Classy Caldy results and Delamere times

Maxitours at Classy Caldy

Over one hundred golfers made the worthwhile journey down the M56 to the ‘Land of the Posh Scouser’ (otherwise known as the Wirral). The first twelve holes were played in lovely benign conditions however for the last hour the heavens opened and the magnificent Golf Course showed its true teeth.

The maestro James Braid designed the Caldy course which is half seaside links and half parkland. In recent years the club has spent thousands on protecting the cliff tops and golf course from coastal erosion as the sea continues its march inland. Bob Sutton’s team of Barry Dale, Jonty Geake and Dave Harlow also caused their own little bit of coastal erosion as he and his Knutsford team took plenty of divots on their way down the 6th fairway.

Curly haired Keith Fitzhenry has a look of World number one Rory McIlroy, he is also taking a little while to get used to his new clubs as he and his team finished in a lowly 14th place.

Thirty five years ago with his hair flowing in the wind Terry Davison(7) shot the round of his life when he played Caldy in 75 strokes. Today an older, wiser and almost completely bald Davison repeated that feat in todays tough conditions and this helped his team into 4th place. His shot of the day was on the 17th hole where he nearly holed his tee shot. Geoff Haynes (6), Alan Clough(17) and Arthur Jowell(17) made up the rest of the team.

Macclesfield Golf Club has produced some tremendous golfers in recent years. World number twenty nine Jamie Donaldson won the Irish Open last year and also beat a world class field including Tiger woods and Luke Donald in Abu Dhabi last month. Another Macclesfield youngster Tim Maxwell memorably won the Rhyl Classic in 1998 (by two clear shots). Today Macclesfields Pete Holmes(13) and his talented team of Mark Breirley(9), Bill Ross(16) and Club Steward Steve Hackett(13) were absolutely delighted to finish 3rd with 80 points, especially against such a high quality field.

Des Kelly (16), Glynn Hampton(13),Mike(21) and Pete Hall(3) had a career best 2nd place Maxitours finish as they scored an excellent 81 points. Glynn made birdies on both par 3’s on the front nine as the team went out in a wonderful 44 points.

Despite dropping 2 shots on their final hole, winning todays event with an excellent 83 points was the Tytherington team of Andy Stubbens(6), Andy Bethell(15), Martin Firth(5) and the on form Charles Herbert(16). Ex marine Stubbens picked up three birdies in an impressive run of holes around the turn.

Congratulations to Romiley Golf Clubs Dave Blood who made an excellent 2 on perhaps my favourite hole in Cheshire -the dog leg 3rd hole.

The forecast is good for Thursdays Am Am at the wonderful Caldy Golf Club. There is no rain forecast for the next two days however the secretary has requested:
All players are asked to carry where possible please! however
*for those who need a pull trolley these are permitted with a light carry bag
**Electric trolleys with light bags are allowed for our ‘Older players or those with medical conditions who need them in order to play’

Classy Ringway Results and Caldy start times next Thursday

Another full field enjoyed todays event at Ringway. Despite the recent poor weather the greens were in superb condition and the wind kept the rain at bay.

My good friend PGA Professional Matthew Turnock handed out the cards this morning as I returned from an enjoyable golfing trip to Portugal . As the plane approached the Ringway runway this afternoon I am sure I saw a Srixon ad333 with big hitting Charles Herberts initials on hurtle past my window.

Its funny how rumours start, when I was away somebody came out with a ludicrous remark that Oldham had beaten Liverpool in the cup.

In todays event the tough conditions kept the scoring quite respectable and fourth place went to the talented Denton team of Dave Blood(10), Andy Sandham(6), ‘big’ Joel King(6) and ‘notsobig’ Jim Cox(4) with 78 points.

It is great to see Lewis Marland(12), Alf Shillitoe(18), Nick Ford(9) and Neil Laurent(11) take third place today with 79 points. I have only ever watched Alf play one shot last year and he completely missed the ball. Today he came in on the par three holes to give his team a real boost.

Malc Wells(2) continues his good form as his low handicap team including Bob Vickers (6) and Barney Ross(4) finished second in the wind and rain. The fourth member of the team Alex Pritchard(+1) just arrived in time after turning up at Vale Royal instead of Ringway. They also scored 79 points with a better back nine.

Taking todays honours were Roy Ainsworth(26), Peter Atherton(12), Peter Heald(7) and Joe Yates(14). Despite picking up just 2 shots on their first hole the magnificent four gelled well to record 83 points and they achieved their first maxitours win by an impressive four shot margin.

Ringway times + New Shotsaver OOM + Friday-cancelled due to snow!

Unfortunately due to the large covering of snow and ice on the Vale Royal Course and cold overnight forecasts Fridays event is cancelled. The temperatures are set to rise at the weekend so I am very optimistic that the Ringway event shall take place in the heat on Thursday next week.

Lovely Knutsford results and Fridays Vale Royal start times

Maxitours at the lovely Knutsford Golf Club

The frost and ice did not prevent Maxitours competitors from enjoying themselves on the lovely Knutsford golf course today. With snow forecast tomorrow many husbands were keen to enjoy their last day of freedom before being ‘stranded at home with the wife’. One Maxitour competitor (who shall remain nameless) today referred fondly to his wife as ‘The FPO’ (Fun Prevention Officer).

Big Geoff Cogswell looks like he has enjoyed plenty of Tesco burgers. Stallion Geoff was in the clubhouse ‘Chomping at the bit’ to get on the golf course. On the first hole he had a big ‘horse shoe’ and by the end of his round his team requested ‘don’t Saddle us with him next week’.

As players enter the Knutsford lounge there is a low ceiling and tricky step to negotiate. It is always quite amusing to watch the clumsier members of the tour stumble into the Clubhouse. Today Keith Coxon took the honours with his triple salchow. Charles Herbert(6ft 10’) still holds top marks from last year when he managed to trip over the step and hit his head at the same time.

John Royle today celebrated his 70th birthday. He decided to wear his best pink golf shirt and a lovely pink, white and black diamond sweater to mark the occasion. A large brown sauce stain from his pre round bacon sandwich finished off the outfit nicely.

Old Jack Coleman(13) is a successful accountant from Mere. He is good company and has plenty of one-liners. I’ve no idea what it means but today’s gem was: ‘In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king’. As a respected chartered accountant you would expect him to be blessed with a well disciplined, technically correct, efficient swing. Nothing could be further from the truth. Today he played great golf however and an excellent birdie on the 9th hole helped his team including the talented Gauden brothers and Bill Gillings(13) to a career best 2nd place finish.

Taking todays honours with 81 points was the team of Malcolm Wells(2), Adam Hart(7), Bob Vickers(7) and Phil Sharp(17). Their score of 81 points included four chip-ins! Bob Vickers was their star player hitting his well controlled gentle fade which was incredibly checking up close to the flag on the frozen greens.

Thanks to everyone for playing today, apologies to those I could not fit in. Thanks also to Secretary Stuart Blake and top Greenkeeper Mark Dingle for all their help to allow the event to go ahead. Lets hope we miss the snow tomorrow! Tim.
