Maxitours at wonderful Wychwood park

An almost rain free day greeted Maxitours competitors at Wychwood Park today. Whilst many local courses have temporary greens or closures the Wychwood Park greens remained firm, true and well and truly open. They were a pleasure to putt on. Great work from Head green keeper Ashley and his team.

Thanks to everyone for sticking to roped off areas Ashley was very grateful.

Steph and Lee in the Clubhouse and Ben and Rob he two assistant pros in the shop were also excellent to work with -thank you guys.

The Wychwood course isn’t easy. I played in a pro am here when it was newly opened twenty years ago and one of my amateurs splashed out and bought himself a Pinnacle 15 ball pack before he went out to play. He bought another pack after nine holes after losing his 15th ball of the day on the 8th .
The course rating of 151 off the back tees makes it rank as the 3rd hardest in the country. Luckily, we played off the yellow tees today which made the course more enjoyable for all but it was still an excellent test of golf.

Jonathon Cricklemore hits his nine iron about 120 yards. Before play he told me that he had just had a lesson and that if he just makes a special move with his hips he now hits it 159 yards. His team finished 22nd today and Jon drove home with a dislocated pelvis.

Todays scoring was understandably tough with only five teams scoring over 80 points.

Roger Percivals team were pipped on the back six card play off. Team mate Pete Atherton loves his food and has been known to have one or perhaps even two bacon butties before play. When he told me he was having problems with his takeaway this morning I thought his favorite local Chinese must have increased their prices, but after a while I realized he was talking about his disconnected backswing. Something clicked today though and he contributed well to take 3rd.

Peter Griggs, Jim Caldwell, John Roome and Lee Charnley took 2nd place. Big hitting Charnley from Prestbury was on fire.

Winning was Phil Dickens(12), Mike Evans(5), Neil Evans(8) and Paul Robinson(9) with a terrific 85 points. The likeable regulars play each week without any success but today they pulled a very big rabbit out of a very small hat to take the first event of the Clarion Winter series. Well played chaps.

Crosland Heath cancelled

*The 2nd Algarvian Classic on 1st -5th February has expanded and I have room for two teams. Get away from damp Manchester this Winter.

Dear Maxitours player,

There is a storm forecast for Thursday. Very heavy rain and strong winds are moving in on Wednesday As there is a distance for my players to travel to Crosland we have decided to cancel. General Manager Toby has been great to deal with. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Ringway has two holes closed so the event on 23rd November will now move from Ringway to Crosland Heath. Tee times from the Ringway event will be moved to Crosland- please let me know if you cannot play.

Thanks Tim

*Maxitours Algarvian Classic 1 and 2 Full!!

I have managed to get another 2 team places for 1-5th Feb so all is not lost ! – Let me know if you are keen. I have a really nice pair (Paul Evans 20 h’cap and friend)requiring 2 players- so either a team of 4, two singles or a pair are required!

Maxitours at fabulous Formby Hall.

Formby Hall was incredibly dry for todays Maxitours event. Players couldn’t believe how playable the course was after recent rainfall and were desperate to return to this cracking Southport venue.

‘That was incredibly dry- I loved it!’ Reported golf mad Martin Humphries.

‘The greens were terrific!’ Declared Gary Neiles.

‘For me that’s the best venue of the year.’ Announced an impressed Harvey Mattinson.

Steve Mattinson wasn’t playing today but came along to give support and advice to his brother Harvey and his team in the hope that it would improve their average performances. After 7 holes he walked in, had a nice lunch, drank a beer and found a nice corner to forget about the golf and had a nice snooze. The team actually came home with a solid back nine and a better than usual mid table finish.

Jim Rymer gets a mention as he finished his round with the same ball he started with. Probably a first for the likeable retired lawyer. Mrs Maxwell played today and she was happily getting through my stock of taylor made balls on the ‘watery’ back nine. In order to avoid an argument I ‘must’ mention that she had a number of great holes as well.

Taking the early lead was Andy Taylor and his team with 85 points which was matched by Paul Fells team who had a very strong front nine but then they all came home in an ambulance.

Stamfords Richard Margrave, Paul Traynor, Mike Grainger and Steve Moores played great for seventeen holes but could only manage 2 points on the closing downwind par 5! They were inconsolable after their 86 points just missed out.

Taking the honours were regulars Jim Clarke, Graham Jackson, Pete Ledger and Dave Tobutt with 87 points. They had a terrific 47 points on the front nine as Graham ‘the pie’ Jackson had the round of his life. The tougher back nine saw them come home in 40 to narrowly win. Well played chaps.

Thanks to all players for your brilliant support,

Tim
