Maxitours at Ringway – 19th May 2022
An overcast beginning to the day soon improved to become a bright and sunny afternoon at the superb Ringway Golf Club.
As always PGA Professional James Salt was very accommodating along with the catering and bar staff with their efficient and friendly service and excellent choice of food throughout the day.

Scoring conditions were favourable with only a gentle breeze and many teams took advantage with eventual winners Dave Buckly, Mike Earsley, Pete Stuart and Dave Carter coming in with a superb 89 points helped by no mean feat of Dave Carter’s run of 4 gross birdies on the spin from the 7th to the 10th giving Rory McIllroy a run for his money there Dave !!

A creditable 2nd was the team of Steve Aspinall, Peter Abbott, John Fitzsimmons and Harry Wellings with 87 points.

Jeremy Waterhouse’s great grandfather was a past member of Ringway and a proud picture of his grandfather playing with Bobby Locke Open Champion hangs in the clubhouse. His grandfather was a scratch golfer for many years and although Jeremy hasn’t made it quite to that level yet he happy to have scored an excellent 2 on the par 3 8th.

A big thank you to my good friend Matt Turnock for running the day as efficiently as ever.

Maxitours at brilliant blustery Bolton Old Links

Maxitours at brilliant but blustery Bolton

The Bolton Old Links Golf Club was so highly regarded it regularly hosted The European Tour school in the late 1980s. The Club is once again flourishing and this terrific venue is back to its very best.
The greens are really superb and in today’s wind any putting mental weaknesses were exposed -they were tough!

England senior international and 3 times English senior Champion Alan Squires likes tricky putting conditions and he rolled his fair share in reporting that ‘The greens were like billiard tables!’
Tom Roe is 3 time Knutsford roll up winner and he also enjoyed the course ‘I had a great birdie on the 12th and then an eagle on the 13th ,‘ can I talk you through them?’ No.

Clubhouse manager Liz ticks every box when it comes to hospitality and all the staff were warm and friendly throughout the day- thank you.

As some lighter Maxitours players were buffeted by the wind big Antrobus steward Dave Buckley(14) was standing firm and he led his Antrobus men into an early lead with an excellent 83 points. Paul Bayley(5), Ricky Howard(15) and Jim Spears(11) were the other superstars in his team.

This score was challenged by Davyhulme’s Karl Marginson(6), Rhodri Giggs(5), John Worsnop(8) and Jim Murray (8)who scored 82. This was matched late in the day by Ringway architect David Smith(9), Bill Parkinson(16), Mark Birtwistle(11) and Barry Rigby(15). It was great to see gentleman Bill enjoying his golf with good friends.

Buckleys men hung on as 83 points was good enough for a well earned victory – congratulations.

Thanks to all players, I hope you had a terrific day.

Tim.

Maxitours at beautiful Bramall

Bramall Park Golf Club was in really terrific condition for today’s Maxitours event . Lots of Cheshire golf courses are struggling for growth after a cold spring but this course is well ahead of the game. Thanks to the head greenkeeper and his talented team. The greens were astounding.

Bramall Park is another course to benefit from the influence of architects James Braid and Dr MacKenzie and it continues to get better year by year. The fairway lining trees are maturing nicely and the greens continue to excel.

The catering was excellent and the menu was modern and refreshing. I enjoyed eating the ‘perfect to share’ calbrese pizza. Unfortunately I was all on my own so I ordered some extra chips to make myself feel better.

I had a lovely afternoon in the company of four softly spoken Bramall Park ladies who were having a great time playing bridge next to my check in desk. I can’t wait until I am seventy. Things went into a frenzy when the fire alarm went off in the middle of a tense final game.

In another brilliantly competitive event played in typical Maxitours spirit and integrity scoring was close and very respectable.

Ian Reece and his team were inconsolable after ‘blowing up’ on the closing holes. They finished tied 2nd but had a best of the day 46 points on the front nine before hitting the wall. Tony Andrews and his team tried to cheer them up.
‘We would love to blow up! A little bit of smoke would be a bonus for our team.’ They finished 24th today.

Dave Rhodes brought a secret weapon this week in the form of Andrew Vickers. He plays off a 32 handicap and looked quietly dangerous when he checked in. The team could only manage 76 points.
‘How was your secret weapon?’ I enquired.
‘ He was very secret indeed today.’ Replied Rhodes.

