Results from beautiful Bramall Park

Maxitours returned to Bramall Park after a four year break and all of the players thoroughly enjoyed playing this really excellent Manchester venue.

Brian Greenbank was one of many players who hadn’t visited the course before
‘I really enjoyed that, what a great course, I will definitely play here again next year!’ Said the Hale man.
‘What a great track’ reported Archie Tahir.

Many thanks to all the staff at this great club who looked after us so well throughout the day- brilliant.

Terry Rathbone from Burslem is a lovely bloke and a competitive 10 handicapper. He plays off scratch when it comes to talking. I teamed him up today with a couple of perfect playing partners- John Waggett who turned off his hearing aid for the back nine and well spoken Dr Dave Arthur who was educated at Repton and couldn’t understand a word Terry was saying.

Thrifty moorland farmer Richard Palmer is back playing golf after a busy Spring spent delivering lambs. He has his own sheep dog and his dad (Richard’s dad -not the dogs dad) regularly appeared on BBC 2’s One man and his dog.

He told me they now have 1000 new lambs selling at £60 quid a lamb. I’ve not worked out how much money that is but I will be dropping a few hints about how old his golf clubs are looking. Today he was frantically whistling at his ball as it disappeared into the trees on the 6th.

Paul Clay always feeds me with a couple of funny one liners when he plays in my events, he overheard the chat about Richard’s sheepdog and told me he had just bought a very intelligent Colly from an iron monger in Buxton last week. He’d only had it for a day and it had already made a bolt for the door.

In today’s event Knutsford nice guy Dave Bentley had a terrific back nine and was delighted to score 43 points alongside Mere legend Paul Cooper. I asked him what size shoe he was ‘Oh right, that’s great, I’m size nine, have we won some shoes?’ said delighted Dave.
‘No’ I replied ‘you might get a pair of socks’.

There were four pairs who played top golf to score 44 points, Myton Folds Mick Mahon(23) and Richard Palmer(10), Frank Hindle(13) and Dave Westwood(23) also from Myton, Wilmslows Jim Caldwell(10) and Andrew Aherne(18) but winning the card play off with a solid back nine to take 3rd spot was Wychwood’s Dave Goodwin(10) and Richard Williamson(11).

Ian Ainsworth(13) and Bernard McDonald(15) were 5000-1 to win today. They were surprisingly top of the table for most of the day after a magnificent 45 points but unlike Leicester City the Hazel Grove heroes were pipped at the post. Ainsworth hasn’t had too much success in recent years however he played some magnificent golf at Bramall Park and at one point he was not only leading the event but also winning both Nearest the pins!

The likeable duo -Heswall solicitor Jim Rymer(18) and security specialist John Dickenson(20)- recorded a very impressive 46 points to take their second victory of the season. Jim played great on the front nine and Dickenson showed his fighting spirit as he parred 3 of the last 5 holes to ensure the win.- well played chaps!

Maxitours at Vale Royal

Summertime finally arrived at Vale Royal Golf Club! Glorious sunshine, not a breath of wind and temperatures in the 70’s meant a great day was had by all.

Head green keeper Jonathon Betts does a world class job and has turned Vale Royal into one of the top courses in the North West. The hand mown greens were running at eleven on the stimp meter and this caused a few problems for the less talented golfers in the field.

General manager Ian Embury is a good man and excellent to work with, his team run a very smooth operation. – Many thanks to all his staff.

It was great to see Sam Leach back in full swing. He had a dodgy curry the night before last week’s Maxitours event at Llangollen and had to retire after 6 holes from food poisoning. ‘I must have been more poorly than I thought ‘ he reported’ ‘I felt so bad I didn’t have a pint for nearly two days.’

Unfortunately today’s sunshine brought out the golfing shorts. Ian Buxton is an award winning baker from Darwin but his legs looked like a pair of undercooked sausage rolls. Chester’s Mark Howson is a keen ornithologist and his sparrow like knee caps were also a cause for concern.

As expected due to the perfect conditions and yellow tees scoring was excellent. ‘Do we get any extra courtesy shots as we were playing best 2 scores from just 3 players?’ enquired Mere’s Dave Madely.
‘Did one of your team not arrive?’ I asked.
‘ No, Mark Wheeler was hopeless’ .

Phil Smeathers’ (6)Knutsford team played some great golf to finish in 5th place, Joe Stanley(5) recorded five birdies, Dave Stanhope(10) came in twelve times and even Dave Antrobus(10) played well. Brendan Leighton’s(16) Macclesfield team also scored 84 points and a strong finish saw them take 4th place.

Sandiway’s Gary Neiles (5) Jim Doran(15) John Longworth(14) and Joe Yates came in late in the day to scrape into 3rd place with 85 points- well played.

Colin Roberts(18) Alsager team is getting better with age. After eight very barren years the team of seventy -something -year -olds have eventually hit some form . Softly spoken Dave Marchant(15) had a career round and he birdied the first and ninth to pick up eight very useful points. Geoff Andrews(21) and Tony Adams(20) also contributed well as the team finished in second.

After over 50 events Brookdale’s Gareth Winston(10) and Gareth Kershaw(13) had their first ever Maxitours victory at Vale Royal in March this year. It was a case of horses for courses as once again playing alongside Alf Shillitoe(19) and Josh Ainscough(3) the likeable lads were delighted to record another win -well played chaps!
Thanks to all players for your terrific support. I hope you have a great summer of golf, Tim.

