Maxitours Spring Classic at Sandiway

Several Maxitours players travelled South from Accrington this morning which was under three inches of snow. ‘By eck It was cold in our outdoor toilet’ said Burnley fan Peter Cross but he was delighted to arrive in Cheshire and see the idyllic green golf course bathed in glorious sunshine.

Sandiway Golf Manager Anthony Roberts runs a tight ship and all his staff are really friendly and professional. Thank you very much for your hospitality- everything today was really first class.

Spring had arrived in this quiet picturesque corner of Cheshire. The birds are singing loudly, the hawthorne hedgerows are turning green, the trees are starting to blossom and Pete Short was searching for his ball in the daffodils.

Barry Pendlebury from Bury is a tongue twister and a half but he let his clubs do the talking with an excellent front nine on the course today.

There are a number of high achieving pairs of brothers in the sporting world. Jamie Murray is now ranked number 1 doubles player in the world whilst his brother Andy is number 3 in the world rankings. The talented Molinari brothers both appeared in the same Ryder Cup team and the Charlton brothers won the world cup in 1966. The Hanson brothers, Phil and Dave unfortunately have very little talent and they could only manage a hopeless 76 points today.

Dave Beavis hit the shot of his life as his ball rolled to within less than a foot of the pin on the par three 18th. ‘That was the best shot of my career, I ‘ll be absolutely gutted if that doesn’t win ‘ After treating himself to a frothy bitter and a packet of his favourite dry roasted nuts he sat next to the clubhouse window only to choke on his pint as Iain Bartholomew in the very next fourball trickled his ball down to within 6 inches. ‘Bloody Hell’ was all gracious Dave could mutter.

The scoring was excellent in the breezy conditions. This was mainly due to the smooth putting surfaces prepared by top Head green keeper Brian. At the start of the day he apologised for not ironing the greens due to the heavy overnight rain but there were only glowing reports from my players as they completed their rounds on this superbly manicured course. ‘Amazing!’ was how Dave Marchant described this masterpiece.

Fourth place went to the Trentham team of Gav Dixon(4), Paul Hodges(11), Dave Peake(11) and Mike Taylor(9) with 85 points. Stuart ‘Pancho’ Pearson(5), Ian Bardsley(3), Frank Stapleton(12) and the new slim-line Dave Wilson(6) also had 85 points but a slightly better back nine earned them a 3rd place finish.

Mike Spencer(12) is the handicap Secretary at Bramall golf Club and he is a great bloke who really loves his golf. After a quiet winter he has come out of hibernation and is starting to play some sparkling golf and helped his team finish in a season best second place. Ian King(8) and Jack Hankinson(12) are also warming up very nicely for the Summer.
Fourth team member Darren Whittaker(13) can sometimes be negative and he is famous for saying that he ‘never plays well on Thursdays’. Today was Tuesday -so had things improved? ‘No, I was terrible.’

Roy Ainsworth(26) doesn’t look a day over seventy. He celebrated his 65th birthday today and after a poor front nine he gave his team a ‘good talking to’. They then played the tougher back nine in a superb 49 points. Brian Ankers(15), Peter Heald(10) and Mike Verdon(15) completed the senior quartet from Lymm. Well played chaps great score.

Joe Yates (77 points team score) is a pal of Roy’s but he says there is not a cat in hells chance of Roy winning. ‘He’s a year older tomorrow and he’s also out tonight on the razzle so you can write him off.’

There are prizes for the top 4 teams each day and the top 2 teams overall. Teams can only win 1 prize over the two days so the full results/prize list will appear after tomorrows round.
Thanks to everyone for your terrific support, yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at super Stockport
Another dry, superb Spring day greeted the Maxitours competitors at lovely Stockport Golf Club. The greens were rolling at around ten on the stimp meter and they were really excellent for the time of year -thanks to all the greens staff.

The Catering was once again up to the famously high standard expected at Stockport. Rob and Paul the two chunky bar men were also incredibly friendly throughout the day and they even helped me load the prize table back in my car before I left – legends.

Matt Nelstrup and Dave Wainwright had an enjoyable day and in the bar over a pint of bitter they kept looking into each other’s eyes saying ‘That is a great, great golf course!’ Which indeed it is.

The first time I played Stockport was in the regional qualifying for the Open Championship. Charl Schwartzel knew he had to play well to beat me and the Masters Champion was relieved and delighted to narrowly pip me by ten shots on his way to a course record 64.

