Maxitours Shotsaver Masters at Reddish Vale

Well draining Reddish Vale was very much open for business and although a little damp underfoot all players agreed the course and hospitality was excellent.

The Maxitours Summer Series started this May amid fears of drought and water bans, today was the last event of the Summer and most Cheshire courses were closed due to torrential rain and flooding. At Reddish the greens were hand cut and tees were presented in tremendous condition by the Reddish Greens staff, many thanks for all your efforts to help us have a wonderful days golf in the sun.

Frank Havard likes to mark his balls clearly for identification purposes. He carefully marks his first ball in the sleeve with his initials FH1, the second FH2 and so on. It was clear he was having a bad day when a ball with FH8 scrawled on it was found stuck in a tree near the river on the 15th hole.

Before his round likeable Steve Hindley was in two minds whether or not to order a new battery for his electric trolley. ‘It should get me round’ he said optimistically. Five hours later he collapsed in the clubhouse after climbing unpowered up heart attack hill. After a few deep breaths he summoned up enough energy to whisper ‘get me a lithium one’.

The blonde Stewardess, Michelle, is a lovely lady and does a great job at the club. She looked worried however when I asked her if she was having a good day. ‘One of your guys has an outstanding tab but he didn’t give me his name. He jokingly told me put it under ‘big, tall and ugly bloke’ any ideas who it may be? I think he may have gone home!’
Just then Steve Welch walked in with his scorecard and we both new she had her man.

In todays event John Gibson and James Spark from Lymm finished 4th with 42 points. Third place went to Joe Kirwan (who holed his second on the par four 5th hole) as he collected 43 points playing alongside Charlie Rooney.

Simon Helmsley and Alan Demmy from Bramall also scored an excellent 43 points taking second place.

Taking the honours with a tremendous 47 points was the experienced pairing of John Hilton and Ron Jolley. The sparks were flying as retired electrical engineer Jolley played the golf of his life. Ex European table tennis champion John Hilton showed his class and competitive streak with two excellent pars to finish in style. The two sixty-plus year olds were delighted to record their first ever victory in nearly twenty starts, great golf chaps.

Many thanks to Steven and Jason Ballard from Shotsaver for their continued fantastic support of Maxitours events

Maxitours at Terrific Tytherington

The wonderful Tytherington course has perhaps the best layout in Cheshire and this was enjoyed by todays Maxitours players. Many thanks to the green keepers for all their hard work. The greens were in really great condition considering the recent heavy rainfall.

Maxitour regulars Mick Mahon and his team ‘love it’ when the tour stops at Tytherington. At most venues after play the fantastic four occasionally have a pint but normally they disappear quickly to beat the motorway traffic. Today after their golf they ordered four pints, four starters and four main courses then slowly chewed their food in the prime seats overlooking the 20-35 year old ladies aerobics. Richard Palmer nearly needed medical attention after stabbing his cheek with his fork after missing his mouth when the class started to get into full swing.

On the golf course Cath Rawthore and talented car mechanic John Davies engineered a solid 41 points in the soft conditions to finish in fourth place.

The first hole at Tytherington is without doubt the toughest starting hole in Cheshire . Paul Taylor was not intimidated by the 458 yard monster and he executed a magnificent four to give his team a great start. Paul was playing alongside his financial manager Simon Carling and it was clear that he had invested in a good partner as they combined to finish 3rd with 42 points.

Second place went to top Macclesfield hotelier Terry ‘Basil Fawlty’ Davison and property magnate Arthur Jowell who actually owns half of nearby Macclesfield. Prestbury member Davison (9 handicap) played terrific golf on the front nine to go out in level par and Arthur came good at the business end of their round.

Taking the honours today were Tytheringtons Martin Firth(7) and Andy Taylor(13). Taylor recorded three birdies as he tried out his new belly putter. ‘I just couldn’t miss’ said the likeable builder ‘I knocked in two forty footers, a twenty footer and a couple from ten feet’. The Maxitours regulars were delighted to record their first victory of the season and they cruised home with a majestic 47 points to win by five shots- great golf chaps, well played.

Congratulations to Gary Garner for securing the Shotsaver s430 Order of Merit, Gary played some great golf this Summer and was delighted to win the fantastic Shotsaver S430 and a magnificent Claret jug trophy.

Maxitours at Wonderful Worsley

Worsley is one of Manchesters most historic and beautiful golf courses. Today despite recent heavy downpours the weather was fine and the course was presented in excellent condition for the latest Maxitours event.

Scruffy maxitours regular Geoff Cogswell today looked as smart as I have ever seen him. Normally Geoff has the look of a rat peeping out of a hay stack. Today he turned up like a new man after his barber took three inches of hair off his head, two inches off his eyebrows and an inch off his nose and ears.

Full figured Simon Helmsley continues to closely monitor his diet and he was extremely careful not to put too much sugary tomato sauce on his 3rd sausage sandwich.

Dave Henshall has had more last place finishes than any other Maxitours player in history. Today he was delighted to finish second from bottom ‘that was a good performance from me today’ beamed Dave. ‘Especially considering I have got a bad foot, a bad back and I am mentally deranged.’

Al Noden enters the 2’s sweep each week and today he was overjoyed when he recorded the first two of his undistinguished Maxitours career. He is going to be very careful not to lose his pro V1s next week as they cost him £172.50 each.

Todays ‘trunk slammers’ were Mark Richardson and Charles Herbert, 1 handicapper Richardson played the front nine in an incredible SIX under par gross, however an average back nine saw them finish 6th on a card play off with 43 points.

Enigmatic Dave Parsons and charismatic John Stubbs are great friends and the two likeable characters rarely feature in the top ten. It has been suggested that they peak for just 1 week each year (and that’s the week they go on a fishing holiday.) Today they played terrific golf and were delighted to finish 5th on 43 points.

Also on 43 points was the feared pairing of Darren Whittaker and Ian King who are just finding some form before the winter series. Gary Conroy and Billy Ratcliffe were 3rd also on 43 points and Alan Jacobs and Darren Wood were 2nd after a terrific back nine.

Todays winners were John Beech and Jeff Barratt who travel regularly from Leek to play in my events. Despite their strange accents both these young looking seniors played some terrific golf scoring 45 points to record their first wins. You could tell they were both delighted with their performance because in the bar after play these Midlanders kept saying to each other ‘well played me duck’.

Many thanks to all players for your support today.

The Terrific new Maxitours Schedule!

Dear Maxitours Player,

Here is the new Winter Schedule which I think you will agree is my best ever.

Once again I have tried to offer the best golf courses at tremendous prices to ensure high quality and value for money events for my players. Of course there will be no joining fee.

Many thanks for the tremendous Clubhouse and Course etiquette you showed this year which again has seen every venue welcome us back with open arms. There is always a nice friendly atmosphere at the events and I am regularly told by stewards and secretaries what a lovely group we are!

I hope you will enjoy your golf this coming winter and continue to compete in the true spirit of the game which we all know is so important.

There will surely be strong competition to get in the top 10 in the Shotsaver Order of Merit to qualify for the famous 9 hole end of season Shootout at Knutsford, so good luck with those putts.

Thanks for your tremendous support last year which was really appreciated,
Yours in Golf,

Tim