Maxitours at Sun soaked Llangollen
A fresh Spring day greeted Maxitours players in the stunning Llangollen valley.
As heavy snow hit Manchester this beautiful sheltered Welsh valley was the only place to be. The sun was out for most of the day with just an hour of attractive sleet which pleasantly cooled down the players and turned their picture postcard golf course into a Christmas card golf course. The fine weather soon returned as everyone had a great day.

The terrific greens, superb layout and amazing views make Llangollen the best inland course in North Wales. The food at Llangollen is also superb with the crispiest bacon on the Maxitours rota. Phil the steward is a great man and serves his customers with a smile- many thanks to everyone at the Club.

The last hole at Llangollen is a terrific 170 yard uphill par three. Pete Atherton was the only non single figure player in his group and yet he was the only one to hit the green. ‘I always thought you were the worst player in your team, Pete?’ I couldn’t resist calling down from my clubhouse perch to the delighted Lymm man who had a big smile on his face. Partner Roger Percival then chipped in and Ed Wilkinson hit a quality bunker shot to three feet. Pete managed to four putt and his big smile slowly disappeared.

Steph Hamilton has been called many things in his life but he has never been described as a ‘stylish’ golfer. He sliced his drive on the 12th hole and then once again lost it right with an ugly over the top second which was heading towards a Friesian cow. His ball then struck a stile and rebounded back onto the middle of the fairway. After a thinned approach Steph didn’t apologise as he two putted for a bogey. ‘That was a very ‘stylish’ five!’ remarked quick witted playing partner Chris Perrin.
Trevor Webbs’ team was delayed on the journey to Wales as there was an unfortunate car crash on the Wrexham by pass involving a hearse and a funeral party. Trevor’s team came home in an ambulance as they could only muster 61 points.

Kevin Sharratt hit his approach to 8 inches on the nearest thin pin 14th hole. He then missed the putt. When I asked him how he missed it all he could reply was ‘I don’t know’. Cliff Dews hit his approach to less than two feet at the last to also win nearest the pin. He also missed his putt but was so choked up he was unable to provide an when I asked what happened.

Taking third prize was Prestbury Golf Clubs Chris Adams(13) and Steve Hall(18) who were paired up with Joe Donnelly(5)and Martin Farnworth(12) from Harwood. They combined well to score 76 points which was good in the breezy conditions.

Roy Ainsworths(26)veteran team were delighted and surprised to take 2nd place with 81 points, they were unfortunate not to win but narrowly lost out on the back nine. Team members Brian Ankers(15), Peter Heald(10 from Lymm) and Mike Verdon(15) from Warrington made up the rest of the team.

Heswall lawyer Jim Rymer(18) was guilty of some great golf playing alongside respected Formby Hall Captain Dave McDougall(11), John Dickenson(22) and Paul Lord(5). Retired Jim is loaded and his game has really improved since he had an artificial chipping and putting green erected in his back garden. Great golf chaps well played.

Thanks to everyone for your support today and for making the journey despite the dismal weather forecast. I am delighted you were rewarded with some sunshine. Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at Sun-cracked Conwy

Another glorious Spring day greeted over 100 Englishmen who travelled to Wales this morning.
Dave Harlow has occasionally been heard to say that I exaggerate the positives with my Maxitours weather reports but in the bar afterwards he looked out of the window and confirmed that ‘there was not a cloud in the sky -stunning’.

The Welsh Ladies Open Strokeplay takes place next week so the green keepers had got the golf course into terrific shape after the long winter- many thanks. The yellow gorse was in full bloom and the mountains looked majestic as a great day was had by all. There was a debate whether the lovely yellow bushes were gorse or broom. ‘Gorse has thorns and broom doesn’t and that was definitely gorse!’ said a pin pricked Tim Spencer.

It was great to see the familiar figure of businessman Dave Antrobus playing again on Maxitours. He is back on his diet and looks good since he replaced his mid round Mars bars with a large packet of maltesers.

I hear some great conversations when I am running my events. Milkman Don Milligan relaxed in the Conwy Clubhouse eating a ham and tomato sandwich. He told Dave Griffiths it was the best ham and tomato sandwich he had ever had and strongly recommended that he should order one.
‘I don’t like tomatoes ‘replied Dave.
‘Just have a ham one then’ suggested Don
‘Oh yeah, good idea’ said Dave

Ten minutes later a ham and tomato sandwich arrived.
‘I thought you didn’t like tomatoes?’ questioned Don
‘oh heck, I forgot to tell her not to put them on’ answered a distraught Dave.

Before his round singer Ken Stephens told thought he had got his life sorted. ‘My missus is jet washing the patio this afternoon whilst I’m playing golf!’ he chuckled. Unfortunately his wife had the last laugh as Ken spent all afternoon ‘spraying’ his golf balls into the Conwy rough.

In today’s event Archie Tahir(5) and good friend Fizz(9) had a good day on the course to collect 44 points and 4th spot.
Nefyn Golf Club member Ian Acton(13) is a waste incinerator by trade. Today it was the Conwy golf course back nine he was burning up on his way to 44 points and 3rd place alongside Kevin Sharratt(12).

.Maxitours regulars John Hilditch(11) and Iain Bartholomew(4) have gradually improved this winter and their recent good form continued with an impressive 46 points for second place.

Four years ago on a sunny day at Conwy Dave Marchant(15) won his one and only Maxitours pairs event. History repeated itself today as the Alsager senior teamed up with good pal Geoff Andrews(23) to score 46 points and win the card play-off. A courageous ‘Danny Willett’ style par at the last for three points completed a successful day on the links for the weel liked chirpy duo. Very well played!