Cultured French striker Anthony Martial has admitted recently that he cannot understand a word of what his Scouse United teammate Wayne Rooney says to him. There was also a language barrier to overcome for the well spoken Chris Dykens who played with the Liverpudlian brothers Garry and Steve Parle in today’s event. ‘I have no idea what they were talking about on the way round but I think they are both lovely fellas’ reported a confused Chris after his round.

Rob Platt from Barnsley always brings three fellow Yorkshire men with him. They filmed the famous British movie ‘Kes’ in the 1970’s at the comprehensive school team mate Carl Mollart went to. Carl said he was so poor he could only afford a pet pigeon rather than a kestrel. They weren’t hovering around the prizes today however after a disappointing 36 points.

As 5000-1 shots Leicester City close in on a surprise win in the premiership perhaps a bigger sporting shock was John Atkins run of seven holes on the front nine. He dropped just three shots to par. ‘The transformation was incredible’ said drinking pal David Kelly. ‘He was absolutely hopeless yesterday.’

Horse owner Mick Mahon returned to Maxitours duty after a successful week at Cheltenham. He certainly wasn’t at the races today as he and his partner struggled to just 17 points on the easy front nine.

Colin Seddon works as a monumental mason – he makes headstones for a living. After a solid start to his round he started digging his own grave after they could only pick up 1 point on the easy 5th and 6th holes.

Neil Stableford(7) from Mellor is actually related to the Wallasey member who invented the Stableford scoring system early last century. Today he did his ancestors proud with 27 points on the front nine playing alongside Ian Appleton(15) ! A more respectable 17 points on the tougher back nine ensured a season best top five Maxitours finish for the likeable duo.

Two of my star pupils Dave Antrobus(9) from Vale Royal and Tom Jarvis(15) were delighted to score 44 points and finish well in the prizes after a couple of very barren years. Their good pal Phil Smeathers marked their card and was full of praise when I asked him how they played ‘They were both alright’ he muttered.

‘Dale from Sale’ Wallace(11) teamed up with aircraft engineer John Jones(12) and they were overjoyed with their best finish of the year as they took 3rd place also on 44 points. They had some mechanical swing failures over the closing four holes as they picked up just seven points which prevented them from ‘runway’ with the prizes.

Taking first and second positions respectively were the high quality Didsbury teams of Phil Vokes(2) and Paul Sherlock(5) with 46 points , and Barney Ross(4) and Steve Latchford(7) with 45 points. These talented lads love their golf and play most days. They were out early when the greens were immaculate. ‘Those greens were incredible’ said Phil ‘we knocked in more than our fair share’. The well loved Maxitours regulars were delighted to earn their second win of the winter season. Very well played chaps.

Maxitours at Sun-Cracked Caldy.

Another glorious Spring day greeted the full field of Maxitours competitors who made the worthwhile journey to Caldy. Head green keeper Carl Crocher was out early cutting fresh holes on his excellent greens and the superb fairways ensured a great day was had by all.

‘That course was inspirational’ reported Geoff Andrews after his unusually good round.

‘It was in immaculate condition’ added scruffy John Dickinson.

Thanks to Golf Coordinator Matt Bergh who has a very bright future in golf management and all at Caldy for making us feel so welcome.
The catering was also exceptional. ‘Did you play well?’ I asked Paul Woodbine in the car park as he got in his car late in the day ‘the Curry spot on!’ he replied changing the subject quickly.

Congratulations to well loved Maxitours regular Brian Ankers. After a fifty year long membership at Lymm Golf Club Brian was last week given the honour of becoming the new President. ‘He’s a top bloke but he’s even more full of it than usual at the moment’ said good pal Peter Heald. Have a great year Brian.

Mechanic Harry Cross is addicted to his golf and plays whenever he is not under the bonnet of one of his customers cars . ‘As well as playing too much golf I also got really addicted to drinking brake fluid at work a couple of years ago. It was never going to be a big problem because I knew I could stop at any time.’ Added the light hearted Warrington man.

Steve Hall’s team was one short due to illness and as it was such a lovely day I treated myself and joined them for six holes as they passed near the Clubhouse. Pretending to be the ultimate professional I tried to show some concern about his golf as we walked down the first fairway and I asked him how his game was. ‘I want to be more consistent’ complained the Prestbury man. He then scored two treble bogies, picked his ball upon the 3rd, recorded two pars and then made a flawless birdie on the stroke index 1 hole. Yes Steve, you need to work on your consistency.

