Warrington on!

Dear Maxitours player,

Just spoke to Ben in the pro shop. They have 3/4 temp greens today but he is optimistic this could be just 1 tomorrow. 🤞 There will be a maximum of 4.

Their will be overnight frost but the event is definitely going ahead.

The sun should be shining.

Remember to please support the host club caterer – Warrington is a lovely club.

Yours in golf

Tim

Maxitours at windy but wonderful Crosland Heath

Maxitours at windy but wonderful Crosland Heath

Wow! A very, very, windy day greeted Maxitours players at Crosland Heath today.

The sandstone based course was in great condition and all players came off with mud free shoes and trousers. They also came off the course with ruddy faces and interesting hair styles as the gale force winds took their toll. Steve Austin is almost completely bald and even his remaining few strands looked windswept.

The greens and fairways are the driest for miles around.

Early in the day there were some rain showers despite my weather app saying there would be no rain. A local member told me that very often the apps get it wrong because it isn’t really raining it is just some ‘low cloud passing through’. So if any players were wondering: we had no rain today -just a bit of cloud. I’m going to use that one in future.

This part of Yorkshire is very friendly and all the staff were lovely. I had a few chats with the members and they were great.

When I arrived I asked for a registration table and the caterer asked me if I wanted Torst. I had no idea what he was talking about and just smiled. Ten minutes later he brought me some toast.

Gary Owens team crashed and burned on the long 5th hole as it was playing nearly 450 yards into the wind. They were not the only casualties on that hole as a few years ago a plane crash landed after a dodgy take off from Huddersfield airport which runs parallel to the hole. Luckily there were no casualties unlike Owens team who only scored 1 point and they all went home in an ambulance.

Scoring was always going to be tough in the gale force breeze.

Only three teams scored higher than par – reflecting the terrific integrity of Maxitours players. I am so lucky to have such great players each week. Thank you.

‘It was a day to remember’ Declared positive Simon Raine.

Steve Heywood likes tomato sauce on his chips. His new name is Heinz after his team could only manage a variety of 57 points today.

Birmingham born likeable West Bromwich Albion fan Chris Adams is talking a bit posher after his year as Prestbury golf club Captain- he is also playing a bit better and he led his team into 3rd place with just 73 points. Mark Pretty, Pete Atherton and Richard Johnson were his team mates.

North Manchesters Ray Massey, John Gleave, Stuart Hibbert and James Imeson bravely battled the wind and took 2nd with 74 points.

Winning today were the Wychwood Park team of Martin Wainman, Pete Keena, Ray Cornwall and Dan Boyles with 76 points. They started on the 7th and struggled before picking up 5 shots in their closing 4 holes after a game changing seven point haul on the 4th.
Great golf, well played team!

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance.

Excellent.

DON’T MISS OUT!!
*Now Room for 1 team on the fabulous January trip and 2 teams on the February trip- ENJOY yourself this Winter life is too short!!

*Spaces for two teams at Alaster Mackenzies Crosland Heath next Thursday -Don’t miss this cracker!

Maxitours at marvelous Mottram Hall

Very pleasant, calm Autumnal conditions were the reward for Maxitours players at beautiful Mottram Hall today. The greens are excellent and there was never a doubt that we were going ahead thanks to the excellent new greenkeeper and his team who do a great job keeping the course open for their members- terrific.

There was plenty of praise from everybody.
‘Brilliant – the greens were class’ Declared big Dave Mason.
‘I can’t believe how dry it is- amazing!’ Announced Jim Cox.

As well as an incredibly dry course the service in the golf centre was the best I have known for many years. Luis the new catering manager is getting things running very smoothly indeed. Thanks so much Luis.

Well-spoken Prestbury member Martin Prescott plays paddle tennis most mornings and he was at it again today as he arrived for golf wearing his tennis shorts and socks. He looks like a poor man’s Novak Djokovic. An unnamed Maxitours player from the deepest North saw him in his attire, looked him up and down and invited him back to his home Club in Lancashire. ‘Come to our wet course- you can play paddle golf there’.

There is no longest drive in Maxitours events but I watched overswinging Tom Garside thin his approach into the 9th green. He won ‘longest pitch mark’ as his ball skidded across the putting surface on its way towards the half way house. Well done Tom.

Scoring was tight once again with Denton mechanic and lovely single figure player Jim Cox leading his team into 3rd place with 86 points. Mike Grainger, Steve Rigby and Ian George were his team mates.

Second place went to talented Sam Garnett (1) who has found his form again after a poor few months. Davyhulmes Kev Hart(10) , Dave Blease(4) and Paul Brodie(20) completed the team.

Winning their first ever Maxitours event after over two years of fruitless trying were Richard Margrave(8), Paul Traynor(7), Steve Moores(5) and Martin Dwyer (5). The likeable Saddleworth quartet had a quiet start but picked up in the middle of their round with 7 point hauls on the 10th and 12th to really get things moving. WQell played chaps. Graet golf.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance.
