 86 points with an excellent back nine.

Pleasington’s Stuart Coupe(11) John Hughes(9) Mark Robinson(10) and Martin Jump(17) took first prize with a terrific 90 point haul. They knew it was going to be their day when Mark and John both chipped in for birdies to collect 4 points each on the tricky 13th hole. Modest Hughes commented ‘If I say so myself I was absolutely bloody terrific today’ Great golf chaps, well played.

This evening Vale Royal was hosting an upmarket function for an expensive local private school. A few glamorous ‘yummy mummys’ passed through the clubhouse bar. An wise old member of the tour who had been very closely monitoring the situation downed the remnants of his fourth pint and declared ‘I’m off home to see the wife- remember beauty is only a light switch away’.

Delamere Forest results and Ringway start times

Maxitours at Delamere Forest .

Glorious Delamere Forest was bathed in sunshine as the full field of players teed off in todays Maxitours event. Everyone enjoyed the dry fast running fairways and excellent Delamere greens. The brisk Easterly wind prevented anyone from overheating in the intense sun!

It was good to see Barry Horrox squeeze into the Clubhouse today after a recent golfing trip to America. When asked if the golf trip was successful he replied:
‘I enjoyed the deep fried cheesecake best’

Neil Todd knows how to boost his partner’s confidence before play. ‘There’s absolutely no point in you entering the ball sweep, you’ve got no chance of making a two’ he advised his 23 handicap partner Alistair Culpin at registration.

It was great to see what high quality clientele Maxitours events have started to attract. Today two retired, respected and wealthy Cheshire doctors actually played in the same fourball. Dr Dave Arthur claims to be the cleverer of the two but Dr Martin Beresford doesn’t care because he has a lower handicap.

Before todays event John Hilditch(14) from Portal was pining for regular partner Ian Bartholomew who had a knee operation last week. ‘Is this new chap R. Humphries you’ve put me with any good?’ he quizzed before play.
The two hit it off beautifully to record 44 points and take 5th place. ‘Thanks for introducing me to tall dark Russell(18) I really like him. Whats his phone number?’ he whispered as he handed in his card.

Ian Gauden(17) and Bill Gillings(13), two lovely seniors from Davyhulme, teed off on the tenth and had the best nine holes of their long golfing lives as they went out in 26 points. The tougher front nine saw them back to playing their usual rubbish, but they just managed to hang on and scrape 44 points and were delighted to take 3rd spot.

John Bent(3) and Ian Self(4) from Didsbury played some really stunning golf today. Benty was solid on the front nine picking up a couple of birdies but Ian played the back nine in four under par gross! He birdied the last three holes to finish in some style.

Taking todays honours were Maxitour regulars Wilmslows Alex Jerman(6) and Richard Blackwell(14). It is well known to Maxitours players that the main reason chunky Jerman loves Delamere is the huge sausage rolls sold behind the bar. Very likeable Jerman teamed up with even more likeable wine merchant Richard Blackwell and they both recorded their first ever win with 46 points. Fearing another public humiliation in the post match report hungry Jerman celebrated his win with a small bowl of soup.

Many thanks to all who played today.
Yours in golf,
Tim.

Maxitours at superb Sandiway

Sandiway Golf Club Manager Yvonne Bould and her excellent team made us feel very welcome today. Thank you also to the Head Greenkeeper who was up bright and early rolling the greens before play and he presented his course in immaculate condition for so early in the season.

The stunning course was built by ICI in the 1920’s as a facility for its Cheshire employees and the wealthy Northwich middle classes. The Clubhouse was built in such a way that it could be turned into two semi-detatched houses if the Golf Club wasn’t successful! The Sandiway course has since matured into a classic and is now recognised as perhaps the best in Cheshire ?

John Royle was debating whether or not to tackle a Sandiway scone in the clubhouse after play, ‘he played like a pudding so he may as well have one’ muttered his long suffering partner John Stubbs.

Nigel Eckersley(13) this week retires after a very successful year as Knutsford GC Captain. With the pressure lifted he is already back to playing his best golf and despite being paired with Bob Sutton(18) he still managed to finish in a very commendable 6th place.

Seventy-seven year old Manchester golfing legend Neville Dennis(15) won on the horses at Cheltenham last week after he backed a couple of outsiders. Today he once again beat the odds and scored 43 points playing alongside carthorse Frank Massey(11) to finish in 5th place after a card play off.

There is a famous golfing phrase: ‘If you can’t play golf, get a good partner’. Wise John Hughes(9) played alongside Mark Ashworth(+2). They scored an excellent 43 points to finish in 4th position. John was delighted to get on the card three times.

Badly dressed Paul Dalby(4) and Phil Vokes(4) continued their recent good form as the two talented Didsbury men finished in third place with 43 points. Tytheringtons Andy Taylor(12)and Martin Firth(3) took second place. Firth made terrific birdies on the tough 14th and 17th holes to clinch the card play off.

Taking top spot was the unlikely sounding combination of ‘Tinkler and Hackett’.
Pete Tinkler(15) birdied the par three 6th and 11th holes however it was Steve Hackett(13) who was the main points scorer. The likeable Macclesfield GC steward celebrated his win in typical golf club steward fashion as he enjoyed tasting the wide variety of beers on offer in the Sandiway Clubhouse.

Highly respected Sandiway Club professional Bill Laird retires in a couple of weeks and I would like to take this opportunity to wish him a happy and healthy retirement.

Thanks for your support today,
Yours in golf,
Tim