Brian Hopkins(5) has just returned from Florida and the usually pasty faced Shrigley Hall member looked healthier than normal after enjoying plenty of sunshine, steaks and cheesecake. He led his team of Mark Taylor (12)Alan Smith(12) and Paul Abbott(15) into a season best 3rd place. ‘ It was better than playing in the States out there’ said the talented single figure man’ I think I even saw an alligator when Al sliced his driver into the sea on the long 5th hole.’

Top golfing gentleman Colin Roberts(18) has not had a Maxitours victory for a few years however this season he is definitely closing in on a win. He was very narrowly pipped on a count back a few weeks ago and once again he finished second after an extraordinary card play-off. Playing with John Rigby(14), Dave Marchant (15)and Geoff Andrews(23) they scored 49 points on the front nine followed by a more human 38points on the back nine. Jim Rymer’s team also had a tremendous front nine with 48 points and they were shocked to win the back nine card play off with 39 points.

Retired Jim (22) is a famous Liverpudlian solicitor who sold his company (RymanSilverbeck) last year for even more money than his beloved Everton paid Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku. He teamed up with Bob Mottershead(14) John Dickenson(22) and window cleaner Paul Lord(5) to take first prize. Paul played great but had to disappear after his round as Thursday is collecting day. ‘Any problems give me a ring.’ suggested Jim still in the habit of touting for business. It was a great team effort as all players contributed equally. These are 4 really top lads and they were delighted to secure their first ever win. Well played chaps!

Thanks to everyone for your support, I am sure you all had a great day out there!
Yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at incredibly dry Dunham Forest

Yesterday’s torrential downpour left many local courses closed. Free draining Dunham Forest was well and truly open for business and the green keepers were up early hand cutting the excellent greens and preparing the bunkers. Many thanks for all their efforts. Top Head green keeper Chris leaves later this month to run a family business and he has done a remarkable job over the past eight years. Thanks to him Dunham is now rated as most definitely one of the premier courses in the North West.

Thanks also to Mike and Leslie Saxon who run a tight ship and produce some quality food. Pro Paul Dennis is also a pleasure to deal with.

Last week at Ringway John Royle was in the greenside bunker on the 16th.After a less than graceful swing he double hit the ball which then hit the top lip of the bunker and rebounded to hit him on his head. The four shot penalty took some adding up for the extremely likeable accountant. Today John and partner (the also very likeable) Dave Parsons were once again left counting the cost of a bad finish as they picked up just 4 points on the three tough closing holes to miss out on the prizes.

In today’s event the scoring was once again incredibly close.
Local estate agent John Hilditch (11) says he is sitting down with his wife tonight and having a selection meeting after he found a great new best friend in Clive Evans(9). The talented single figure handicapper stood in for regular partner Iain Bartholomew and was he just three over par today. ‘It’s nice to be back in the prizes’ added the wealthy Hale man after he finished in a season best 7th place.

Most of us have sat on one of Keith Tunstalls toilets in our lives. The ‘twyfords sanitory caster’ from Stoke on Trent has made plenty of toilet basins over the years. Today it was his hopes and dreams that were’ flushed’ away as his 43 points saw him closely ‘brush’ the major prizes. Jovial publican Terry Rathbone was his partner who had the smile ‘wiped’ off his face after poor finish followed their great start.

Andy Sandham(6) and Jack Meredith(9) live in the shadow of their more successful pals Jim Cox and Dave Blood. As the Spring heat wave hit South Manchester the Denton men had their very own day in the sun. ‘We were just relieved not to lose a fiver to those two’ said Sandham. Their 44 points was good enough for 3rd place.

Stuart Pearson(5) and Frank Stapleton(12) both played really well and were disappointed to narrowly miss out on first place as they also scored 44 points and lost out on a card play-off. ‘That would have been my biggest sporting achievement since I won the FA Cup with United’ said an upset Stapleton.

Taking the honours today for the first time were two top seniors from Lymm. Retired Architect Graham Littler(19) and Brian ‘had more jobs than hot dinners’ Hitchen(13) were both surprised and delighted to take top spot. Graham held his nerve with two excellent pars on the tough closing holes to overtake their closest competitors in some style. Well played chaps, I am really delighted for you.

Thanks for your 100% attendance. It is really appreciated. Yours in golf, Tim
