Portugal February 1-5th filling fast – another 2 teams sold today!

*Life is too short to get damp and miserable in January*

Maxitours at sunny Davyhulme.

Davyhulme hosted todays event and the hospitality shown to our players was superb.

The course had dried out really well and the greens were excellent.

Considering the rain yesterday that was incredible. That’s a proper golf course!’ Praised Prestbury’s Steve Schofield.

‘Really enjoyed playing that course.’ Declared Mike Hill.

‘That’s a brilliant course but it wasn’t easy.’ Announced Cheshire golfing legend Gareth Bradley.

‘Magnificent course. The fairways were the best I’ve played all year.’ Announced wealthy Dave Rhodes.

Club pro Martyn Hamer is one of the best in the business and couldn’t do enough for my guys today. Thanks. Martyn.

I wouldn’t listen to Tony Leigh if he was talking about golf but the well-travelled Heyrose man informed me that it was :

‘The best coffee I have ever had in a golf club’.

Thank you to all the excellent Davyhulme catering staff.

I am currently reading a book about the Charlton brothers and Davyhulme Golf Club is mentioned a few times as Matt Busby played the course regularly with his pals and The Busby babes would always meet at the club on Saturday lunchtimes for their pre match meal during the 1950’s.

It is a tremendously impressive Clubhouse to be fair. The staircase is a classic. Although not as impressive as Chris Perrys house- he told me he has three cleaners at a time. He is either very untidy or has a big house or both.

There is never a dull moment with Pete Short. He is a member at Davyhulme and as he went outside to play he went around the famous revolving door twice. I asked him why.

‘It’ means you’ll get good luck’.

It either means you will get good luck or it means you are a bit crackers. I know which one I’m going with.

Scoring was excellent as the wind dropped and the greens were receiving a well struck shot.

Fourth today was nice guy Andy Parrington and his Withington team who scored 89 to win the card play off against retired United FC manager Karl Marginson and his home Davyhulme team.

Big Martin Wainman(11) and his Wychwood team of Greg Meganheimer(14), Dan Boyles (4) and Josh McClaren(9) took fifth place with an excellent 90 points. This was leading until Lymms’ David Hughes , Steve Lamont, George Harwood and Steve Rawlinson shocked the golfing world with 92 points for a first ever victory. Incredible but very popular winners.

The two day event was closely fought but it was retired Copper Neale Laurent and his Duckenfield men who added a solid 87 to their overnight score of 88 points. This was good enough to take 2nd place.

The cuddly white shark aka Geoff Bickerton showed his teeth today as the likeable Bolton quartet added an excellent 91 to their 88 yesterday for a tremendous win. The low handicap team picked up 9 birdies in a classy display. Well played everyone. A great two days of golf!

Room for teams of 4 at Davyhulme tomorrow!

Forecast excellent!

Maxitours at stately Vale Royal

Thanks to all players for playing today. We were rewarded with a terrific day on the course with only a short shower in the middle of the morning. This golf course can take torrential rain so the fairways and greens were all firm and playing really, really well. I always look forward to playing at this tremendous venue and it is a firm favorite with my players.

The course was superb as was the catering, the menu is now first class and I can highly recommend the Club Sandwich at just £7.50 including the best chips I’ve tasted for a while.

I’m not sure where Rob Blain has been playing his golf. After driving through torrential rain to the course he was delighted to see the blue skies over Northwich.

‘We can’t complain if it starts to rain again though, we’ve had a very good summer this year.’

I nearly fell off my chair.

Today was the first day of the 2-day Cheshire classic. We are at Davyhulme tomorrow. The event is almost certainly going ahead- but please check my website which will be updated before 8am before you set off tomorrow.

It is always good to see Kevin Harling playing. He is one of the good guys and I used to coach him every Saturday morning when I worked at Mottram Hall. Despite this he has a tidy golf game and swears by his new 8 wood:

‘I can make it talk. Tiger Woods and most of the players on the PGA tour have one as well.’ I think they keep them in the garage Kev.

There are only three short holes at Vale Royal. Ten players recorded twos and incredibly they were ALL on the 6th hole except Geoff Bickerton who knocked it to 8 foot to win nearest the pin and pick up some balls for a two on the 16th.

Scoring was tight and improved slightly later in the day as the sun dried the fairways. Tony Hopes Ashton on Mersey team took 4th with 87 points. Neale Laurents team lies in 3rd with 88 points alongside Gary Neiles and his team who had a strong back nine to take 2nd. It is big Goeff[T1] Bickerton and his Blackburn team who lead the way. If you really squint your eyes blond haired Bickerton has a look of Greg Norman and today he had his golf game. Can the great white shark hold on tomorrow?

Prizes will be published after the 2 day event finishes as teams are playing tomorrow and are only allowed 1 prize.

Thanks for everyone travelling today despite the poor forecast. Brilliant. Everyone really enjoyed their golf.

Tim.

News

Dear Maxitours player

The Vale Royal course is open and ready for play.

The rain is due to stop at 11am which is great. There is a diversion on the bypass which is adding some time on the journey – once you start the diversion take a left after about 1 mile (signposted m6 birmingham) this speeds up your journey time considerably

Thanks
Tim