Colin Roberts team took the early lead. They had dour but very likeable Scotsman Don Campbell join them late in the day as they were short.
‘Is he any good?’ asked Colin
‘Yes.’ I replied.
Don started his round with a solid par then eagled the par 4 second as Colin(23), Nigel Armitage(13) and Alan Turner(14) were delighted to finish in 2nd . They have now got his number…

Steve Marsh(4) and his Shrigley Hall team of Darren Whittaker(12) Martin Keates(1) and Johnny Eccles(16) also had 83 points and they took 3rd on the card play off. They also struggled on the closing two holes -dropping three vital shots on the 17th and 18th..

Hazel Grove and ex Cheshire legend Andrew Hill(2) has failed to impress in recent Maxitours events but he recorded his first win for nearly five years as the team scored 85 points. Hill showed his class with a birdie on the tough 16th when his team were starting to take the gas. Brothers Mike(14) and Dave Stewardson(9) and Adrian Waring(15) completed the successful team. Well played chaps.

Maxitours at superb Preston

Spaces next week at Bramall Park 10th May and Bolton Old 12th May,
Both courses terrific !

This year the Captains of Manchester golf club and Maxitours regulars Janet & Steve Heywood, are having their charity day on Friday 3rd June 2022, one of the extra bank holidays for the Queens platinum jubilee. It’s aimed at members; but Maxitours players are welcome.

It’s a fun 4 person team event. Any combination of men, ladies and juniors with appropriate world handicap index. The cost is £20 for a member and £35 for a visitor. This price includes food (hopefully a bbq if weather allows). Booking is live now via the visitor page on the website

https://visitors.brsgolf.com/manchester#/open-competitions

Our charity is local, it’s Springhill Hospice in Rochdale. On the day we hope to have prizes for nearest the pin etc. If anyone wants to donate prizes, please contact the captains direct.

The captains are looking forward to seeing you all on the day.

Maxitours at lovely Preston

Maxitours players really enjoyed visiting Preston in deepest Lancashire today.
The course is a cracker due to the fact that they enlisted the top players in the 1900’s to help them with the design. They recruited Harry Vardon famous for his grip, James Braid, the 5 times winner of the Open between 1901 & 1910 and prolific golf course designer; Alistair Mackenzie, best known for his terraced greens; and Sandy Herd who beat Vardon & Braid to win the 1902 Open. Much of what these legends of the game suggested for the course, is still in place today.

The closing 5 holes are class and the fantastic 17th is almost a mirror image of the famous par five 13th at Augusta.
I played here as an assistant in the early 1990s in a young professional’s event – there was no laying up when you are a fearless 20 year old pro. I’ve never seen so many of my titliest balls splashing in one stream. Great hole though!

Mick Mahon is a top man and always positive. I asked him if he enjoyed his round:
‘I’ve got a bad back, severe gout, toothache and my battery has packed up but apart from that I had a great day.’ Love it.

The check in at Preston is in the driving range reception area. For those who don’t know the driving range is a place you can practice and improve your golf game. Steve Aspinall almost shocked himself and nearly bought some range balls before changing his mind. ‘ I’ve just decided I don’t need to practice to play this badly – it comes naturally.’

All the leading 8 scores were recorded this morning in near perfect golfing weather.
Even Dave Goodwin(8) played well as his team of Richard Williamson(8), Phil Robinson(8) and Sarah Ormrod(12) teamed up superbly to score 82.
Second place went to a Maxitours legend -Birchwood’s non practicing Steve Aspinall(11) alongside Colin Berry(10), Keith Berry(12) and Ken Booth(13) with 85 points.

Big Dave Buckley (16) is the lovable steward at Antrobus- an incredibly friendly Club near Warrington. Dave is another player who is not a huge driving range fan. He normally warms up with a full English and a couple of pints of San Miguel. The likeable giant was on form today. They were out early in the day and made use of the excellent conditions and helped his team to a wonderful 90 points to win by five shots. Dave Carter(5), Rick Howard(16) and Ian Bruce(5) completed the quartet.
Well played chaps, great scoring.

Thanks to everyone for your support today. Class.
