Alistair Mackenzie would have been proud of his Reddish Vale masterpiece today.

The greens were immaculate, the fairways looked like Wembley turf, the tees and surrounds were manicured to perfection, even the squirrels gathering their Autumn acorns all looked really healthy and happy to be alive.

Jonny Davies couldn’t take his eyes off the well manicured long legged blond behind the bar ‘this is a really great club’ said the young Chorlton star as a housefly flew into his mouth.

The early competitors made the most of the great scoring conditions, Alsagers ageing duo of John Rigby and Ian Tinling playing in the first match of the day gelled really well and they set the pace with a great score of 42 points.

It was great to see Maxitours favourite Neville Dennis back in the prizes also scoring 42 points with his new best friend Ernie Kirkby.

Next to finish was Jimmy ‘five daughters’ O’Reilly, he was really on form today partnering John Reilly to record 43 points. John O’Reilly hit a great shot to within 2 feet on the 185 yard twelfth for a birdie, however last man to play John Aikenhead nearly holed his approach as he took the nearest the pin prize in dramatic style. Rick Pickard was closest on the 4th hole.

Bramalls Mike Spencer and Cheshire seniors player Joe Kirwan playing in match number three handed their card in and were delighted to be the third pair to take the lead (with 44 points). It soon became clear that this would really take some beating as the wind started to gust and before long an American hurricane swept over the Reddish Links.

The wind was so strong even immaculate Victoria Howarth had a few hairs out of place as she was gracefully blown off the 18th green.

By the end of the day nobody had come close to Kirwan and Spencers score and they were both delighted to secure the second Maxitours victory of their very average playing careers.

Charles Herbert and Moby Rawthore both earned valuable order of merit points in the wind as the Shotsaver Order of Merit nears its conclusion.

For the first time in Maxitours history today a male player turned up to play in bright pink trousers, Ross Birch assures me he is however very happily married. Mechanic John Davies playing in a four ball with Ross for the first time looked confused and wasn’t sure whether to shake brightly dressed Ross by the hand or give him a big kiss when they finished on the 18th green.

The Maxitour Classic AM AM at Hazel Grove

The Autumn heatwave hit Stockport today and nearly 100 Maxitours competitors enjoyed the sunshine as they played the challenging Hazel Grove golf course.

Life long Stoke City fans John Grint and Brian Mottram were delighted to score 85 points and also see their team shock Manchester United at the weekend, ‘Stoke should have won 4-2 easy and we could have had a really, really great score today’. Yes and if my auntie had…

Alf Shillitoe had to find a late stand in after his long term partner Lewis Marland had his car stolen last night. Alf then played his best golf all year ‘I thought for a long time Lewis puts me off when I play with him and now I know he does’.

Reports came in this week about a frustrated Didsbury member who hooked three tee shots in the Mersey on their second hole, he then proceeded to launch his driver over the fence into the river, such was the fury in the throw the club actually reached the far bank. The member then asked a kind passing cyclist if he could throw it back, this time the club didn’t quite reach and splashed into the river before drifting off to sea.

Back in todays event the Bramall team set the early pace with a great 86 points, handicap Secretary Mike Spencer tried hard not to look surprised as his 20 foot putt on the last dropped into the hole to pick up a vital three points.

The high quality team of Rich Pickard, Jonny Davies, Guds Ahmed and Scott Arnold contained three players off plus handicaps, they also scored 86 points after a great display to secure second place.

The honours eventually went to Martin Worthington and Keith Massey from Ormskirk who teamed up with 2 local boys, Hazel Grove Club Champion Frazer Macleod and Luke Elwers. The team picked up 11 shots on the back nine as plus one handicapper Macleod showed his true class.

Many thanks to all players for supporting todays event.

Maxitours Legh Arms Classic at Prestbury Results

There was not a cloud in the sky as millionaire Jimmy O’Reilly drilled his second hand Pro v1 down the beautifully manicured Prestbury fairway to get the fantastic Legh Arms Classic underway today.

Playing partners Carl Kennedy and Joe York set the early pace with a wonderful 44 points. ‘I’ve got this great new warrant card’ said York who has started training to be a policeman, ‘it gets me free public transport and meals in Macdonalds, Subway and Pizza Hut- does it get me any Maxitours discount?’ ‘NO’ replied the organiser.

The Prestbury course described by many as ‘The Augusta of the North’ was in immaculate condition, however last weeks winners Holmes and Breirley found the Azaleas and Creek more than once on their way to a very average 36 points.

Martin Worthington’s fortunes have changed after finding a new Maxitours partner, (the gifted Keith Massey) and he recorded a second successive top 5 finish after rolling in a 12 foot putt for a superb birdie on the last hole for 43 points.

Over Seventy years ago two major events happened, Peter Hargreaves was born and Lancashire won the County Championship . Since then Lancashire never won the championship and Peter never won a Maxitours prize. Today all that changed Lancashire beat Somerset to take the crown and Peter held his nerve scoring a gutsy par on the last hole as he and Brian Atherton won a superb pair of socks with a great back nine.

Jonathon Davies is a scratch golfer who is trying to pursue an acting career, today he did a great impression of a European tour golfer as he rolled in six birdies on his was to 42 points and sixth place playing alongside Rod Stewart lookalike Paul Bradley.

Moby Rawthore continued his rich vein of form as he eagled the first hole on his way to a best of the day outward nine of 25 points playing with Amjad Butt, however a general lack of fitness saw some heavy breathing and tired swings on the undulating back nine, and the two likeable characters lost out on a back nine card play off.

The strong pairings of Scott Arnold and Guds Ahmed, and Dave Garner and Brian Hill were also in the prizes after playing some great golf.

Many thanks to Pete Myers owner of The Legh Arms for his very kind sponsorship today.
